World premiere play written and directed by John Patrick Shanley
with Annika Boras, Timothée Chalamet, Robert Sean Leonard,
Chris McGarry, David Potters
Prodigal Son is a passionate, explosive portrait of a young man on the verge of salvation or destruction, written and directed by John Patrick Shanley (of Tony, Academy Award, and Pulitzer Prize fame). A 17-year-old boy (Timothée Chalamet) from The Bronx finds himself suddenly in a private school in New Hampshire. He’s violent, gifted, alienated, on fire with a ferocious loneliness. Two faculty members (Tony Award winner Robert Sean Leonard and Chris McGarry) wrestle with the dilemma: Is the kid a star or a disaster?
The world premiere of Prodigal Son marks another exciting step forward in the collaboration between Manhattan Theatre Club and this visceral New York playwright (Doubt, Outside Mullingar).

The day after this play finished Timmy got on the plane to Italy to shoot "Call me by your name". The rest is history.
This play happened in January, Latest February so they could upload it on to RUclips.
Filming for CMBYN didn't start until May. One Month, not one day.
@@lmaoqasim Timothee has said many times he was in Crema long before shooting started.
thats so stupid
holy fucking shit that is insane
omg yes *sobbing*
Wait that’s the guy from Dead Poet’s Society. And Timothée, oml he’s going places. I hope he wins the Oscar.
Kay_ Carlsin no he isn't from DPS
Michaela Siefering they were referring to robert sean leonard, the older man in the video.
Frankie Stein OMG I HAD NO CLUE. I LOVE NEIL IN DPS
Katie O'Connor and from house md, my favourite show
Robert Sean Leonard?
I knew he would become a great actor. He's good, really good.
Timothee inhabits his character 100%!
I hope so badly that he wins an oscar this year !!
2 years later, he still is
@@catherinebuiii he still isn't past you💔
DPS reference?
I hate when people laugh during such important lines and scenes. He’s SERIOUS.
I think lines can be important and serious and simultaneously be funny. There's a reason Shakespeare had jokes in even his most tragic plays.
Madeline Voelkel people also tend to laugh when they don’t know exactly how to react. I think there is some of that here.
OMG YES, THIS HAPPENS SOO MANY TIMES IN TV SHOWS AND THEY ARE LIKE TALKING ABOUT SEROUS TOPICS, AND THEN YOU JUST HEAR PEOPLE LAUGHING! I HATE IT SOOO MUCH!
The biggest pleasure of live theatre is the audience's reaction. Let them react the way they do.
You have to have some levity in every serious play. If you don't, the drama becomes stilted and oppressive.
He is such a great actor that everytime I watch him playing a character he makes me believe that he is actually like that . The way he expresses his character on screen is just so beautiful and when his character is upset or is in pain I could also feel the pain .He is really a great actor.
Simran Vyas and the fact a lot of actors nowadays play characters that are the sameish and they play characters that are similar to themselves but Timothee plays a range of different characters - makes us believe he’s them- and if you’ve noticed he is not like most of his characters he’s geeky and shy and humble and a lot of his characters differ from that
@@lauren7194 yes I did notice after watching his interviews like for call me by your name I was totally convinced that he is homosexual in real life but this was not true 🙃
Simran Vyas yeah he’s very good at what he does and very passionate
@@lauren7194 and I think that his passion and love for acting makes him such an amazingly skilled actor
Simran Vyas same
I'm glad Neil was so inspired by Mr Keats that he came back from the dead to help other kids realize their dreams.
An underated comment
Lmao
On an alternate reality he became a doctor, he goes by the name James Wilson now
He is an amazing actor! I mean look at his expressions. No wonder Armie keeps saying that Timmy wears his emotions in his sleeves.
Expressions? Where? He keeps making his same boring face with pouty eyes.
@@anis.9219 Why are you watching this video if you don't like his acting?
Because I love Robert Sean Leonard.
Everyone here’s praising Timothee for his performance but I really feel Robert Sean Leonard deserves a shout-out for the wonderful warmth and natural conviction he brings to the role!
Right? he always displays such sensitivity on his performances
MAN WHEN I SAW ROBERT SEAN LEONARD I LEGIT SCREAMED, SO MUCH TALENT BETWEEN HIM AND TIMMY
Neil’s dreams came true in another life.
i was like, man this guy looks a lot like the guy in dead poets society, and it turned out IT WAS HIM
I KNOW
You should read the entire play. Their chemistry is there for a reason and turns into a major plot twist that changes the ENTIRE story. It's a BRILLIANT piece of writing.
@Fenna Seebregts as far as I know, no. But like I said, the script is on Amazon and it’s 100% worth reading!
A real talent. I look forward to see his career growth.
ImIFnh His movie is Oscar-nominated and so is he. 🤗
this aged well 😭
please tell me why this comment made me cry so mucH
Have you watched any of his new movies? If so what did you think of them?
Wow
he gives his all
Lions mane Like every actor does.
señor, hmmm not every actor gives their all
@@burpie3258 They do, some just don't much "all" to give.
@@MrCrowebobby Umm again, I doubt every actor gives their all. I have personally seen this.
burpie give an example then since youve “seen it”
If ever they will remake Rebel without a cause he could definitely fit for the role of James Dean.
New Yorker oh my god YESss
Exactly what I thought of
.... you mean Jim Stark. James Dean wasn’t a character he was the actor in Rebel Without a Cause and he played Jim Stark!
