    Okay so I ordered a new battery last week and it arrived today. Replaced my battery just now, everything works fine.
    Great instruction video!

    Thank You iFixit! I love my iPhone 5S and can't bear to let it go. Resources and products like this allow me to keep it functioning!

    Followed instructions and pretty much went as shown in video. I also broke off adhesive without it pulling neatly from under the old battery, but with slow, gentle persuasion from the spludger, it slowly peeled out. My battery came with new adhesive strips, so it was easy to see where they went back. Something else I had to figure out is that right next to the battery connector is what I believe is the antenna plug, a tiny plug with center pin and surrounding shield/"jack". This came loose when I pried up the battery connector, and at first I thought it was just a grounding lug that trapped under the battery plug cover, but no, under magnification it was clearly a mini "RCA" type plug. Battery was about 1%charged, so it's charging now, we'll see how it improves performance over old, failing battery. Thanks for the good, descriptive video.

    I just did the replacement today, and of course, my adhesive strips snapped very early after beginning to pull. You can use a normal blow dryer to warm up the adhesive from the back of the phone (i.e., do not directly blow hot air on the battery). I then used strips I cut from a playing card to carefully get behind the battery without bending it too much.
    The spudger works great to remove the old glue once the battery is out and SMALL amounts of double-sided tape hold the new battery in just fine :)

    Dear Gwendoline:
    Your instructions worked perfectly. Using all the suggested tools, I replaced the defective battery with a High-Capacity-Internal-Li-ion 2680 mAh battery. The phone works perfectly. Thanks for the instruction.

      Yeah also make sure you don't pry the battery out from the inner side of the phone (where boards are) since many people broke tiny power/home button chips that are close to the battery.

    Thanks for this. I recently got scammed, I was sold an iPhone 5S in perfect condition, except the battery was defunct. I'll buy one of your kits and attempt this as soon as I can. The phone is relatively quick in 2020 despite it's age. How is the battery life with iFixit batteries?

    • @mechanicalruby
      @mechanicalruby 4 года назад +3

      It's been a while, but iFixit batteries are the same capacity and have similar lifespan to original batteries, if not more. They're fairly reputable however if you have problems with it you can seek out OEM batteries, though they are difficult to locate new as they are no longer produced.

    Thanks for the video. Replaced the battery on my wife's iPhone 5s. Unfortunately the glue stuff just snapped when I pulled the tags, and I had to prise the battery off the glue. The battery really DID NOT like being prised and bent up. In fact, it was smoking and at times I could see small sparks. Apart from that, the tricky bits were the screws holding the plates over the screen ribbon connectors (I removed the screen, I had to, in order to lever the battery out). The screws are so tiny, much smaller than the screws on this video. I used a kit, with tiny screwdriver and I still had to use some blue tack to hold the screws onto the screwdriver, in order to line them up with the holes. To be fair, this was a PITA job and one I would not like to try again.

    Battery Replacement Successful!
    Removing the screen with suction cup wasn't easy, there's no good way to hold the case without also pressing on the screen, and it requires a lot of force. But I managed to find an opening eventually and pried it loose. The first adhesive broke but the second one did come loose, so I had to use some brute force to remove the battery.
    Applying the adhesive on the battery didn't go very smoothly, but reassembling everything else was pretty straightforward, even the tiny home button connector.
    Wouldn't recommend this with a new iphone, it is a bit of a risky endeavor.

  • @Flamadiddle2
    @Flamadiddle2 5 лет назад

    Just replaced mine and no need to remove the screen. Just hold onto the screen at or less than 90 degrees while you remove the battery. The tiny battery connector and home screen connector were a real pita, but finally got them back on. One tip, find a big magnifying glass and get someone to hold it for you while you work on the clips/screws. Your eyes will thank you!

  • @hossak88

    Great product...job done in half an hour. Kit came with phillips screws to replace the small torx screws by the power port. Glue strips pulled out just like in the video with no heat application needed, and the phone is working like new.
    First reassembly attempt I messed up the alignment of the touch screen cable connector...lines on screen, and touch screen inoperable...took it apart and realigned the connector, which 100% fixed the problem. It looked like I had done the reconnection correctly the first time...just saying it's not easy to see the alignment, so if you have these issues it's worth a try to realign.

    small comment: the metal guard that fits over the thumb or home button connector is upside down in your video, before you remove it. I've watched several other videos as this thing is giving me hell and in all the other videos the clasp is rotated 180 degrees. Still a major pain in the A getting it to securely re-attach. I'm about to give up rather than have it rattling around in my phone potentially shorting something out. But your tip on removing the adhesive was smart. My directions just said pry up on the old battery which I completely destroyed in doing so. Pretty sure I saw molten lava pore out of it at one point. Fortunately phone still works... but not the home button at the moment :|

  • @markg999

    Bought kit from amazon and it took a hour or so but done. No need removing screen. Biggest issue is glue on battery...hair dryer worked though. Not that hard just take your time.

  • @Sandymount
    @Sandymount 7 лет назад

    Good video overall but the details are off sometimes. For example there's a fudge cut when removing adhesive that means you can't tell how far to go with elasticated sticky stuff when removing it and you can't see how you got it around the corner of the battery. Also I was checking for how the home button's ribbon-cable cover-clip was connected but you have it on backwards. I assume it flipped off when opening (as it always does for me) and you replaced it but wrong way around. If those little things were corrected this would be the best video I've seen as the clarity and production quality is excellent.

    the tabs around the battery snapped without pulling very hard, I tried to pry the battery out with the plastic opening tool and the battery caught fire!!! Phone is toast! great product....german quality..super fast and easy.My phone is back in shape.
    TIPS:
    FOr people having lines or shades on screen...make sure the black part of battery adhesive is WELL fold and doesn't push on the screen from inside.Happened to me..had to open again and fold it nicely...anything that is higher than the battery will touch the screen from inside and fuck with it.

