The macaque population has outgrown their habitat; thus, the sterilization program has been implemented. The registered feeders are used to help keep the macaques out of the city and neighborhoods. Macaques forage all the time except when they come down to the road in hopes of supplementing their food. So, when you say the macaques need to learn to forage...they already do and forage every single day. Macaques usually spend 20-40% of their day foraging. If the feeders stopped coming, there would not be enough native food to sustain the population. The macaques would go in search for food instead of starving. This would probably bring them into the city and neighborhoods.

It would be absolutely horrific to be there and watch. Retrieving a baby from a troop is literally impossible. Rhesus macaques are not endangered but they are protected in Hong Kong. So, a person can't just go, tranquilize Ari and take Gaia. One it is illegal, and two it would be dangerous. The whole troop will defend Ari and Gaia. Thus, giving Ari extra food and hoping Gaia escapes and is collected by a more beneficial female is all anyone can do to my knowledge. It's a darn shame. It's not the way they do it. It does happen but... rarely. Most of the time another mom takes up an orphan baby is just to carry it and it will starve. Most mom's won't nurse a baby not theirs. The baby will more frequently, due to hunger, try to nurse. But even babies are not likely to nurse from 'not mom'. Then there is the macaque 'law' that adults eat first then babies (who eat solid food) last. She won't feed the baby until she has her full. Occasionally a mom will feed her baby while she is eating. That is so sad . Loosing a mom and a baby. 💔 Audrey had already lost weight. Their natural instinct is to protect and love the baby. It just so weird that when it’s not their baby they don’t care to share food. She just feeds her face and don’t let the baby get anything.
It's been documented that if a mother dies that the older siblings take care of the youngest, but I've only seen that with babies who have already been weaned. Gaia still needs milk, so she might not make it unless a sibling or another troop female has the milk and the energy to take care of her.
Actually, mothers don't share food with their own offspring either (even stealing food they might have gotten hold of in their mouths or cheek pouches), so no need to hate on her!
No not weird at all because most monkeys moms included do not share their food with anyone including their own baby. I have seen videos where a two month old monkeys right cheek and lip was torn off by the mother taking the food out of the baby's mouth to eat it for themselves!
@@kendee_ Maybe bc I am not native English speaking, but what I mean is they don't share actively, with intent, like: here - take this half banana and I take the other half, like a human would do, and if they are starving they will do as I and others have described, i.e., steal from their own babies.
there wasnt anything anyone could have done to save the baby? you could tell that aria was not sharig her food so gia could eat. this made me cry. i wouldnt have taken the baby in but i would have tried to get it to a mother that had milk or made sure the baby got food by itself or something.😭
these are not pets and this is not a join-in group. and if another mother in the troupe would have been willing to take her, she would have. but 🤷🏼♀️ and you wouldn't have changed anything about it. above all, YOU wouldn't have even gotten close to Gaia but you would have taken a lot of beatings from the monkeys 😂 and you wouldn't had taught to forage and feed itself yet. it is not of the age that it is entitled to enough food to survive. and if you had taught it to eat its own food, they would have killed it pretty quickly 😂 that's why Aria doesn't share the food either. a food hierarchy applies even if the mother has died. it's just nature, only the fittest survive

