So he’s been lying in bed for 20 years when there’s work to be done to support a family of six living off of cabbage water. But as soon as there’s free chocolate mentioned, he can suddenly dance all over the place like nobody’s business. Wow, Grandpa Joe. Just wow.
grandpa joe is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most iconic villains in cinematic history because he pretended to be a bedridden invalid until there was free chocolate to be had and then and only then did he find the strength to get up and dance like the evil shitbag sorcerer he actually was.
everyone gives Grandpa joe a hard time but he raised a family working in a factory AND when he was fired he probably became hopelessly depressed to the point he couldn't get out of bed charlie bering home that golden ticket was the burst of euphoria he needed to recover mentally many people can't just snap back this whole movie is about poverty and mental illness
That's a very generous and kind take. But poverty is neither kind nor generous. I've been through both mental illness and long-term low income struggles. Sadly, you simply can't afford to wait for a time to snap out of it. Even if you're a zombie, mechanically going through life with dead heart, you have to keep grinding for your family. Especially if there are young ones. Yes it will take its toll on you, but that's what sacrifice and love for your family is. But of course, poverty and mental illness creates various familial situations and everyone handles it different ways. It's often complicated and we just try our best.
@@syaisilly1761 listin i hear and understand where you are coming from BUT i feel grandpa joe falls under "broken man" level of depression it was his dream job also he loved his boss and work was clean he also made good money then like could only basically slave wages in industrial english factories also again in the end the mothers is not the only one working charily does have a working father hes just not in the movie and to be fair again joe likely gos back to work now
@@syaisilly1761 I see your point. But tolerating it and grinding it outsold potentially make it worse. Especially in this economy, with taxes and prices ever rising. Besides people with mental illnesses struggle with employment as nobody will hire them because of there conditions. Mental ill or even depressed people are often looked down on and misunderstood and thus there options and opportunities are often very limited. Doesn't the government provide financial assistance? I know its lot a lot, but at least it could help. The bottom line is; you have to care for YOUR health and well being before you can do the same for your loved ones.
I think this takes place in Europe. Which means free healthcare, all paid for by the taxpayers. So If grandpa Joe had depression he could get therapy or medicine for his condition. But if this were set in America this wouldn't be an option. On top of that healthcare is very expensive and not very affordable to a lot of people, especially the poor. And it keeps going up. Its DISGUSTING. Im speaking on behalf of anyone here with depression or in any desperate need for treatment. Anyway so Joe's situation would've been more understandable. But the fact that he danced and sung like he fine the whole time doesn't make any sense.

He also got coke nails, you can see them in different shots. He also sang "I" got a golden ticket. It's not your fucking ticket you rat bastard.
When he said " I got a golden ticket " life wasn't good for 20 years until a possible handout.
That bed prolly stunk
