Joma, I’ve been working in FANG and quiet for 6 months. Don’t get stressful from peers. They are not happy. They just don’t know what to do in life besides thinking about money. Go travels and meet some inspiring ppl. Life is a choice.
This is such a wild video for me. His procrastination and view on college was the same as mine going in. I wasn't emotionally ready and if I didn't like a class I just didn't care about it and let it slip. Fascinating to see that I'm not alone in that mentality. I had to drop out for two years to finally find the maturity to go back and take it seriously
I haven't watched the podcast yet or whatever you wanna call it, but this came at the perfect time... right when I'm having the hardest time trying not to procrastinate
Let your guest talk more. As much as I enjoy your input and take on things, you’ve invited him to talk so try to extract the most you can out of the person you’re talking to. On a personal conversation level I struggle with not interrupting/one upping people too, but in terms of an interview it should be at least 70% the guest talking. The moments of silence you don’t fill will pull gems out of your guest, trust me.
Omar Idres Gurashi I agree, the conversation was pretty good and had a lot of insight, but I did feel that Joma wasn’t giving his guest the opportunity to finish/continue his side of the conversation pretty often.
8:20 i would seriously love to see you make a video on nofap. i'm a college student & a software engineer intern in his early 20s and porn and fap has been my biggest distraction and the biggest factor to my procrastination problem, i believe many software engineers struggle with this and it hinders their progress
what works for me is install a porn blocker and give the do a random password or disable internet access and just go to sturbucks if you need to reserch something and also mindfulness meditation helps in calming the urges
Krishna Ravishankar probably means that the team he wanted to move to was already full in terms of head count. so he would either have to wait for someone else to leave that team and make room for him, or just leave the company and join a similar team with another organization.
The streak concept can be applied to anything. The more time and effort you put into something that you know is important to your future, the higher the stakes get if you break the streak or come completely off of it. I haven't missed a workout in 4 years lol.
@@itsreason3238 when i get sick, i rest more so instead of 4-6 workouts a week, i might do less or just go easier, whenever im extremely busy, i train late at night sometimes passed midnight. But ive never missed a week. Also, you really only get extremely sick maybe what twice a year?
Really appreciate this zero to hero story, the fresh out of college intern to big tech money are just not relatable, nor productive at revealing the pathways into these lucrative careers. I especially appreciate the emphasis on the grit that goes with the glamour.
The thing with deadlines at work is that if you always hit the mark or exceed it they might just pull the deadline back further next time. So it doesn't always help when your PM gives you a deadline, you have to still know the situation well enough to know what the real deadline is. PMs would pull in deadlines more than they need to to sell themselves to upper management to get a bigger bonus, you might never know about it.
there is no way to prevent procrastination, you start by developing a routine which eventually turns into a habit. On days where you start procrastinating, or don't feel motivated to do anything that routine kicks in since it is now a habit. Just like how you would procrastinate every project, because you've turned it into a habit.
when Jonathan said sit there and think about shit. I just remember that during school time everyday i think about how would i save people if there was a school shooting.
How do people even skip 2 years of high school? Where I go to, everybody follows a course timetable and you can only take a certain amount of courses, and no matter how high of a grade you get, you still have to take all the courses for 4 years. This guy got mediocre grades and still got a high paying job. Definitely a huge exception and lucky to be where he is at and should not be taken as the norm.
totally agree on the not knowing how to deal with boredom. But disagree on that being the cause of people skipping grades. If they can go faster, then maybe they should... but they should still be hanging out with their peer group outside school. If you finish HS at 16, you could just take 2 gap years to do something awesome. But i don't see the point in being underchallenged in a class. I had that when I moved schools at 14, math was way behind in my new school. I slacked, and eventually sucked compared to before. We need challenge.
Is there a video somewhere of the full interview and not just parts of it? Somewhere where the links that are mentioned (reddit, blogposts) are in the description as the interviewer said he was going to put them?
Would have liked more from the guest, but I also understand that this is a more personal conversation format than traditional interview. One thing I've noticed in a few of your vids is your lack of eye contact while talking, remembering a story etc. I don't think that's a huge flaw for hardskill oriented positions, but I know FANGs and Banks look at those body language "flaws" very heavily for their business roles
Yep but he made a few good points. When i want to do work, i use the Block & Focus chrome extension, log out from all social media, discord, steam etc., turn off music, launch intellij, and go from there. All your mind is capable of doing really is 1 thing at a time, and it is remarkably good at knowing what to do next, but its incredibly bad at planning ahead, which is why we often procrastinate because we get scared of things we think are too big to tackle because we can't envision it. starting off just takes 1 step most of the time.
Does anyone have tips about procrastination and soft deadlines at work? I’m about to start working at a consonant and I’m really worried about not meeting performance because of soft deadlines (since if you don’t meet those small soft deadlines eventually you do nothing for a whole half year).
If y'all don't want to watch the sponsor at the beginning of the vid you know you can skip right? And stop complaining about the ads in his vids, do y'all not really want him to pay his bills???
Stop procrastinating and work on the startup series, joma
I second that Joma.
yesssssssss

Procrastination is my biggest enemy !!
Glad to hear a true story instead of theoretical solutions !

