@@Riccksu most people on the eastern roman empire were greek, or greek speaking people and referred to themselves as greeks(hellenes/έλληνες). Some roman emperors (first of which was Theodosius i think) wanted to spread Christianity and believed the ancient greek religion was paganic so they would cut someone's tongue if they referred to themselves as greek, and if they continued doing greek religion stuff they would kill them. All that began in the 4th Century and thats when people started calling themslves Roman, because they were forced to. But still the people living near Constantinople called themselves Byzantines (Βυζαντινοί) because Byzantium was the first name of Constantinople since 8th century BC i think. I dont understand why people dont get it and believe so much what they see on the internet. It's called Byzantine to tell the difference between the time when Rome was primarily Latin and pagan or Latin influenced and we call the eastern romans Byzantines since Greek influence has been dominant and roman culture like legions for example where being replaced, I think the term byzantine is great since it represents change of a civilization throughout the centuries. Don't get me wrong I believe the Byzantines to be the heirs of Rome but ever since the rise of the Muslims and the empire having to adapt throughout the centuries created a more diverged culture than what their ancestors were.

The Roman Empire could have and would have returned to all Mediterranean countries in the 600s if not for the Arab Muslims. Because of them, Mare Nostrum was forever split and Rome (meaning the Eastern Empire by now) couldn't control the seas and profit nearly as much from the trade within them. They also lost large populations in Egypt, Syria, and North Africa (around Carthage).
