In that same vein, people in the US pay higher prices for import products primarily produced overseas as well - if the product(s) are not produced or designed primarily in one’s home country, higher prices may have to be expected for the transport and distribution alone. But if an international collector has already been paying US equivalent of $40 for standard RH dolls, and then had to pay $53 or more for Kia, I think similar concerns would be raised.
I feel like being "special edition" is the only reason for her being so expensive since she hardly seems like an upgrade from the others. Still, she's probably my favorite RH doll so far so it's worth it for me to pay extra.

The $13~ price increase for her is strange but offends me less, mainly because like that jean jacket and it's extensive detailing. Is $40 too much? Maybe. And should she have a more special box to indicate her being more expensive? Again that a maybe - perhaps the entire doll could come in a heart shaped box (no relation to nirvana lol) and with a flap/cover that has heart cutouts ala a box of chocolates but I can also get them wanting to keep her unified a bit more to the core releases. If nothing else, this ties a bit back to the conversation about what 'collector quality' means and how that should be presented & priced. RH presents itself as a luxe experience so them bumping up a special edition doll makes sense on paper but perhaps a little dress to make this a 3 outfit giftset (nothing too fancy, maybe a pink slip dress??) would make that $40 price easier to swallow (especially since Avery is $10 more for way more things) but overall I'm glad she got out to so many places quickly and have no regrets on picking her up.

Rainbow High definitely feels like a luxury playline overall, a la Ever After High in its earliest days, and admittedly now that I've seen them in person, even the Cheer dolls feel more luxe than your average 'budget' doll. But I still think they could have gotten away with a $19.99 price point, maybe even if that meant they had to further shrink down or simplify the packaging...? I'm also curious if RH is just pricier to produce in general, with so many outfit details and the fact that the dolls are just physically larger ergo require more hair and plastic/vinyl than your average Barbie or even OMG. Because of that it's hard to imagine a $15 or cheaper RH doll even existing, outside of sales/clearance of course. The responses to Kia's price point have varied and been pretty fascinating to me. I see a lot of people being shocked and uncomfortable over it, but I see a similar amount more than willing to cough up the extra $13 for her no questions or concerns raised. I'm also more thinking about the parents who may have already not been thrilled paying close to $30 for MGA products having to pay even more for one doll for their child. Toys and child entertainment adds up price-wise in general, but RH at this point is a costly commitment for child fans and the parents who have to eat the bill. As we've seen, however, for the most part you get what you pay for given how detailed and lovely they all are. I think all this ties into your mention of collector quality vs what is expected / accepted for the child audience. But I think that's also the space RH is intended to occupy, as you said a more luxe experience for collectors and kids alike. I totally agree even a slight additional flourish like a more lavish box shape/style for collectors, or one simple third outfit, would have immediately fully justified the price. She's lovely either way, I am just curious if she'll get a price cut down the line.

Hard to say for sure, but yes hopefully “special edition” doesn’t mean limited edition! LOL Surprise eventually rereleased Crystal Star so...Rainbow High might be similar!

I'm of the opinion that the price is perfect. She has a lot of added details and embellishments that the other dolls don't. Those little things cost money. I have no regrets buying her at the 40 dollar price point 😊😍.

I pay regular price $39.99 CDN up here in Canada for all the regular dolls. Since we don't have Targets up here anymore, I'm sure she will cost much, much more to get. Online shopping is prob the only place we'll ever find her up here. I want her! She's so pretty with her brown skin & eyes! 😍
$40 CAD is about the equivalent of $31 USD, so it's not quite the same but yes still a bit of inflation. I think many products are sold at inflated prices internationally, and that's surely due to international import/processing fees. Higher Canadian prices are often listed on products we see here in the US too, but that's also in relation to differing exchange rates. I’m super late but wanted to add that you are spot on about the Kia and Mariah. Mariah also has a song called Sweetheart, which is embroidered on Kia’s jacket. Also, Mariah’s favorite color is pink. Mariah wore that exact hairstyle with the 2 braids at the top in 2017 for the Kids Choice Awards. Her hair was also multiple colors (brown and blonde) at the time.
$39 buck does seem pretty expensive, but given the fact that MGA has given us such great quality, and the first dolls were only $26, I think we have been blessed. I would spend $39 just knowing that I am getting great quality from MGA, and they have not disappointed me at all. But as a human, I love anything cheap in price.

