This is a great review, thanks for showing the book. I also would like to add Kaz Rowe's video about the subject if anyone is interested, she did research and gave some new perspective to his history. There's just so much of Leyendecker's life we won't know because time erased it or just didn't record. Those printed materials and videos helped my view on him, otherwise It would be impossible for me to see it, since I live on a different area. Thanks again!

I like your line about his work intimidating you. It's so vivid and assured. I was looking at a daffodil narcissus in my kitchen and was fascinated by it's structure. It seemed to be built like an old horn on a victrola. It had planes instead of curves. It made me think of Leyendecker and his approach to hair.

That is what great artist do to you. It makes you look in a different way. He sure simplified his shapes in peculiar ways. But it works wonderfully.

Many of Leyendecker's brush strokes are very geometric, yet convey a realistic image.

That's a great review. It's always fascinating to learn about the people behind those old artwork covers. Thanks for sharing

As with all of them, Leyendecker, became a pariah because The publisher of the magazine Post, and the public found out his preference for boys! However, he was a very great and innovative artist!

My grandfather shared a studio with him in New York. I was only 11 when my grandfather died back in 1968 and the family history of this chapter died with him. My grandfather was a great artist too who did many illustrations for magazines and was a commissioned war artist who settled in Australia after ww1 becoming head teacher and introduced the first life art classes at Sydney technical college but moved back to england where he married my grandmother and they had 5 boys. He moved to new york leaving his wife and young boys to establish himself in new york, and thats how he met and shared a studio place with Leyendecker. It's impossible to get any history now but I have a couple of lovely pencil sketches which appeared on covers of the Saturday Evening Post, whether they were copies my grandfather did or whether thay are original pencil Leyendecker sketches prior to the covers as they appeared on is hard to tell but one loose random unfinished sketch does have Leyendeckers distincive signature initials. The complete sketches are very beautiful but my grandfather was a master draftman so they might be his. My grandfather moved back to England but eventually settled in Australia and thats how I got to meet him, I was an artistic child and was his favourite granddaughter, only allowing me and not my sisters to watch him paint. I had raw talent and still do a lot of painting but I'm unfortunately inconsistant, I'm hoping I'm just a late bloomer! My father was also a great artist very disciplined. My grandfather and my father are still relatively unknown, my grandfather burnt a lot of art, he rarely signed anything but he was a master, his portraits, horses and trees and landscapes are magnificent, but his temperament prevented hime from achieving any fame. I hope you find this interesting Stayf Draws, I just found your chanel and I'm enjoying it very much and thought you might find this interesting from one of your subscribers, cheers

Thanks for your story. What a thrill to know that your grandfather shared a studio with Leyendecker. The sketches might be of Leyendecker. He also painted the studies, with different gestures of hands and feet. What is your grand father's name?

@@StayfDrawsthank you for your reply his name is Henry Woollcott, you can read about him and see how he became a commissioned war artist through the Australian War memorial site, the only other art in the public domain was a few paintings auctioned about 20 years ago and they circulate but are undervalued
