Gerard Landry independent service is basically for inspection. The elevator won't respond to calls but can still be operated from the COP by pressing your floor button and holding the door close button until the door is closed. Basically it is like fire service.
I know why the safety door sensors are disabled; the sensors know no difference between smoke or a person as they both give off IR. And if smoke comes through the door it will refuse to close which is really dangerous so it disables it to stop the risk
On elevators that are connected to the building's fire alarm system, bypass resets the fire condition on the fire alarm control panel. This is usually only used if a smoke detector was tripped, the elevator went into fire service, and it needed a reset. Basically, bypass just turns it off if it was activated automatically.
Interesting, I don't think that's allowed where I live. Here, the fire department doesn't reset fire alarm panels and only someone responsible for the building can reset it.
@DieselDucy Andrew, that buzzer was very noisy, but it’s also cool. The cat was very cute in the ending of the video. The cat’s name I assume is Tigger. He was trying to bite your hand when you were petting him.

@agentz100 its a key you can open the outside door with when the elevator is not there. its bad because someone could come along, open it and fall down the shaft.... not real pretty...
Security allows you to bypass floor restrictions, while independent service allows you to take control of the elevator (disable hall calls, no ADA door close buttons)
@@Ih8kone Some fire alarm panels (2015-present) now have the ability to dispatch the fire department (73% of those panels that can dispatch FD are from Kidde; 18% are from ADT; 9% are from independent companies).
I also heard the reason elevator's should not be used in fires was when they had the heat-sensitive buttons. Fires would trigger the elevator to an engulfed floor, causing the rider to become trapped (elevator always on call).
Even with regular buttons a burned wire could short and trigger the elevator to stop there. There are other hazards as well. Firstly, the fire might burn up the power cables and cause it to get stuck. Secondly, if the fire is relatively close to the elevator, moving it past the fire floor could create a draft that helps the fire spread faster from where it is.
That is true, but there are other scenarios where the benefits outweighs the risks. Many fire services respond in conjunction with ambulances in medical emergencies where there is no fire. This is helpful especially in a tall building with constantly busy elevators used by tenants and visitors.
The one on the left is "independent service" (disables communication from car to elevator control station). The other switch is "security" (most elevators do not have this switch (due to increased risk of unauthorized manipulation of the switch); that switch bypasses all floor restrictions.
The elevator functions differently in fire service than any other mode. Such as having to hold the door open and close buttons and the safety strip disabled.
Did you know that Comfort Inns have to be less than 20 years old? If it's more than 20 years old, it has to be called something else (like a Quality Inn).
The "door open" and "door close" buttons allow the user to manuver the elevator doors (most have "door close" disabled when in service). The other buttons below the door manuvering buttons are "alarm" (only to be used in emergency situations (since some can dispatch the fire department when the button is pushed)) and the "phone/help" button (also to be used in emergency situations).
It depends on exactly why it is stuck. If it's stuck due to a bad door sensor preventing the door from closing, then yes, because it ignores a door sensor in fire service. If its stuck due to another fault then it probably won't do anything. I'm not a firefighter, but I believe that if they try to recall an elevator and it doesn't come, they are supposed to go to the floor it's on to make sure no one is trapped.
Thanks for this video, I'm taking the FSD test in a few days and it was nice to get a visual on everything . Appreciate it.
On Westinghouse Phase II Fire Service key switch (car switch) doesn't have a HOLD mode. Just ON and OFF. There's also no call cancel button.
The cat is an awesome bonus feature for this video :)
This is a very nice and informative demo. I have never done fire service before, only independent service.

So true!!
Doctor Octagonapus I agree, the buzzer thingy is absolutely ridicules. The buzzer should only go off when the door closes.

The fire service instructions indicate that the elevator gets sent back to recall floor when switched to "off" (car recall station).
What happens when someone shuts off the recall switch while the car is still in Phase 2?
the elevator will stop immediately (even mid floor)
So what happens when the fire gets in the elevator and the firemen gets stuck then he dies
That's why they would check the areas near the elevator doors, on each floor, before they tried to use it. Also what CoolArrived said as well.
The fire service relay reset the smoke detector by hitting the bypass switch. unless there is still smoke near the detector.
If you press call cancel while traveling between floors, will you stop in between floors or continue up to your floor?
It keeps going to selected floors.

what are the extra switches below the door buttons?
The "door open" and "door close" buttons allow the user to manuver the elevator doors (most have "door close" disabled when in service). The other buttons below the door manuvering buttons are "alarm" (only to be used in emergency situations (since some can dispatch the fire department when the button is pushed)) and the "phone/help" button (also to be used in emergency situations).
The stop switch allows the user to toggle service on the elevator ("stop" = "disabled (out of service)"; "run" = "enabled (in service)"
can the elevator recall even if its stuck?
It depends on exactly why it is stuck. If it's stuck due to a bad door sensor preventing the door from closing, then yes, because it ignores a door sensor in fire service. If its stuck due to another fault then it probably won't do anything.
I'm not a firefighter, but I believe that if they try to recall an elevator and it doesn't come, they are supposed to go to the floor it's on to make sure no one is trapped.