As you I were surprised at the price for this doll, but my mind gravitates between thinking that because she is Target exclusive she could be a Limited Edition doll; or thinking that probably they will start addressing "the proper" price for the dolls..Don't know, I guess eventually we will know.. Have to say that I do agree that the price increase is kind of shocking, when you compare her with the other dolls from the 1st line.. but.. I do think she worth it.. While I do see the inspiration on Mariah (when you were pointing out all the aspects of her design and the name) to me she looks like a CareBears/My Little Pony inspired character. About the cheerleading line of dolls, i am in love with them and I guess a "discussion" video chat will be awesome..
It's not the $40 price itself that bothers me so much as the drastic difference between that & the standard dolls' price. The detailing def makes her worth more than the standard dolls, but not $13 more! You could argue that mga's been undercharging for the whole line in general, but that wouldn't change that whatever price they set the standard dolls at, kia only comes w/ $3-5 more worth of detailing. Even if she is actually limited quantity rather than just a themed release, as she is, she still doesn't offer more than a few $ worth of extra stuff. Like others are saying, she should've come with a 3rd outfit & more elaborate box if they wanted that much more for her. In general I feel like there's inconsistency in the quality level for the standard dolls themselves. Wave 2 came w/ fewer accessories than wave 1 (no belts or earrings, & all the girls' shoes are basically the same, compared to the variation of heels, flats & boots in wave 1). There's no reason imo that say, Karma should be the same price as Ruby. Even a lot of the fabrics used in wave 2 seem cheaper to me, especially for stella's second outfit. Krystal & river are the only ones who come close to matching the original dolls imo.
I thought $40 was a bit much. But she has more accessories and finer clothing details than the wave 1 and 2 dolls (whose quality is already amazing). So, maybe shoulda charged $5 more imo? I mean, every doll line has a special edition doll. It’s no different here, they just released her as a valentines day themed doll and gave that price. She is also target exclusive
Y'all hit the nail on the head! loved all the content that was covered in this video. I was shook with the price point as well and totally agree with the argument of she does have some nice details. I would note that her braid detail in her hair, the hair clips, shoe flocking, detailed earrings could also be perks to the price point. BUT! yeah don't see that justifying the price. Hear me out though; if she had come with a purse or bag that probably would feel more in line for me. or if she came with accessories like her cellphone and a skateboard(she gives me skater vibes) or even if the went the route to include some little valentines day cards and stickers ya know? Either way she is gorgeous and definitely looking forward to adding her to my collection.
I don't usually like Rainbow High (l like a more realistic-looking doll), but this one is super cute and has some unique features. Too bad Target stopped shipping to Canada due to the pandemic. Hopefully she'll show up at one of the retailers I can buy from. I don't plan on collecting any more RH, so this would be my one RH doll. I'm not paying eBay prices, though.
It's funny because all dolls end up more expensive in Europe but this one came at the same price as the other ones, she's 32euros. I know the normal RH are 26$ in US, but here in EU are 32€. Anyway I am happy that I didn't need to pay 40-50euros for her.
I got the Kia Hart doll yesterday and I was shocked that she was 50 percent off. I didn't know until I went to the register and saw she was only 20 dollars. I am glad I waited for her. Meanwhile, I also got Robin Sterling yesterday for 50 dollars, so it balances out I suppose. lol :)

I heard kia is $40 because she was supposed to be part of a playset (something like avery) but because stores didn't want the playset, mga decided to sell her separately. I still can't justify the additional $13. Guess I'm gonna wait for a sale/giveaway contest to get her.
I heard that rumor too, not sure if it's true. It does feel like something 'happened' on either Target or MGA's end to cause this odd asking price without clear reasoning. Collector/special edition releases are usually inflated in one way or another, but it just feels like too much of a spike in Kia's case, comparatively. Hope you're able to get her eventually!
I don't think people who think $40 is not a lot understand how expensive rainbow high is. Series 2 have 6 doll @ $27 + taxes (That $30 for me in CA) = $162 ($180 with taxes for me) Now add $40 = $202 just to get all the doll in series 2. Now they also decided to add the cheer line at the same time so 6 doll @ $23 = $138 (not including taxes) so to get all the new doll release is = $340 That just insane amount of money for dolls so yeah $40 is a lot. I don't think she worth $40 maybe $35 like first Amaya doll would be a better price. (Amaya came with a whole hair playset to be fair)
Comparatively to the $26.99 we've been paying for the other girls, it's just an odd inflation. If they wanted to bump up her cost due to the specialty packaging and highly embroidered jacket, I would have been completely fine with a $29.99 or maybe even $34.99 price tag. But $13 more than the other girls, it just doesn't feel like she packs an additional $13 of value compared to Krystal, Violet, etc. We'll see if the price is eventually reduced!
@@ToyChat After seeing series 2, if they bump it to $35-$40 I will stop buying. Everyone keep saying wave 2 is awesome but IMO it suck. Every girl wear the same high heel shoe (in a different design), same jacket, and basic skirt. It not as creative nor detail as series one IMO. If they gonna bump up the price to $35 then I expect Kia level of detail. I won't pay $40 though cuz I don't think it worth $40 unless it come with 3 outfit. Not paying $35 for the basic top, jacket, skirt and high heel combo that half of series 2 got.
I think the extra $13.00 is for the fact that she is a special edition and exclusive to Target (so limited in numbers). I initially did not want to get her for that reason but, I really like her outfits and I’m not sure that Target will lower the price eventually so I may have to bite the bullet on this one.
I always ask myself if I’d pay the cost of the dolls clothes and accessories even without the doll. That helps me a lot in deciding to get any new dolls.
I agree Kia, while very beautiful and another great doll in the Rainbow High series; doesn't really seem to justify her $40 price point. I think its only that way because she's a "Special Edition" doll and often times they are a little more expensive then the basic line, but they could've justified it better. It'd be better if they instead included a special light up stand or something. Heck, even one other complete outfit would make sense. Despite it, I still hope to find her. She's very cute, and her style is totally in my radar. Also, personally I think it's funny how so many characters are being introduced through their dolls before we even meet them in the show.

