Hello ..I broke free from a religious cult 5 years ago after 40 years indoctrination . I set off on a new journey to find myself . My father had bright red hair and was as strong as an ox , mentally and physically …I always felt an affinity with Celtic , Viking things . At last I found Nordic My..theology ……it feels like home !!!! Love this channel and subscribed . Love from West Yorkshire U.K.

The Picts were known for their bright red hair. Less is known about them as the Scots became the prevailing tribe. Charlemagne took all of our history and religion. Good luck on your new journey!

Excellent video. Beautiful season wheel. I could suggest counter-clock-wise (or rather moon-wise). As the Moon moves left each night at the same hour as observed from the northern hemisphere.

I expected the wheel to go counter-clockwise. It looks like the charts I use in Western Sidereal Astrology, where the Sun Signs and Houses go counter-clockwise around the circle.

As my mother was full Danish, I find it interesting that the family name was always taken from the mother. Not until my grandfather and grandmother married in the US did this change. My grandmother and her mother always had a myrrh "tree". I've met Icelandic friends which have kept their history better than the mainland. The lunar month is interesting in itself as very few peoples used it.

Fun and interesting writings that appear here and speculations.
I am Icelandic, but my grandfather (name, James Hoggard Chadwick and my grandmother is Icelandic).
The Christmas holiday in Icelandic is "Jól"
Saturday in Icelandic is "Laugardagur" Laugar is a plural for many pools in Iceland to bathe in.
Celebrating "Þorrablót" is a custom in Iceland. We eat food according to an old tradition and is considered very good, especially the shark.

In the Netherlands we have a celebration too. It's called Sint Nikolaas. Who gives presents to children that behaved well that year. And this figure is infact the Christian transation of Wodan. He rides his horse (Sleipnir ) over the roofs of houses in company of some black figures we call Zwarte Pieten ( Black petes) . Now one can only assume that they wore his two crow companions as in our Pagan history!

Very interesting video thank you. I am left with questions and wanting to know more.
Firstly if the months followed the lunar calendar surely there would be 13 months most years and the months would travel through the solar year so wouldn't be able to be specifically affiliated to summer or winter. How does this system work logistically?
Secondly was it the Norse that derived the seven day week or was that universal at the time? Did this purposefully tie into months as a lunar month is loosely 28 days?
Thirdly is the implication that Odin is the original Father Christmas?

    • @Randi-k6m
      @Randi-k6m 6 лет назад +4

Stephen. I think the 7 day week was quite universal. But it is Germanic / Norse language that is responsible for the English names of weekdays today, except Saturday. I think it was like this: when the Saxons, the Frisians, and from Denmark the Angles and Jutes settled in England in the 5th century, they brought with them the names of the days. Then, when the Roman Catholic Church came to England, they couldn’t accept "Laugdag" which meant bathing day. The Catholic Church saw it is a big SIN to be "vain" because then you put yourself before Jesus. So they probably banned the week name "Laugdag" and replaced it with the Roman name "Saturday" which by the way was pagan as well, as the Romans also had kept their old names for weekdays. I guess it took quite a while, because you just don’t replace a word used for hundreds of years with another from one day to the other. But in my view, it is the only logic explanation why a pagan roman god sneaked into the Norse, and also that it was precisely this one and not another one. Monks actually bragged about that they haven’t been washed for years..... and the Catholic church bashed the "heathens" that is the Vikings who came 350 years after the first wave, for their "disgusting habit of bathing often, their luxurious clothing, their fashion in hairstyle with bare necks and blinded eyes, and obsession with combing their hair often" and so on. The problem was that the ladies in England actually liked nice handsome clean men for a change, so they ran away with the Vikings, "married women and even daughters of noblemen, causing unrest in the whole country" as the church wrote in angry letters. The church became even more furious when English noblemen including royals, began to imitate the Vikings. I have read a lot of contemporary writings of this “huge” problem for the church, it is quite hilarious. .
About Santa, nobody seems to agree about the origin. “Yule” was a pagan feast in December, amongst other things to celebrate Odin. We don’t use the word “Christmas” in the Nordic countries, but still the old name “Yule” just spelled slightly different but pronounced the same way, “Jul” or Christmas time = “Jule tid” :-)

Is it possible (probable?) that Laugdag or 'bathing day' was originally according to the moon? Every quarter moon phase and then it got added to the 7 day week when the Danes were forcibly Christianised? As a preparation for going to Church on sunday.

Well, crowsbaneful, have you considered the fact that the reason why your ancestors ate so much animal products might have something to do with the fact that plant-based foods simply aren't that readily available for half the year in Scandinavia? I actually got really sick the time I tried eating a vegetarian diet, because one of the legacies of my Norse ancestors was a limited ability to process non-heme iron. Even though I have gone back to eating meat I need weekly iron injections, which is an absolute pain in the neck because I have to bus in to town once a week to get them, and sit in the Medical Day Treatment centre for an hour with a tube sticking out of my arm! If you choose not to eat meat, it's your business, but go get your hemoglobin count checked!

What's the significance of the ubiquitous use of 12 in everything in the ancient world up till today? There doesn't _have to be_ 12 houses in astrology... Eggs don't have to be sold by the dozen... Last time I checked I have 10 fingers, though I remember reading that the ppl of antiquity counted on their fingers, but used their knuckles and that is 12... Is it an artifact of some control mechanism that straight jackets all of us that we're never told about or the way ppl used to count on their knuckles? I always assume malevolence until proven otherwise.
