Born, raised and lived in Palmy until I turned 23. No regrets moving away, but it is refreshing to see my hometown on display from an outsider's perspective.
American here, from Chicago. I’ve visited Palmy on several occasions and have zero complaints. The parks were wonderful, Esplanade and more. Walking the river and more. Exploring the gorge and gorge walk. Plenty of places to dine and eat well. The square and city centre were also great. Went shopping and to the movie theater at The Plaza, as well the food court. Was never board, had great times, made great memories and would definitely visit again.
I moved to the Manawatu from Wellington, have never regretted it, will admit the first time I went to Palmy I was a bit meh, but now I love it, great wee city, heaps of restaurants and cafes, stunning outdoor life - mountains, beaches, bush….all close by and so easy to travel to other regions.
lololol, that's sooo cool. 11:32 that dairy which you didnt film, but I could see it thru the lens - was my very first job i had when i left school lolol. Used to be called Trenton Dairy in 1981. Yes, i was born in Palmy. Migrated to Queensland Brisbane 1986, been here eversince. Wow, thanks for this. Good job.
New Zealand looks fantastic. I can't wait to visit. It's also nice to see the Malls there doing well compared to the Malls here in the US. Great video as always.
On the South Island of New Zealand travel down the West Coast. That was the best thing I ever done. Just did a month ago. When I save up again, I'm going back up it and im going to appreciate it this time.
Not every mall buddy . NZs economy is not that flash at present. Just like everywhere else however , come here whenever you want. You're more than welcome well do our utmost to ensure you have the time of your life

I’ve never understood why Palmy copped so much negativity, it’s a well planned city with everything you could need aside from a beach, but Himitangi Beach is only 30 minutes away. Fish Town (which briefly appeared in this video) used to have the best fish and chip shop spring rolls I have ever had, haven’t been back in years though so I’m not sure if they’re still awesome
I agree. My son, daughter in law and grandchildren live there. I love visiting there for holidays, and I'm glad my mokos are being raised there. ❤️ 🌿 🙆🏻♀️ 😊 👍🏽
finally some real insight, not just recycling palmy-insults. I've just applied for a job in Palmerston, wanting to move the family there. good place for a young family to start in NZ?
We came here from Auckland for a short stay in 1979 and never left. It is a great place to raise a family, good schools, well serviced, and we seem to miss most of the exstreme weather. We visit Auckland to see relatives and can not wait to leave, what a mess, at least we can move around our city.
So cool to see you visited where I live. I love Palmy. As I’ve said prior would be so cool to see you visit my hometown of Levin. I know it’s not a major city, only a small town but well worth the visit. Especially RJ’s Licorice factory
Hey curls a pity you never zapped across to the small town of Fielding, about 15mins away, a lovely little town. But beware they shut shops at 12 noon on a Saturday 😊 I lived there for 6 years, the people are so friendly too. Also you need to go to Gissy (Gisborne) my home town, life on the east coast is sure different, good beaches, yummy fish & chips etc.
Thanks for pointing out the UK shop in Palmy. My wife is British so we'll be going for a drive there from Porirua. I believe there's a similar shop in Petone.
Every time I have been in Palmy: rain and *windy*. How windy? I got wind burn just walking around the Square. There are some interesting shops... the thing is, *there is nothing to do there apart from look at shops*. Once you've done that... that's it. Palmy's main purpose was as a university town and as a stop on the main trunk railway. You can still catch a train from there going North or South. One train a day! LOL
Taste of the UK 🇬🇧 is in the suburb of Milson. Next time you visit Palmy go to the Esplanade, it's really cool! Also Memorial Park. My son, daughter in law and grandchildren live there and I love visiting for holidays. ❤️ 😊 🌿 🙆🏻♀️ 👍🏽
driving in palmy with one way roads it feels like all roads lead back to the square. people might use the term boring as it doesn't have any tourism feature like sky tower or a steam boat but it is a great city with my favourite motel
I know what you mean about being missing the accents of home. When I returned home from some time in Europe and the UK I just wanted to hear "Yeah. Na". I wasn't disappointed. After getting a cheery "Welcome home" from customs I went to the first cafe for a coffee and it was full of workers all saying "Yeah. Nah." for all they were worth in a good old kiwi way. I felt SO at home!
Curls on my stomping ground. Didn't bump into you. Maybe next time. Pleased you found Palmy fun. I'm going to try a slice of Tony's pizza tomorrow on your recommendation.
I love Palmy! Thanks for bringing back some memories. I went to Girls’ High in 1997 as a high school exchange student (I’m from California), and then Massey in 2001. I go back every so often. Amazing how much the Plaza has changed over the years. Good that Cafe Cuba has survived the decades. And all the great cafes on George St. Did you check out the Library? It was my favorite place.
Love your content Curls. Would be awesome if you came to Napier which I swear is different again in a good way, very picturesque and better thanviur neighboring city Hastings lol
Every Christmas there was a guy who used to do up his house like Santa's workshop and open it up to the public and the kids would get free presents he was dressed up like Santa sadly he died a few years ago im not sure if anyone else has picked up the torch I took our Daughter a few Christmases
I know the owners of tastes of the UK! I went to school with her children! Absolutely lovely people, and love popping into get my smoky bacon chips and bon bons!!
It’s just one of those places that’ll always get ragged on for a laugh whether it’s true or not, I’m from Christchurch and we always make fun of Timaru (among other places), went there for a weekend and it was absolutely lovely.
Either Palmy or Hamilton. Spoilt for choice? Whole of NZ is awesome 👋😀 from Tauranga. If you in the neighbourhood, let me know and I can take you for a walk around Greerton or Mauao.
lived there for a year only saw countdown paknsave the mall and the square nothing ever happened but a lot of uni parties but i wasnt invited my ex was