Honestly as a former american girl collector, I am more than willing to pay $40 for her. Not to mention I would wear all of her outfits irl and she's so far my rainbow high mini me, I'll probably be buying her. That being said, I've seen photos of her with terrible rooting, and bad quality control which is frustrating especially at her price point.

Tbh I'm more than a little bit salty that she's $40 in America but $60 in Canada. I get that there's currency exchange to think about, but a $20 difference is a bit much. We aren’t saying $40 is too much in general, just that it doesn’t make sense comparatively to what Kia comes with as opposed to the other $26.99 dolls. And international currencies differ in value. $40 USD isn’t the equivalent of $40 CAD.

The issue is Kia costs a good deal more, comparatively, than previous dolls sold here, but it doesn’t feel like that additional value is there to justify it. She’s a lovely doll regardless!
This is just a silly argument. International stuff are always more expensive like toy chat stated. This is an American doll so American get it cheaper. When I buy Japanese stuff I pay more then Japanese people. Usually I pay double the original price. Should I go complaining that it not fair Japanese people get Japanese good cheaper then me? I mean they only have to ship across sea and pay the $20 + shipping fee but somehow it just not fair??? And if Japanese people say their stuff is too expensive then they shouldn't cuz I have to pay more then them already and that unfair. It just not a reasonable complaint/comparison. International stuff have stuff like international taxes, shipping etc that hike the price up.
Well I think it should cost 35 dollars because it is an intermediate price because because with ten dollars more than the original doll costs, you can buy the avery set that is worth a lotooo
No luck in finding her in my area of Texas. I have looked at many of my Target's, but she is nowhere to be found..even though Target said she is available at all the stores I went to! HUH? She is a beautiful doll, but I am skeptical of paying that 39.99 price. She really is no different than the other Rainbow High Dolls in my opinion. Limited addition will always mean a higher price point.
I have found her in the Houston area. you have to ask an employee to get her from the back as her aisle isn't due to reset until Jan 10th 😊 (I work at target)

Special Edition is NOT LIMITED Edition. There is a difference. Special Edition, they will make as many as they can sell. ;-)

I’m super late but wanted to add that you are spot on about the Kia and Mariah. Mariah also has a song called Sweetheart, which is embroidered on Kia’s jacket. Also, Mariah’s favorite color is pink. Mariah wore that exact hairstyle with the 2 braids at the top in 2017 for the Kids Choice Awards. Her hair was also multiple colors (brown and blonde) at the time.

$39 buck does seem pretty expensive, but given the fact that MGA has given us such great quality, and the first dolls were only $26, I think we have been blessed. I would spend $39 just knowing that I am getting great quality from MGA, and they have not disappointed me at all. But as a human, I love anything cheap in price.
I’m currently in the process of restyling my Kia’s hair too, I just use straws and then like a gel/water mix and sprayed it all over

Yup, the technique I used was pretty similar. Straws are the most common way to curl doll hair but curlers and curling rods can work too! -Max

As you I were surprised at the price for this doll, but my mind gravitates between thinking that because she is Target exclusive she could be a Limited Edition doll; or thinking that probably they will start addressing "the proper" price for the dolls..Don't know, I guess eventually we will know..
Have to say that I do agree that the price increase is kind of shocking, when you compare her with the other dolls from the 1st line.. but.. I do think she worth it..
While I do see the inspiration on Mariah (when you were pointing out all the aspects of her design and the name) to me she looks like a CareBears/My Little Pony inspired character.

