Yeah the problem with the pacing is that episode 5 is the end of the first book, the ship and the reveal of the San-Ti to the world.
Episode 6-8 are the first few chapters of book two so they are basically all setup, no payoff.
As for the next season, the last info was that there will be 2 more seasons who start filming together later this year and release 2026/27 respectively.
So quiet a way off sadly.
If you are interested there is actually another adaption of this story by the Chinese.
They also made a tv series out of it a few years ago, its way way WAY closer to the books but also way slower paced.
Its 30 episodes and available on Amazon Prime and for free ( first 3 episodes) here on RUclips with English subs on the official Tencent channel if you want to give it a try. But its basically just the first book and goes way more into the science stuff and setup. The Netflix version condensed a lot and also left out a bunch of characters.

That's a serious possibility. I have heard of this and didn't know it was on amazon. I'm also tempted to just get the books now.

It feels very original to me....which is a nice change for new good sci fi.

The books are great but VERY hard scifi and very dry. Meaning, all those nice character interactions you have in this show between the friend group and such does not really exist in the book. I think this is a part the Netflix adaption improved. In the original story the characters are plot devices to tell the story, nothing more.
There are also way more point of view characters, they left out a lot in the Netflix version and condensed some into a single character.
Also, the tech stuff is REALLY extensive. Remember the episode where the San-Ti said " we made a proton into a super computer" ?
That is like a 2 min scene in the show. Its 30 PAGES in the book going into every single scientific detail how they did that and how the process worked and how they developed it and and and. Thats basically the case for all the science stuff in the book.
Without hyperbole the Netflix show cut out like 90% of the sciene talk/jargon the book has.
Its definitely not an casual read.

I also like how the Netflix adaptation made the cast more international, vs the books were 90% of the relevant characters are Chinese, which is understandable given that the primary audience of the books is located in China, and Liu Cixin did not expect his series to be such a great success worldwide.
