Van Life Northern Ireland - there's a problem buying our 200 year old cottage.
This week we drive our self converted campervan into Northern Ireland. After bidding on, and buying, a 200 year old remote cottage in Ireland, we were keen to get back to some travel.
But, as with all roads to "living the dream", the path is never smooth, as we well know (lets not talk about all the van life breakdowns!)
We can't wait to start living a simple life off the grid in our very own tiny home, but for now, we are just keeping our fingers crossed that the extra surveys will come back with good results.
Northern Ireland is a great place to explore and distract ourselves though, as we find our favourite hike of the trip, visit Belfast Christmas market, and take in the coastal scenery. The two minute tours also resume this week, as we take a break from wild camping and stay on a rather lovely campsite.

As usual, we have tried to include a bit of everything, some cinematic scenery mixed with our usual female van life foolery, we always love hearing what you lot think in the comments so do let us know, and as always, thank you for watching!

Just to correct you about the hedge schoolmaster. That hedge school dates back to the Penal Laws in Ireland which lasted for 150 years from the early 1700s to the late 1800s. The laws were imposed by Britain on the Irish population (99% of whom were Catholic) and included the law that all existing schools should be closed and no Irish catholic child could receive an education.
This led to the widespread establishment of secret schools around the Irish countryside, known as hedge schools because they were usually surrounded by high hedges to try and hide them from the British authorities. Secret schools were also held in caves and other natural hiding places. You said that there had been no educational system in Ireland. There had been an excellent education system before the Penal Laws were introduced, so much so that in the middle ages Ireland was known internationally as "the island of saints and scholars". Hope this helps explain that cave school and its wonderful hedge schoolmaster.

Thank you Helena for the background info on hedge schools in Ireland. Speaking of 'The Island of Saints and Scholars' I lived for a decade in mainland Europe where German and Italian friends reminded me of Saint Kilian who founded Wurtzburg and Saint Colombano who founded the monastery town of Bobbio which I visited. Your post also reminded me to refresh my knowledge of Brehon Law.

So true, Helena. Sadly, the secret hedge schools were essential for many of those who were not of the Anglican faith. The "Land of Priests and Scholars" enlightened Europe from the Dark Ages and many continental places were given Irish names by those missionary priests. Ironically, one river valley they named "samhradh" - "peaceful place". That Irish name evolved to what it is today - the Somme, where so many Irishmen as well as others of many nationalities sacrificed their lives.

  • @fionaquigley9457
    @fionaquigley9457 10 месяцев назад +27

The 'Hedge Schools' weren't because there was no schools infrastructure; they were due to penal laws brought in by invading English, who banned education for 'non-conformists' - which meant anyone who wasn't Anglican - usually the local population of Catholics and Presbyterian.
Great video as usual - love to see you in Northern Ireland, come back soon.

We lived in Co. Antrim & Co Down for 11 years after a hedonistic 15 yrs in London. I moved with my husband of 33yrs (now) in 1996 around the time Drumcree kicked off. The Troubles were coming to an end with result that the 6 counties and the people started to shine. It’s an amazing part of the Ireland, such incredible sights.
If you get a chance do the Antrim coast and take a drive to Carnlough, while there a walk up to the falls and the old mine works in the hills is simple spectacular. I miss the North very much.
We now live in Tipperary with our pack of hounds.
Ireland is an amazing county, so amazing in fact I realised a couple of months ago that nagging ‘thing’ in the back of my head about one day returning to Blighty had finally gone!

Hi Ladies, great video this week.
The drone footage was "STUNNING" and and I enjoyed the fun facts.
It was good to see Belfast although it brought back good and bad memories for me when I was there in the 70's.
I think the thing to remember with your ongoing house purchase is that in Ireland things get done EVENTUALLY.
Enjoy your time back in the England and hopefully will continue to share your journey in 2024.

I love watching you guys! I’m from Oklahoma in the US. Small town. We are planning to start traveling in 3 years. I’m a hospice nurse, so I’ll travel nurse. But we are traveling to heal, and find maybe where to start over. We are currently stuck where we are due too custody and my stepson having to stay in his current school district. He’s 15 now so we have 3 years. My husband ex has made life so incredibly hard for us that it’s been advised by lawyers, therapist and judges that once he turns 18 we move, and consider seriously consider changing our names. She is a malignant narcissist, and all I do is watch you two now and plan for our departure in 3 years. I rewatch old episodes, because I just love how genuine you both are.

Great episode again Louise and Emily. If I may make a suggestion while you wait for the results of the house survey... don't be put off the purchase even if the survey seems negative and is recommending a new roof. Assuming it's a bog standard, traditional Irish cottage those A frame roofs are usually 'a piece of piss' to erect in a couple of days. The benefits would add greatly to your comfort not to mention eventual resale value. Also don't forget there are people out there willing to help. Have you come across the Irish word.. meitheal?

If ever you get a chance to stay in a lighthouse, do it. We stayed at the the Corsewall Lighthouse Hotel Stranraer many years ago. It was fabulous, very classy, expensive but worth it. Hope the roof is OK. If you do have to replace it, take comfort in that it should be secure and waterproof for many years. Plaster board has to be removed. You'll probably become first class at pointing stone walls.

I'm biased but for anyone wanting to get away from it all I think we have the most beautiful county in Ireland and not far from my home town where you can easily buy all your provisions.
And of course it's much cheaper than the Republic much as I love it (unfortunately the reason it's cheaper here is in that the average wage is so much lower than the South where they need every cent to survive).

Ahh Tollymore, where the river Shimna flows through the Silurian Shales of Mourne Country in Co. Down. Little wonder the Chronicles of Narnia were based on these landscapes. Truly magnificent.

That was a beautiful coastline cliff/cave walk. Obviously Emily gave her super intuitive facts that help the narrative along!! And the van looks super good all clean, until the next rain that is. Looking forward to getting a more in depth cottage renovation video even a first night's sleep in the new home would be awesome. Have a blessed day ladies and as always stay safe! Much love and respect!!

I'm on pins and needles, too, and I'm not the one buying! Sooo excited for you and looking forward to everything coming up! Every time I watch your videos, I get excited to start my nomad life, and once I retire, I'm heading to Europe to explore everything there! Thank you again for sharing your life with us! 😊❤

hope all your dreams come true! Remember that even if it's bad news, it usually will end up with better news in the end. (I've moved across the pond 3 times - What seemed like terrible news put us where we were supposed to end up each time.) Anyway, if you're looking for good video on rock buildings, plastering, lime washing, etc. Make Do Grow is very watchable and full of good help. Thanks for sharing your journey with us.

Top Tip. Wash vehicles on.a wet day. Wet dirt falls off better and rinsing may not be required

Wow! Overwhelmed by that vlog. Gorgeous walks bith woods and coast.... Emily cooking, fun facts and food dance. ... Summer and AJ... Gripping house details though I do feel safe that Lou has got that one. Just wondering though if Em can have one minute more added on 2 minute tour? She gives such great value and packs in so much information, her little legs are wearing out. Thank you for the free subscription and like button. I am taking full advantage this week. 😂

You always manage to find really quiet places 😊.
Since I’ve been watching your Ireland videos (which I haven’t been to before) I’m definitely planning to head over. Our little collie isn’t great with other dogs sometimes so am always looking for quieter places to take her adventuring. Ireland out of season looks to be a winner 👍
Awesome video guys, thank you x
