  • Devizes to Westminster 2023 - A Record Year!
Watching the race to break the historic Devizes to Westminster course record play out. "All the fast crews could break the record" was what Tom Sharpe said to us in the car park while getting ready, the conditions were that good..... but of course, only one crew would be able to keep it, if they were successful!
We managed to capture the first and last crews to leave Devizes, as well as the key players in the battle both to win the race and, potentially, finally, break the course record. The competition was hot and the paddling talent huge. If not this year, then when?
This film is all about the record attempt(s), unlike some other years' films where we're able to linger at different spots to show lots of entrants on their own personal journeys. So, much of the action is focused on the top ten prospects for the race win and showing them at key points along the course.
Filming DW is always both rewarding and frustrating in equal measure. Rewarding because of what we witness and the performances crews put in but it's also frustrating because we're unable to film so many crews and so many other interesting locations along the canal and river.
This year though, because of the nature of the 2023 race, our logistical scope was fixed so even though it would have been nice to cover more crews, given the potential for history to be made, we figured they would understand!
    Enjoy!

A great video but please remember another DW record was also broken - in the Folding Boat class. Tom Rendell and Joe Maynard smashed the course record by 32 minutes to finish in 21 hours and 53 minutes. An extraordinary paddle. 😊

Another great video. A fantastic edition of the race. Of course, huge congratulations to the record makers and all the other crews. Also, I agree with your comments about the DW organisation and their response to the situation. It took considerable diplomatic skills, clear thinking and guts.👏👏👏
