7 Amazing Chords For Bass Players (You cannot exist without these)

- Ever wonder if you can play chords on the bass? The answer is yes!
Some chords work better than others, but there are scores of different voicings for every chord type. In this video I’m going to use a simple 2-5-1 chord sequence to show you some of my favourite chord voicings. Remember, you can change the tension of any chord just by changing the voicing, even if you’re still playing the same notes.
In this lesson you’re going to learn:
- How to move different chord patterns around the neck.
- How to navigate a 2-5-1 in the key of E Major.
- How to alter the tension of a chord by changing the voicing.
- How to become a chord ninja on the bass!
- And much, much more...
As always, see you in the shed…
Scott :)

Yoooo fellow bass dudes... the LAST chord I demonstrate, the B7#5, I play it correctly but the onscreen text says G#... it should be a G natural.
Thanks for watching guys! See you in the 🎸🎸🎸🎸
Well, if it's a B chord it should be an F-double-sharp, but bass players are not big on theory.....
@@victotronics Not forgetting the 3rd of a B7 is D#, not Eb...
@@victotronics Every funk or jazz "theorist" or theory user will agree with me when I say Double-sharps are completely inconvenient for understanding the chord. I'm not saying double sharps are useless or incorrect but they're not useful in practice if you aren't a keys player.
Scott, always use flat strings on all your basses?
Thank you, that fetched me up for a bit.
3:23 when the chord is so soulful you turn into an owl
My name is Scott and I just bought my first bass. Figured while I'm lockdown I should finally pursue my interest in learning to play. Wish me luck!
you'll do it great!
Good luck!!
Good luck! Edit: How was this liked so quickly on a old video
How's it goin man? I started playing bass around the same time last year
Good luck man! Hope you stick with it and grow to really love the groove :)
Brilliant as always Scott. Words can't describe how much good you've done for Bass players across the entire globe. What you present has been an innovation to say the least. Please just keep doing what you're doing in the exact way you're doing it. Stay safe in these unusual times we're currently experiencing. Cheers for all that you do.
Damn got here right on the upload, getting bassed up before anyone else
Angus Burgmann good to hear, Angus 🔥
Compellingly beautiful. Have just spent a couple of hours as a consequence working out a chordal version of 'Ain't no sunshine' in remembrance of our brother Mr Withers RIP. Gorgeous stuff, Scott. Thanks v much. Stay well - and to our fellow low end lovers out there too.
The hardest thing for me to wrap my head around on playing chords on bass is where to put the 3rd....and you made it obvious that it should be played (at least) an octave up from the root! Bang-up job on getting that threw my thick skull!
Love it!
There is something about chords on bass that has a unique quality like no other harmonic instrument!
Wicked love this lesson Scott - some of these chords definitely stretched my fingers to the limit!
One of my fave lessons Scott, so nice to hear through a Pbass, just gorgeous, thank you.
3 days into my trial period, and WOW! My learning curve just shot straight up...
Currently starting from scratch to hopefully read the stave, the meat and potatoes and then this delicious slices of chordal cake is in my you tube alerts.
It seems I am rewarded with a treat.
I feel an idiot for not signing up sooner.
Thank you, can't wait for trial to be over so I be properly enrolled.
What an amazing lesson Scott!! Keep safe and thanks
This has been one of my favorite sessions! Especially since I am not a fast bass player. Thank you.
Byron Lovering cheers Byron! 🙌
Thanks Scott for sharing this. Hope you and your family are all safe and well
Life changing Scott!! I'm going to try to incorporate this into my 5/6 playing.
Digging your Videos Scott….much appreciated…Thankyou
I was dreading having to sort through a lot of plugs about your site in the video and your courses, I was pleasantly suprised. Straight to the point and as always you deliver a lot of quality, no doubt about it. Thank you for the video Scott :) I'm much more inclined to consider buying your material when I don't spend all my time watching commercial fillers in the videos.
Nice video scotts always watching to the end no skip
You never cease to amaze me. Please keep it up
YES SCOTT! I literally started loving bass chords and especially ur video's on them, and now u bring me this masterpiece? Thanks so much haha
Arno B cheers, Arno 🙌
You guys are awesome for doing this
man that's awesome, beautiful chords! thanks 4 that. it's perfect for me in Brazil to play some MPB songs
This kind of snip-bit video is a great idea. Short and sweeeeet! It's always cool to add a chord in the mix when you play a melody line vs. root - 5th. I pray everyone is safe during this pandemic - you can't catch the virus from the bass - especially if you alcohol rub down the strings first. lol
Great work, Scott, as always. Stay safe.
Looks like the first three chords of Autumn Leaves, love it!w
I love chords on Bass, Great 👌🔝👊🏻
Thank you, inspirational!, I will try it. Hello from California USA !!!!
Dude, you are just the best. For real! Can't wait to grab a bass and get in on this. :)
Keith Kenyon do it, Keith! 💪
Great video!! Gotta go try those chords now!
Got a bass for my 13th birthday, so I’ve been playing a couple years now and this helped out with some of my improv skills
SDR101 lol i got my bass for my 14th bday
I love the looks of this Bass. It looks like an old Bass with a big wound. The darker head compliments that nicely.
I was literally just playing around with that Emaj9, on the fretless. So nice.
You are really good man!!
You should make a series where you try the most complicated songs/chords that you find!
Hello Scott! I bought an electro-harmonix freeze pedal on your recommendation. This lesson is PERFECT for it!!!
insane, Scott! Thanks for posting...
Thank you very much Scott. Sounds so spicy !
Hi Scott, the major add9 and the minor add9 positions are the first 2 "every breath you take" and "through the barricades" arpeggi .
Another voicing which is from an old Jeff Berlin article for the major chord is from Lowest to highest Major 7th, Major 3rd, Root, Fifth ie in E it would be D#, G#, E, B. A bit of a stretch
Beautiful bass for chords
I just love seeing Scott enjoy the sound he's producing! Notice the semi-frequent cuts back to teaching in the middle of him getting lost in the various voicings? I can totally identify with that. So many times I end up audio-erogenous doodling instead of scaling in practice, just enjoying the sound of it. So, Scott, how much did you have to cut out of this episode? :)
E major 9 = every breath you take👍 great video Scott!
simon freese we’ll spotted, Simon! 💪
This lesson is just like a lullaby )))))))
Eargasm on bass chords. Love it ❤
Epic sound 👌
so. good. Thank You!!
The 9th chord at 3:14 which you need bigger hands for upset me because I have small hands and wasn't able to play it. However, I found that I could use the bar method with my bar finger at an angle to get the major third. Yay! This also makes it quite easy to modulate between major and minor (double yay).
Always awesome Scott 🤙
Fantastic! Love that P-bass!
Hey Scott, Have you heard about the amazing Ebinho Cardoso? He's a Brazilian bass player who has written a book about bass chords. Check it out!
That moollon fender copy! 💥 Greetings from Brazil!!!