i wonder if ari can be tranquilized and gaia taken away from her. no guarantee that another foster mom would keep her alive but ari cannot without any milk.
Is Ari unable to understand that Gaia will starve if she won’t share goodies and cannot nurse her? Kind of a stupid idea from Audrey. If she waited and passed, others would have sorted out a foster mom who could feed the baby. Ari seems ignorant to her default position of protection but no sustenance. I fear we will see video of Ari carrying around a baby that starved to died of dehydration. Both are very uncomfortable ways to expire.
@@jcgraham8808We don't know how she ended up with Ari, maybe Ari kidnapped her as Audrey was not able to defend her baby (or get her back). In my opinion Audrey was probably in chock with sepsis and high fever! Remember, wild animals will not show signs of weakness in the longest, until they are dying, practically! 😢
these are wild animals and do not have the gift of reason as humans do. do not blame them as they have done nothing wrong. this is nature in its pure plan, beautiful at times and cruel at others.
Well it's obvious that the baby will starve to death unless you people intervene. So the question is how long are you gonna let the baby starve before you do something about the situation?????
You know so much about the situation...you go intervene. You seem to be telling us you are the primate expert here. You make a plan and you carry it out.
Rhesus are repulsive compared to the long tail. This female couldn’t even keep that baby alive for two days. They are so greedy. I’ve seen dozens of orphaned long tail babies find a surrogate right away and survive. I even seen a teenage male long tail rescue an orphaned baby from another troop first thing he did he took it to the alpha male made sure it was ok and it adapted right away he always shared his food and in a couple weeks was already twice as independent. This female couldn’t even keep this baby alive for two days.
I love that. Maybe Tinker instead of Tinkerbell. But, I must admit that I am bias as my father called me Tinkerbell (Tinker for short) from the time I was born.
Pretty sure that Thea was 'thinking' about milk - and wondering if she should take a chance & ask Mum for some. And of course Mum knew it! The new baby - Tabitha?
@@Bird1964 I'm 99% sure she was attacked. This is the typical injury pattern. They always attack from behind and attack the back and butt. The teeth of these monkeys can do quite a bit of damage 😅
@@Bird1964 You're welcome 😊 This is particularly underestimated by followers and tourists. The Vervet monkey set up would be ideal but remember all the training involved in this. Unfortunately, this is impracticable, but my mind goes there too. Think of how milk bottles in cages would help many of the starving babies, let alone Gaia. I hate to see baby macaques die. They all are so darn cute.
@@bryan3409 Nature can be ugly. I agree, there should be no interference by humans. This I believe is not a NOVEL idea on Monkey Hill despite viewers comments. I don’t think so. As with mammals like sheep, goats and horses, etc, the nail material doesn’t harden until after the birth. I can’t even imagine sharp nails clawing their way out!!! Ouch!!!
Strangely macaques rarely have any type of birthing complications per the research articles I have read. Their coagulation system is so amazing they do not hemorrhage after birth, or with a retained placenta. Hemorrhaging also doesn't occur if their hand or foot is lost due to a trap. Remember Stumpy, Mr. Takashi or Toni. They all lost hands or feet or both from traps. Each of these macaques healed without any intervention. Totally unbelievable. Humans would bleed out in minutes if a limb is lost. Moreover, hemorrhaging after birth is a big concern. I also agree. The babies' nails harden after birth.
@@sonyabilledo4303 Even though it's correct that macaques/other primates seems to deal with retained placenta w/o severe complications to their lives, once in a while, I guess there's some that are affected. I remember MC actually mentioning earlier this baby season, about one mum having a retained placenta and about it not being a major concern. Unfortunately, I don't remember which one it was, or which episode. Possibly Audrey, as she did look as if she had some discharge from her 'vag' area! When a limb is lost due to snaring, it takes several days/weeks before it "falls" off, the blood vessels have closed long before, due to cirkulation loss. I also think that Mr Takashi/Dane might have had some intervention from humans/veterinary care, however I might remember wrongly on that one!

I think Harry must be teething from the way Leah kept jumping like she was being nipped. 😮
I've been wondering if you'll be posting a video with an update on Gaia?
She passed…
@@nancysanders1392 yes, I saw the video shortly after M.C. posted it, but thank you for taking the time to answer. So very heartbreaking when that happens.
Does Belle like to groom u?? I bet she likes your long hair....great vid...keep up the great work
How about, twinkle or trixy , tippey , Tonya , Tanya , tova, teya. Or tea.
I pray someone helps little Giai to die of starvation is a horrible way to die, especially when it can be corrected even if the baby needs to be removed from the troop for a bit , she may be able to eat solids, but her helper and step mom is not allowing for her to eat, is it worth watching another baby die , she already looks weaker.
I hope we find out something soon.
@@a2Flisa this is true, mothers do share food to an extent but they prioritize not doing so to encourage independence in the baby
@@kendee_ Maybe bc I am not native English speaking, but what I mean is they don't share actively, with intent, like: here - take this half banana and I take the other half, like a human would do, and if they are starving they will do as I and others have described, i.e., steal from their own babies.
How about Tia it also means princess that would be cute for the new little.

Hi sweetie. How are you feeling?
there wasnt anything anyone could have done to save the baby? you could tell that aria was not sharig her food so gia could eat. this made me cry. i wouldnt have taken the baby in but i would have tried to get it to a mother that had milk or made sure the baby got food by itself or something.😭
these are not pets and this is not a join-in group. and if another mother in the troupe would have been willing to take her, she would have. but 🤷🏼♀️ and you wouldn't have changed anything about it. above all, YOU wouldn't have even gotten close to Gaia but you would have taken a lot of beatings from the monkeys 😂 and you wouldn't had taught to forage and feed itself yet. it is not of the age that it is entitled to enough food to survive. and if you had taught it to eat its own food, they would have killed it pretty quickly 😂 that's why Aria doesn't share the food either. a food hierarchy applies even if the mother has died. it's just nature, only the fittest survive
@@Katy-Cherryperfectly said Katie 😊
@@Bird1964 Some people have a very romantic idea of these animals. From the other comment I answered you, you can clearly see what damage the monkeys can do. @katy_cherry5762 it would be hilarious to see the foolish people try and rescue any monk. If they have a death wish 😆 I've seen videos on the destructive nature of these things and I always stick up for the people. They're delusional when it comes to these monks, just like you said, romantic 🤦♀️🙄😂😂

Unfortunately no. Audrey went missing on 12 June (the day after) and has never been found till this day..

