    I always assumed that the San-Ti did the blinking of the night sky by unfolding a Sophon, and having it blink between transparent and opaque. We can already do this with windows, that we can make transition between transparent and opaque by running an electric current through them. It would essentially be the same as what they did at the end with the mirror in the sky. I don't think even the sophons could make every person and camera on earth see the sky blink with out one of the sophons unfolding.

    Many ships that exist Today are specifically made so that they can fit the Panama canal. It is a huge consideration when making ships that are expected to operate in the area. Making a ship that is too big is a huge disadvantage, since you would have to do a massive detour every time you need to transfer from Atlantic to Pacific. As a result, hunge number of ships are sized to exactly and barely fit the canal, so you can have as big a ship as possible, that is still capable of passing the canal. So obviously with every ship you know ahead of time, even before it is constructed if it will fit the canal. There is no "attempt" or "guess" included in the process.

    The San-Ti let Auggie finish her work because they knew that the Defense force was going to use her work to destroy the Judgement Day and get the Hard Drive, and they wanted the Defense Force to get the Hard Drive, If they stopped Auggie by resuming the countdown, then the Defense Force would be unable to get the Hard Drive.
    There is something the Nanofibers can be used for that hasn't been discussed yet (but I have been told will be in the later books) that is the reason that the San-Ti put a stop to her research. So now that they have let her complete her research, that application is now open again. Will the San-Ti be done in by unintended consequences? Because they wanted the Defense force to get ahold of the Hard Drive, they allowed a technology to be developed that could, in the future, be used to help humans defeat them.

    I'm late to the party, but was the bugs thing done by the ETO hackers? Because the limitations of the sophons should prevent them from achieving that, from my understanding they would kinda suck at manipulation of computers, having to change bits one at a time, for every display on earth, their speed would prevent them doing this in real time.
    I guess they could have set it up advance, which would explain the recorder screens that arent internet connected, but this sounds like it would require a prepared hack for the most part, but things like the recorder screen wouldnt be affected - i hope the books covered this better.

    9:10 _Thank you!_ So happy it’s not just me thinking this. Yes, the show reeeally has a small group problem, and you’ve got more episodes to go (unfortunately).
    I’m gonna rant a bit below, so feel free to avert your eyes.
    They have a bad habit of lampshading the really ridiculous stuff and moving on.
    Isn’t this VR headset literally impossible? Yes. Moving on.
    Isn’t it weird that Jin’s BF is selected, and also just happens to be “the best” officer in the Royal Navy? Yes. Also, Wade picks him before they even have a plan they’d need him for.
    Isn’t it weird that Auggie’s whole “shutting down the lab” just meant she had to log back in to a single PC? And then move straight from tabletop demo to mass production in a week’ish? What will her company ever do without her? Yeah, we’re not even lampshading that, that’s just silly.
    Not to mention that whether or not the San-Ti have abandoned Evans and co, that’s not a reason for them to suddenly let Auggie continue her work. As they themselves say, the idea is to _prevent_ technological progress.
    But the Sophons really wanted to monologue, I guess, so better let Auggie go to Panama with her BFF’s BF. Crazy random happenstance, that.

    • @AUniqueName
      @AUniqueName 6 месяцев назад +4

      Alright, well most of these can be very directly addressed:
      -The headset gets explained. Yes it's impossible for humans, and it's found out that aliens worked with the ETO group to make this headset (alien technology, human design + monitoring).
      -I think it is a little strange he selected Raj, and just so happens to select Jin, as the best people in their respective fields. They glossed over this saying he has his own way and reasoning about things. I think there's a good chance this will be explained later though. I feel like Raj's storyline will continue, and we still don't even know who Wade is lol. I think this will all get revealed when it's meant to. I do agree this was kinda left up in the air, but I think is intentional.
      -Wade already had a plan, it just wasn't vocalized/revealed to us yet.
      -I don't think it's fair to assume they just started "mass production" of the nanofibers when they needed it. We only saw a small sample get tested. Who knows what variations of the product they already had prepared, and how much of it they had in store. As far as we know, Auggie & her team could have an innovative process for insanely simple and fast production.
      -& considering it's her invention and she's the Chief Technology Officer, I don't think it's far fetched that she's able to turn production on/off from a single source in the lab. If anything, I think even if it's not ALL-ENCOMPASSING of every action she has to take to truly shut it down or start it back up, doing so from the PC represents her motivation to keep it running or not, which is all the aliens care about.
      -I think stopping Auggie's nanofibers was mostly about protecting the ETO group, but either way, after Mike Evan's conversation, the San Ti just straight up didn't trust him, and may have even WANTED Auggie's nanofibers to kill them. I also have a feeling their overarching plan will not be affected by Auggie's nanofibers at this point. But if the nanofibers do end up being a turning point in our battle against San Ti, then yeah it would be stupid that they didn't make Auggie shut it back down after the ship slicing. I think it's just not relevant to them at this point.
      You make some good points but I think many of them are explained when looking past the face value of what's presented, and hold on to more potential reveals. Like- it took us 5 episodes to find out what was even going on from the 1st episode 🤷🏻‍♂️