Man I love your style, dope video mate!
Comak Strickland cheers dude! 🙌
I love it 🙂
Beautiful mate
Scott, the Emaj9 chord form you love features prominently in a performance by Jonas Hellborg and the late, lamented genius Shawn Lane. It's from the "Paris" DVD recorded at New Morning. (You're welcome.)
Super nice 👍🏻 thx
Hey Scott, hope you are doing well kind sir. Man, I LOVE these chords! I'm a guitar player and I'm seriously thinking about purchasing a bass to experiment and have a little fun right? And really see where my musical journey takes me. Cheers.
Picked up the bass because of you!
I love how the intervals are so accurate and evenly spaced. Do you have a guitar tech or did you do that yoursel

That my friend, is one thicc tone. Love that
@mixed up everything without a doubt you and your bothers are the best , thanks for sharing the conversation, I would like to hear playing some of Limp Bizkit's songs from you and your brothers , eg My Generation, Break Stuf, Nookie, Faith, have fun whith the bass chords, cheers
My experience is, using a little of compression and some slight amout of drive helps to translate chords on bass ;-)
Nice video !!! Are you still using your markbass amp ?
Cool thanks bud
Bruh I love that strings sound
I came away from this video with 2 immediate reactions. First, it seems (in a positive way) to have been partly motivated by the work of Chris Squire, who I’m sure utilized all those voices in his playing. The other reaction is a question I’ve got. Scott, have you ever owned and played a Fender or Squier Bass Six? If you owned one of those, it would make for an awesomely unique experience and video review.
I should know. I’ve got the Squier edition, and though it might leave a thing or two to be desired in the output department, I still love how it sounds.
My Hi-fi is on my computer... Sounds good man !
Scott can you do a tutorial for the six notes of Forget me nots.
Hi from Ireland bro. your a stag ox on the bass.
You look like and remind me of my X-Wife's new Husband. He is a really cool and great guy, I like him a lot. True Story. I’m 60 and have been playing bass for about 2 weeks and I'm-loving-it! Lot's of thanks going out to you. Triple
This is so interesting sir
Glad to see the Moollon of Doom back again!
Any eta on the next Signature video? Your last one was amazing and has made me search for a Urge. Found a mexican one for cheap and while missing the P pickup in the middle, I’d still like to try it.
Just earlier today I was noodling around with double stops. Unison E ->A->A7->E7. I wish I had a looper pedal.
those are kinda cheap online, you can find some really cheap and they do their job right
Woah, what bass do you play? It looks so cool
Hi Scott, could write what sounds effects u used here ? Thanks.
OR Scott's favorite COVID chords. I'll ring em out nicely in Dallas, TEXAS. I COULD live w/o these chords, but why should any of us have to? Chord up, folks!
the chords sound so Victor Wooten, LOVE IT
Excellent lesson, would love to see more on chords. Sounds like sweet lullaby groves
"sounds cool, right?" the fkn heavens opening and babies being born in a dam bass chord lol
Have you replaced the handle for this precision? I see the shovel cut
Yooooo thx.
Chords course ... Try to say that fast 5 times
Loved the video btw! Keep it up;)
