  • The trim tabs are a system that allows the boat to be trimmed longitudinally and transversely. In addition, it will enable you to reduce planing time and sail more efficiently, reducing fuel consumption. In this video, you will learn how to use the trim tabs on your boat and what advantages you can obtain by using them while sailing.
01:00 How do trim tabs work?
01:45 Shorter time to get up on plane.
    02:46 Influence on longitudinal stability.
03:28 Influence on transverse stability, correct heeling.
04:07 Use of trim tabs during navigation.
04:11 Use of the trim tabs when reversing.
04:23 Trim tabs sailing in choppy head seas.
    05:09 Trim tabs following Sea.

She did well, came in with the bow a little high but adjusted her trim tabs and came in fairly smooth when she finally got feel for it. Perfect speed coming in.

I have a 1999 Sea Ray 180 BR with a 3.0 liter MerCruiser. I installed Bennet self leveling trim tabs in an attempt to decrease the low speed wander when approaching my boat lift at low speed. What I found after installation was that I lost 3 mph in top speed and really no increase in hole shot. Low speed wander was better but it was still present. I think the spring force in these tabs is too stiff and they don't retract as far as they should when the boat is on plane. I pinned the tabs up so they are parallel to the hull at all times. It seems to reduce low speed wander slightly and no longer reduces my top speed.

Hi there ! Thanks for your technical guidance and savoir-affaire in boating issues. I have an Angler 22 with 2 x 250 HP VX series YAMAHA outbards. Quick question : Why is it so, that when I run the boat at mid power and press the trim button down, it clearly accelarates better...? I assume an electrical issue has to do, and if where shall I look to, in order to guarantee unstable electrical power to the spark plugs I pressume...?¡¡?

The funny thing is the trim tab. In my sterndrive, if I activate the starboard tab, for example, it lifts the port side. The added drag from the tab slows that side and tries to turn the boat in that direction, applying upward port yaw, the opposite that is expected. Cheers

The information is clearly and understandably presented. Since the video is so helpful, I can let you get a free pass using a robot voice. Lol

Very educational video, learned a lot. Good, clean graphics. However, the pronunciation of some words is not correct...especially for an obvious nautical term for the front of the boat.

Of course, the narration is done with a robot, so understandable.