It's not the $40 price itself that bothers me so much as the drastic difference between that & the standard dolls' price. The detailing def makes her worth more than the standard dolls, but not $13 more! You could argue that mga's been undercharging for the whole line in general, but that wouldn't change that whatever price they set the standard dolls at, kia only comes w/ $3-5 more worth of detailing. Even if she is actually limited quantity rather than just a themed release, as she is, she still doesn't offer more than a few $ worth of extra stuff. Like others are saying, she should've come with a 3rd outfit & more elaborate box if they wanted that much more for her.
In general I feel like there's inconsistency in the quality level for the standard dolls themselves. Wave 2 came w/ fewer accessories than wave 1 (no belts or earrings, & all the girls' shoes are basically the same, compared to the variation of heels, flats & boots in wave 1). There's no reason imo that say, Karma should be the same price as Ruby. Even a lot of the fabrics used in wave 2 seem cheaper to me, especially for stella's second outfit. Krystal & river are the only ones who come close to matching the original dolls imo.

I thought $40 was a bit much. But she has more accessories and finer clothing details than the wave 1 and 2 dolls (whose quality is already amazing). So, maybe shoulda charged $5 more imo? I got her anyway, and I'm in love 😍 I hope MGA doesn't hike up the price point, cuz $26.99 is affordable for such high quality, playability, and collectability 🤞 also, anyone else annoyed that the cheer dolls are only a couple bucks cheaper for waaaaaaay less stuff?

Y'all hit the nail on the head! loved all the content that was covered in this video. I was shook with the price point as well and totally agree with the argument of she does have some nice details. I would note that her braid detail in her hair, the hair clips, shoe flocking, detailed earrings could also be perks to the price point. BUT! yeah don't see that justifying the price. Hear me out though; if she had come with a purse or bag that probably would feel more in line for me. or if she came with accessories like her cellphone and a skateboard(she gives me skater vibes) or even if the went the route to include some little valentines day cards and stickers ya know? Either way she is gorgeous and definitely looking forward to adding her to my collection.
I don't usually like Rainbow High (l like a more realistic-looking doll), but this one is super cute and has some unique features. Too bad Target stopped shipping to Canada due to the pandemic. Hopefully she'll show up at one of the retailers I can buy from. I don't plan on collecting any more RH, so this would be my one RH doll. I'm not paying eBay prices, though.

It's funny because all dolls end up more expensive in Europe but this one came at the same price as the other ones, she's 32euros. I know the normal RH are 26$ in US, but here in EU are 32€. Anyway I am happy that I didn't need to pay 40-50euros for her.

I got the Kia Hart doll yesterday and I was shocked that she was 50 percent off. I didn't know until I went to the register and saw she was only 20 dollars. I am glad I waited for her. Meanwhile, I also got Robin Sterling yesterday for 50 dollars, so it balances out I suppose. lol :)

I've been hearing collectors getting Target to price match the doll to the other doll prices, and I am going to try and do the same. I can't justify the price inflation.
I've been hearing the same! Unfortunately we didn't even get that opportunity since the ones we got were pulled from the back, they weren't sitting on the shelf by the other $26.99 price tags.

I heard kia is $40 because she was supposed to be part of a playset (something like avery) but because stores didn't want the playset, mga decided to sell her separately. I still can't justify the additional $13. Guess I'm gonna wait for a sale/giveaway contest to get her.
I heard that rumor too, not sure if it's true. It does feel like something 'happened' on either Target or MGA's end to cause this odd asking price without clear reasoning. Collector/special edition releases are usually inflated in one way or another, but it just feels like too much of a spike in Kia's case, comparatively. Hope you're able to get her eventually!

I just got Kia & I have to say $40 is a lot especially when I also just found Avery for $50 so yeah it’s very expensive
I don't think people who think $40 is not a lot understand how expensive rainbow high is. Series 2 have 6 doll @ $27 + taxes (That $30 for me in CA) = $162 ($180 with taxes for me) Now add $40 = $202 just to get all the doll in series 2. Now they also decided to add the cheer line at the same time so 6 doll @ $23 = $138 (not including taxes) so to get all the new doll release is = $340 That just insane amount of money for dolls so yeah $40 is a lot. I don't think she worth $40 maybe $35 like first Amaya doll would be a better price. (Amaya came with a whole hair playset to be fair)
Comparatively to the $26.99 we've been paying for the other girls, it's just an odd inflation. If they wanted to bump up her cost due to the specialty packaging and highly embroidered jacket, I would have been completely fine with a $29.99 or maybe even $34.99 price tag. But $13 more than the other girls, it just doesn't feel like she packs an additional $13 of value compared to Krystal, Violet, etc. We'll see if the price is eventually reduced!