Joma so glad that you’re back and uploading constantly even if it’s the same video 😂
Man, this interview has been sooo damn informative and enlightening for me. Thanks for doing this!
Thanks, Man. Many of us may have listened to avoiding procrastination topic again and again. This sets as another reminder
love the way you brought up that advert for this app cleaning up your Mac! Genius and funny! :)
Joma, I’ve been working in FANG and quiet for 6 months. Don’t get stressful from peers. They are not happy. They just don’t know what to do in life besides thinking about money.
Go travels and meet some inspiring ppl. Life is a choice.
Video starts at 6:30
as much as I like his content, Joma neds to shut up more and let the guests speak

Your voices actually calmed me.
THIS PODCAST IS PURE GOLD!!!
You should make a podcast with interviews and stuff
JOMO is back! Wow!
Very creative ad!
Cyrus is so cool. I wish I had a friend like him
I like how you put efforts in the sponsor ads. I want to but the commercial right after seeing your funny promo...

joma is just saying his side, you say exteact as much information? he also did 3 more videos about this guy
THIS!
Omar Idres Gurashi I agree, the conversation was pretty good and had a lot of insight, but I did feel that Joma wasn’t giving his guest the opportunity to finish/continue his side of the conversation pretty often.
I was looking for this comment
To be fair I think they're friends so it prob seemed more like a normal conversation than a professional interview
8:20 i would seriously love to see you make a video on nofap.

Hi Joma, in the previous video u said u couldn't move internally because of head count? What does that mean?? Love your video content. Thanks!!
Krishna Ravishankar probably means that the team he wanted to move to was already full in terms of head count. so he would either have to wait for someone else to leave that team and make room for him, or just leave the company and join a similar team with another organization.
Seem likea good video for me,probably gonna watch it tmr
If you put Mac in watching machine with tide it will clear all your data
Wow. Cyrus is a beast. lol
Can you also talk more about how to get into flow states in any upcoming video. Thanks
The streak concept can be applied to anything. The more time and effort you put into something that you know is important to your future, the higher the stakes get if you break the streak or come completely off of it. I haven't missed a workout in 4 years lol.
dude.... like.. don't u ever get sick or miss a workout due to a surprise of some sort?

@@nhtathinfbntb2746 I understand. Continue the great work!

Cyrus : **Ashamed to tell his 1st sem GPA**
Joma : "tell me pls"
Cyrus : "sub 1"
Joma : Ahahahahahahaha
Start a podcast around these topics no one else is really covering this.

graduated high school 16 and also bomb 1 year of college, truly the age thing is important. a huge difference between 16 and 18 mental.
Clean my mac x sounds like an app that’s gonna steal my data 🤽🏾♂️
Nice explanations
Really good insights Jomq but it'd have been even better if you let your guests talk and not interrupt them as often
Biggest fan!!!!!!

Agree with his method!!!
This video is golden
I was attending college as a freshman at 15, it was hard, I couldn't stay, similar story minus the graduation.
8:19 sad this tangent didn't go anywhere lol
What do you think about BigMl and automathization of data analysis?? Do you think it could substitute some Data Science employee??
Can you stop talking over the guest speaker!!!!
6:00 brooo ! I too have like A+s and then Ds ! And also a big procastinator 😂

Joma makes me want to get mac to install cleanMyMacX
Ironically watching this video is a form of procrastination itself.

I can win a noble prize for procrastination
Almost everything he talks about is in a book called Motivation Hack by Nick Winters. Amazing book if you’re interested.
"I do well before a deadline"
Everyone does :)
this video hit me like a truck, loved it tho.
Who's the guest? He works on and thinks about the exact same stuff I do. Would like to learn more
Watching this while procrastinating
Emotionally unstable. Now I know why I am dumber than others in college.
talk more about pushing back deadlines - idk why the video was stopped early?
Joma, can you keep eye contact with whom you speak, please? :D
Wow joma getting sponsored by ransomware now.
this is the hard ADS
Where is the tip for procrastination?
Cute smile on the guest.
Pomodoro is literally tomato in italian
My calculus homework is literally in the next tab...
I just finished the video, s'pose I'll do my homework now >_>
How did he get first internship? First SE job?
I don't see a link to the sponsor.
If you were really dedicated you would've put your mac under the faucet.
Does anyone have tips about procrastination and soft deadlines at work? I’m about to start working at a consonant and I’m really worried about not meeting performance because of soft deadlines (since if you don’t meet those small soft deadlines eventually you do nothing for a whole half year).
Yesss more Cyrus

If y'all don't want to watch the sponsor at the beginning of the vid you know you can skip right? And stop complaining about the ads in his vids, do y'all not really want him to pay his bills???
I know sponsor intro is supposed to funny, but that was hard to watch.