@@monkeysinc.3818so what has happened to Gaia...you must know since you know about her mother
Yearlings always have the sad face.
Get prepared...Gaia won't survive. If she does, it will be a miracle. Is it possible that Audrey had cancer? There did not appear to be any type of external wounds so whatever the problem was internal. Appeared to be a lot of drainage. Just like Skullhead...RIP
I noticed a puncture wound on her backside. Maybe impaled by a branch, a walking stick or a bullet.

Tiara
i wonder if ari can be tranquilized and gaia taken away from her. no guarantee that another foster mom would keep her alive but ari cannot without any milk.
No, they can not because it is I-L-L-E-G-A-L
if another mother there had been willing to take her, she would have. but 🤷🏼♀️ and that's how it is in nature. only the fittest survive
Macaque mothers doesn't share actively and their feeding comes first, irrespective if their own offspring or foster!
@@a2Flisa thank you the response. So, by leaving her with Ari, she signed her death warrant?
@@jcgraham8808We don't know how she ended up with Ari, maybe Ari kidnapped her as Audrey was not able to defend her baby (or get her back). In my opinion Audrey was probably in chock with sepsis and high fever! Remember, wild animals will not show signs of weakness in the longest, until they are dying, practically! 😢
these are wild animals and do not have the gift of reason as humans do. do not blame them as they have done nothing wrong. this is nature in its pure plan, beautiful at times and cruel at others.
They do have the gift of reasoning or they wouldn't survive.
The writing needs to stay longer
I agree. I paused it to read it all. Can't see too well.
heartbreaking!!
Well it's obvious that the baby will starve to death unless you people intervene. So the question is how long are you gonna let the baby starve before you do something about the situation?????
It is against the law for citizens to feed the monkeys, only the designated ones can feed them.
You know so much about the situation...you go intervene. You seem to be telling us you are the primate expert here. You make a plan and you carry it out.
Audrey's hindquarters looked bloody and ragged.
Curious cropping in this video as well as some oddly zoomed in shots....why?
Rhesus are repulsive compared to the long tail. This female couldn’t even keep that baby alive for two days. They are so greedy. I’ve seen dozens of orphaned long tail babies find a surrogate right away and survive. I even seen a teenage male long tail rescue an orphaned baby from another troop first thing he did he took it to the alpha male made sure it was ok and it adapted right away he always shared his food and in a couple weeks was already twice as independent. This female couldn’t even keep this baby alive for two days.
She's not going to make it. By the next video she will be gone. Mom and baby.
How about Tawny for Zoe's little girl?

@@Katy-Cherrya fight? Maybe?
@@Bird1964 I'm 99% sure she was attacked. This is the typical injury pattern. They always attack from behind and attack the back and butt. The teeth of these monkeys can do quite a bit of damage 😅
@katy_cherry5762 that's what I thought too. Thanks for your reply 👍 🙂 they do have terrifying teeth 😬
@@Bird1964 You're welcome 😊 This is particularly underestimated by followers and tourists. Hoping a caring mum took Gaia and nurse her🙏🙏🙏 praying that she survive, else, she'll be another Charlotte😭😭😭
Just hope Gaia makes even if it means being trapped or a special feeding cage is set up where she can get the milk and nutrition she needs.
How about no interference from humans? Novel idea I know.
@@bryan3409 Nature can be ugly. I agree, there should be no interference by humans. This I believe is not a NOVEL idea on Monkey Hill despite viewers comments.
Unfortunately, there is a chance an animal abuser is the culprit to Audrey's death. Just the thought that someone might have abused a female macaque with a newborn baby is absolutely disgusting.
Nonetheless, the death of Audrey and probable Gaia is sad. Dying from starvation and especially dehydration is a slow and painful death.
@@sonyabilledo4303 Oh its beyond fuc*ed up. Youd think with the laws the way they are and the amount of feeders and tourists itd be nearly impossible to abuse one of these monkeys without being noticed. Especially these huge troops

Hey there name twin ❤
i got love for monkeys and have watched Arroz from the begging but if there so smart why are they not smart enough to understand baby have to eat or will die or do they not care ??
They live by instinct, not complex human thinking.
I wonder if a fetus scratches in the womb.
Human babies do so monkeys probably do to. If there is room.😊
Ouch, thanks for that thought