    1) If you afford do it with the master. 2) Omg! I did it myself!!! When you watch 5min hair tutorial and repeat, usually it doesn't look the same. Try to replace the iPhone battery! F.. it is not fun though! It took me one hour, and except the tools for the battery replacement I used the nail kit&brow twizers. The white adhesive under the battery and the clipping back the small cap are annoying parts:)). Will I do it again? Yes! Tomorrow gona replace the iPad battery. Gota learn this as apple products user because apple not gona make the assembly part user friendly.

    It's not that simple. I'm pretty good with these things, but it took maybe an hour & a ton of patience. There were some curses spoken. Both adhesive strips just broke off right away instead of coming off the way they do in her video. So, prying the old battery out was kinda scary with sparks and smoke. Getting the cables reattached was really difficult but I managed to get the phone reassembled correctly on the second try... If your eyesight isn't good, forget about it.

    When prying the battery out, be very cautious of the electrical ribbon harness which runs underneath of the top third of the battery. It is easy to snag on this, and scratch it, permanently damaging the ribbon and causing loss of volume control button operation.

    Don”t waste your time. The parts, and especially the screws, are microscopically tiny and extremely difficult to manipulate. I got the battery replaced but the iPhone itself is ruined. It turned on but there are lines on the screen and the touchpad display doesn’t work. I followed the instructions EXACTLY. Better to trade in the old iPhone than turn it into a brick by following this video.

    • @hossak88
      @hossak88 6 лет назад +1

      I had the touchpad cable incorrectly lined up, and had the same symptoms...removed and replaced the connector in the correct alignment, the lines went away, and touchpad and display are now perfect. It was very hard to tell, and I thought for sure I had it right the first time, but apparently I didn't...check again, and see if you can bring it back to life.

    The screws are almost al different exept for the two holidng the battery connector which are 1,6mm. The screen bracket is hold by 1•1,2mm + 1•1,3mm + 1•1,7mm + 1•1,7mm non-magnetic screw. Intresting that my iPhone 5S and iPhone SE had the wrong screws attached from factory, or rather the right screws but placed totally wrong, acorcingly to iFix-it anyway. I trust iFix-it a lot more than the pressed chinese workers accuracy, that’s for sure.
    Identical setting on the 5S and the SE.

    Love the video. But I have a new problem that I can't find any info on. Replaced the battery. Was just doing a boot loop only when plugged in and the battery showed a voltage of 2.7 when tested. New battery allowed the phone to be restored and worked for half a day. But then it broke. Thought maybe it was just a bad replacement battery so I installed another battery and made sure it received a full charge. Phone worked fine for a half day and now it's dead. Screen only turns on when plugged in and it is stuck in a boot loop. expecting that I now have three batteries that won't supply full voltage anymore and that the phone is ruining the batteries.
    Where do I start testing this. Is it likely the motherboard or the charge port?

(Basically it's a bug in iOS that you fix using the Date & Time settings - it's stuck searching for the time zone.) Turn OFF the "Set Automatically" option, set the time & date manually, power down completely and then restart. "Searching..." should now be fixed...

    I see this video is very helpful, but how can I be sure that something wrong who's the battery why it doesn't be in the cable or charging system???

      karim taha love this question--you're on the right track! There is no way to be sure. The easy thing to do is just start troubleshooting---replacing a battery is an easy job, and if that doesn't solve you did deeper!

    Okay, well I got to the part where I'm supposed to pull the adhesive out and it broke. Both of them. How do I remove the batter when I can't get the adhesive out?

    We don't have to remove the screen for replacement i think.

    Hey guys. I was on the site ready to buy a battery kit but noticed that the site links out to a Chinese website ( towards the bottom of the site). Could you explain that?

    My battery life sucks on my iPhone 5S, but the main problem is after years of using it the battery is swollen up and pushing screen out of the frame/case. Same exact thing happened to my iPhone 5. Bought a replacement battery for the iPhone 5, replaced the battery myself and everything was fine, EXCEPT from where it had previously pushed the screen out of the frame, it no longer held in place firmly after the repair. Because the screen was loose and wobbly dust and air, maybe even water got in behind the screen and ruined it about 3 months after the replacement. Anyone else have this issue??? Because it’s happened to me back to back and I’m not sure what the fix is from the screen and frame...

    By changing the battery, will it make your phone just like a brand new phone? By brand new I mean the battery life, will it change the battery life? Please reply, im desperate for having my battery replaced and my front camera fixed.

      @robthesamplist 9 лет назад

      of course it will change the battery life, it will be close to brand new unless you have a defective replacement battery or a really shit one from ebay. There is no such thing as a genuine apple replacement part btw the only way you will get a genuine part is from an apple store visit repair or if you know someone or a business with an authorised reseller business status. Im guessing ifixit batteries are probably the same ones you would get on eBay for 10 dollars.. but i could be wrong they could be of slightly better quality but you can't tell from the site as it has no reviews :(

      @Ronnie1001 8 лет назад

      +Hervilho Manuel Did you mean "interchangeable"? Yes they are - but the capacity of the 5C battery is 1510mAh compared to the 5S battery which is 1560mAh. Same size, shape and connector.