    • @ferchrissakes
      @ferchrissakes 6 месяцев назад +2

      @@AUniqueName Some good points. Thanks for taking the time! And I do mean that, even though I'll still argue my case :)
      - What I meant about the headsets was that the characters say they're impossible - but then they don't act accordingly. I.e. lampshading the issue. You're of course right that the San-Ti helped make them, that's clear, but the characters don't yet know aliens exist. So they can only assume they're manmade, and rightfully conclude that that makes no sense. But acknowledging that issue doesn't in any way resolve it, and instead they just keep playing. Sure, the game's compelling, but at least, I dunno, google a bit? They're scientists, but they're completely incurious. Jack points out that you can't even charge the headsets; show a physicist something that teeters on challenging thermodynamics like that, and I'd expect them to, well, react. Funnier is when Raj finds Jin playing the game, and the conversation just turns to dinner with his family. Apparently, it's NBD that his girlfriend keeps wearing a literal impossibility on her head.
      - As for Auggie's nanofibers: If the sophons stopped her work to protect the ETO specifically, then they'd have to be have seen the future. If they can do that, the story's just got more problems. So I'd like to believe they were just trying to stop her work on general principle, since it's a tech advancement and it's explicitly their job to stop those. True, they later abandon the ETO and Evans, but even then, why would they let us have a new toy? Or let us have the comms archive? Or give us the villain monologue? Why not let us kill each other the old fashion way and keep us in the dark? One might also ask why they would give humans that headset technology. Those sophons just seem hellbent on advancing the plot for us. It'd be more compelling if one of our protagonists actually figured things out or forced the reveal, but it's all on the antagonists.
      "You are bugs and it's our stated purpose to sabotage your development, but please accept these gifts of knowledge and technology".
      But for the nano-thing specifically, maybe the sophons realized they'd already messed that up. Because Auggie shut down the lab _after_ she demonstrated her breakthrough - people clapped and everything. The countdown accomplished nothing, as far as I can tell. If she'd randomly dropped dead, I imagine the company could carry on fine. Especially if they're already set up for mass production too. She's chief science officer, yes, but the company seems large and professional enough to know how to mitigate the so-called "bus factor" in their tech dev. And here the tech's already been dev'ed.
      There's just so many contrivances, and it really irks me. I could go on and on with examples, but really my main gripe isn't those plot points but the "small group problem" the guys mentioned in the reaction. The story's cosmic in scale, but all our heroes just happen to all know each other and can fulfill any role the plot calls for? That's less plausible than aliens existing. Anything that'll happen in this story will happen to one of these jokers; no one else exists.
      Case in point: In episode 1, before any of them have done anything, Shi already has photos of all of them on his conspiracy board. It's a tired joke but: It's almost like he's read the script.

      @@kirkdarling4120 yeah, that’s a good one. Most stories have a small group you follow, but, like in Andromeda Strain, _circumstances_ bring them together; they don’t come preassembled. In Andromeda it makes sense that those people know _of_ each other given their fields and expertise, but if they’d all been college buddies too, that’d be weird. The whole point was that they’d been gathered together from far and wide to form a dream team of pathologists

    26:03 And if the sophon had just stayed like that for a few weeks, all the "bugs" would have been dead. Honestly, the number of plot holes the mere existence of the sophons leads to is legion.

      Yeah but when the sophon is unfolded like that it can be destroyed by a nuke in the book after it unfolded they had all the missile defence systems on earth or just NORAD I can't remember so that if it unfolded again it can be destroyed they were just caught off guard.

      The sophon is vulnerable to attack from conventional and nuclear attack when unfolded like that. In the book it won’t unfold on Earth for this reason.

      @@AmanCreatesArt if it unfolded far enough away from the planet, and especially if it did so before we even knew what a sophon was, then nukes would be worthless against it. Also, I don’t know why it would be vulnerable against a nuke, and yet be perfectly capable of shrinking down to the size of a proton and putting itself in the path of a particle accelerator beam with absolutely no ill effect.