I live in Whanganui and everyone here calls palmy a shit hole. Its because it has no character, flat and filled with bogans. Its great for shopping, but other than that its average.
Go back in the summer, there's a great swimming pool with a couple cool waterslides. And the Rugby Museum, can't believe you didn't check out the rugby museum
OMG that UK shop is the BEST, we live in Taupo and the lovely lady at that UK shop sends my mum a box of XXX mints whenever she runs out. Nicest lady ever. (we do of course pay for them 😅) best UK shop I've seen in NZ in ages tho
My cuzzy laughed at you going back for a 2nd look of her in plaza. Ive been here 20 years and its grown since the dump was renamed Mount Cleese after he called it the suicidal capital of the world hehe. For me being flat and a million paths its the escooter capital of NZ Good all round accurate views dude and some I hadnt thought of so 🏆🏆
i currently live in palmy and i personally don't hate it but i will admit it is kinda boring that's why i am planning to move to a different city or country for a better life :)
Recommend the person who wanna come to Palmy and like music to visit the Snail and the Stomach. Enjoy the Swamp music from local amazing band. And there are many cool artists here.

there is loads of great walks in the area, esplanade, great swimming pool.
LOL, Curls, loved your accent after your visit to Pommy shop 🤣
The whole video had me enchanted - thanks again 😀

You've been to more places then ive been curls, cut it out...🤟🏾😁💯 let's roll...
People forget that Palmy is a University town. And uni students aren’t exactly boring!
To be honest, I literally forgot Palmerston north existed for a year lol
Hmm, i always thought Huntly was at the top, followed by Wanganui and then Hamilton.
Oh gosh, I guessed it before you said it. Its just so flat and suburban. It has no character but there's nothing wrong with it.
Same as Hamilton it's not as bad as you have been told
Hamilton is best city re location. 1 hr drive to Mount Maunganui, 1hr to Raglan, 1 hr to Auckland and an hour to Rotorua or Taupo…love that
@@HeeniKekeRaglan is a very interesting place and so is Kawhia.
Grew up in and around Palmy, would move back there without hesitation if it didn't mean uprooting kids from their schools.
Its a Uni Student City too - a go to for horticultural training etc.
Palmy...............and that's it 😂😂😂
Seki a Palmy 😂😂😂
Palmy seems fine to me. Open, spacious no problems

I'm surprised that K-Mart still exists even though they went bankrupt back in the 1990s and 2000s.