I disagree but respect your opinion
Let's hope the industry will respect the film Rebel Without a cause and the fate of James Dean and not remake it...
Omg Wilson from House
When he screams there's everything, the emotions man, its so great to see such talent shine and be seen and recognized by people, he surely deserved every single fucking award out there. Hes not the second Leonardo I'm telling you, he's the FIRST Timothée Chalamet.
@luna saad it can go both ways tbh.
@@shakyamparo4295 the guy is unique, a 1 in a million
OMG Robert Sean Leonard and Timothee Chalamet acting together. Be still my heart!
Prodigal son is like another version of beautiful boy.
Is there anywhere I can get a copy of the whole play? Timothée is spectacular!
This made me realize how long it's been since I've seen Robert Sean Leonard. I miss him.
I've never seen Robert Sean Leonard act like that. Omg he's so good
I'm just here for Robert
"What are you gonna do After you draduate"
"If i graduate". The story of my godamn life.
Some actors turn the world into a mirror, others destroy all illusion and immerse themselves in the "real". This kid deserves all my respect. Admirable
“A man of letters” I like that expression ~
Robert Sean Leonard AND Timothy Chalmette
What a dream ❤️😂
Look at Robert, still brilliant as ever
He never had to get a BFA, stress over the decision of becoming an actor, fight with his own expectations or society’s- he was groomed for this level of success since childhood, he paid his dues, and the stars have aligned beautifully for him- that’s what you call the “IT” factor. It’s an ultimate combo of talent, luck, and opportunity. Timothee’s truly blessed
Agreed, but he did have some stress over becoming an actor, though undoubtedly not nearly as much when compared to others. His parents apparently really pressured him to stay in college instead of going for acting, but he eventually dropped out and really struggled from 2014-2017 as he was kind of just scraping by in the Bronx and not getting many lucrative roles. I see a lot of people state that Timothy came from a rich, well connected family, essentially boiling down his success to nepotism, and they were definitely well off, but not "millionaire" status rich. He grew up in an a subsidized apartment complex with relatively minor family connections to show business. I had a lot of down time during quarantine last year, obviously. lol
Timothée's lines:
Okay. I know! God I hate him. Mnaah. He doesn't, he doesn't try to understand anybody. Looks at me like I'm disgusting. Yeah, have you talked to him about me? What'd he say. He's wife? I don't think she liked me. Why? What? Oh. If I graduate. Right. Yes. What do you think is gonna happen to me? I mean, you know. What could I do for a job? Why not a man of letters? A poet.
(Don't ask why I did this Idk)
If I was a casting director and I witnessed his audition, I’m pretty sure I’d act all profession until the end, give it a few seconds and just shout “HE’S GOOD!” And give him the part immediately 😂
i love robert. his acting is top notch. always been a fan of him and his amazing acting
He is a star. Doubtless
His expressions are just really intimidating and powerful that i could also feel that emotions pouring out of him..
Acting with Robert Sean Leonard on stage. Well that had to be exciting. This is very good stage performing
I want to see the whole play now, and the themes I'm seeing from these clips- I'm so stoked to see Robert Sean Leonard playing a role like this. Love Dead Poet society
Have you seen the show house
He’s a main character in it and the best one there
A lot of pain inside that young boy. I bet it’s cathartic for him to act
This takes me back to Dead Poet's Society! So glad Robert Sean Leonard got this role.
Man...I am so obsessed with Timmy...Such a good actor, seriously.
he is so talented it makes me wanna cry
He's wonderful in this play. definitely holds his own.
I know we say this after the fact, but I recall years ago when I was a kid, watching Tom Hanks on Bosom Buddies, that 80s sitcom, thinking that Tom Hanks seemed better than any of the other cast. It wasn’t a kid thing to think about, but I do remember thinking that he seemed like he belonged in films, not television. I feel like I spotted the talent...and while we now know that Chalamet is a worthy actor, I think you can tell in this early performance, he has that facial emotional thing that good acting delivers. He doesn’t sound unnatural and self conscious like some amateur actors sound. You know what I’m talking about. His whole face and body acts the part. The lines really flow from inside...not just a script. When you see him in roles, the acting talent really shows. I think many people who criticize him only do so because at his age, certain roles are just not available to him yet...so of course the critics will argue that he plays the same role over and over...well, yeah...he’s playing a young man, a high school or college student. That’s his age. He’s not been given many roles outside of that range yet. But he plays them WELL. I believe his characters. He comes across as authentic. Like he truly cares about the craft of acting. I really appreciate that in actors. Willed Defoe, Al Pacino, Robert Redford, Meryl, Jack, Annette Benning, Timothy Hutton, De Nero, Judy Dench...these are actors who truly care about the art of characterization. I hope Chalamet continues to grow as an actor. He’s not at legendary status yet, not even close...but he is good.
sign543 thank you for writing this comment! It is great and I completely agree
Wow a gem, thank you.
I would pay very good money to see timothee in this live, tho it's unlikely that he would recreate something he's already in, or for it to be taken to stage again, but still he's so good in this, his acting skill is just the kind I like with emotional control as well as vulnerability, and you don't get confused abt what he's trying to convey, his delivery has clarity, and it fills me with awe really. It's a treat to watch him act.
these are literally my two favorite actors oh my god
this video is three years old today and he hasn’t aged
He is one of the perfect and best artists.
I think this is one of his best pieces!!
The actor with timothee is wonderful too