@@ToyChat After seeing series 2, if they bump it to $35-$40 I will stop buying. Everyone keep saying wave 2 is awesome but IMO it suck. Every girl wear the same high heel shoe (in a different design), same jacket, and basic skirt. It not as creative nor detail as series one IMO. If they gonna bump up the price to $35 then I expect Kia level of detail. I won't pay $40 though cuz I don't think it worth $40 unless it come with 3 outfit. Not paying $35 for the basic top, jacket, skirt and high heel combo that half of series 2 got.

At least for $40 US you get such a detailed and high quality doll. Can’t say the same with Barbie, which already makes this more worth it.
I think the extra $13.00 is for the fact that she is a special edition and exclusive to Target (so limited in numbers). I initially did not want to get her for that reason but, I really like her outfits and I’m not sure that Target will lower the price eventually so I may have to bite the bullet on this one.
The price is tough to swallow but she is an absolutely gorgeous doll one way or another! Thanks for watching!

I always ask myself if I’d pay the cost of the dolls clothes and accessories even without the doll. That helps me a lot in deciding to get any new dolls.
I agree Kia, while very beautiful and another great doll in the Rainbow High series; doesn't really seem to justify her $40 price point. I think its only that way because she's a "Special Edition" doll and often times they are a little more expensive then the basic line, but they could've justified it better. It'd be better if they instead included a special light up stand or something. Heck, even one other complete outfit would make sense. Despite it, I still hope to find her. She's very cute, and her style is totally in my radar.
Also, personally I think it's funny how so many characters are being introduced through their dolls before we even meet them in the show.
The special edition tag alone plus the little extra flourishes in her jacket and box seem to be the only possible reasons for the price inflation. And yup you're right, most other collector/special edition dolls from MGA have had light up stands and other clear added details. Frankly I'd be fine paying $50 for Kia if she came with a light up specialty stand and more 'collector's edition' looking box. And yeah...quite interesting we're getting hordes of these characters in doll form before we have any idea who some of them are in the animated series lol. Hopefully that changes soon, given we got little appearances by River, Stella and now Amaya!

Honestly as a former american girl collector, I am more than willing to pay $40 for her. Not to mention I would wear all of her outfits irl and she's so far my rainbow high mini me, I'll probably be buying her. That being said, I've seen photos of her with terrible rooting, and bad quality control which is frustrating especially at her price point.
The little sweet heart on the sleeve says "be sweet" not darling. Wonderful video regardless and will definitely be getting her after watching despite the far out price 😬

Tbh I'm more than a little bit salty that she's $40 in America but $60 in Canada. I get that there's currency exchange to think about, but a $20 difference is a bit much. Compared to prices of OMG and Rainbow High in the rest of the world, you guys complaining about paying 40 bucks for a doll is unfair.
We aren’t saying $40 is too much in general, just that it doesn’t make sense comparatively to what Kia comes with as opposed to the other $26.99 dolls. And international currencies differ in value. $40 USD isn’t the equivalent of $40 CAD.

International collectors unfortunately will often pay higher prices for products produced and distributed mainly in countrie(s) outside their own off import / distribution costs alone. Similarly here in the US, I’ve had to pay inflated prices for products like Nendoroid figures or items distributed mainly in Japan or other territories. The issue is Kia costs a good deal more, comparatively, than previous dolls sold here, but it doesn’t feel like that additional value is there to justify it. She’s a lovely doll regardless!
This is just a silly argument. International stuff are always more expensive like toy chat stated. This is an American doll so American get it cheaper. When I buy Japanese stuff I pay more then Japanese people. Usually I pay double the original price. Should I go complaining that it not fair Japanese people get Japanese good cheaper then me? I mean they only have to ship across sea and pay the $20 + shipping fee but somehow it just not fair??? And if Japanese people say their stuff is too expensive then they shouldn't cuz I have to pay more then them already and that unfair. It just not a reasonable complaint/comparison. International stuff have stuff like international taxes, shipping etc that hike the price up.

No luck in finding her in my area of Texas. I have looked at many of my Target's, but she is nowhere to be found..even though Target said she is available at all the stores I went to! HUH? She is a beautiful doll, but I am skeptical of paying that 39.99 price. She really is no different than the other Rainbow High Dolls in my opinion. Limited addition will always mean a higher price point.
