    It is time for the newest instalment in that beloved cinematic automotive RUclips experience where we film practical cars that can be bought for less than £1,000 in a manner befitting of their inexpensive value! This may go horribly wrong (and frequently does)...
    This time, as we test a 2005 Volkswagen Polo 9N 1.4 Twist, we find a slightly strange electric window switch, talk about Amazon deliveries, find quite a satisfying set of heating and ventilation controls, get excited about four cylinders and 75 bhp and drone on about very little of any importance at all. Nothing untoward, then...

    My brother had one of these as his first car a good few years ago, albeit the 1.2 version. He thought it was very good starter car - reliable, cheap to run and easy to drive🙂

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  2 года назад

      Yes, you could much worse than one of these, or indeed a Mark I Fabia or Mark III Ibiza, as a first car. Very good parts availability, decent quality interiors for the time, and low running costs for a lot of the models, do make these a good choice in that respect.

    Lovely to see my car reviewed on the channel! Hope you enjoyed driving it as much as I do, I love my three door Twist! I’ve never seen another Twist on the road.
    Snoopy likes to sit there and keep me company :)
    Thanks :)

      No, thank you, Jess! My twin sister (also called Jess, strangely enough) had a 1998 Polo as our first car, so it's a very strong tradition indeed. Your car is in lovely condition, the Twist Special Edition was more common on the Mark II Polo, I think, as my uncle had one in the 1990s. Snoopy did look very comfortable on the dashboard!

    My wife has one of these - albeit a 2002 1.2 model. She uses it as a van - we nicknamed it ‘the wheelbarrow’. It’s just clicked over 113k mikes, and it’s still going strong. It’s a good, honest and durable little car. Surprisingly good fun to drive too.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  2 года назад

      I have driven the 54 bhp and 65 bhp versions of the three cylinder, and the 1.4 is definitely better, but if you don't do lots of out of town driving, the 1.2 is probably OK. 113,000 miles is pretty good!

    Still driving a 9n5 1.2L 64hp 2003 in 2024. Love the car, a bit underpowered, especially with AC on but is quite comfortable. Only have 77k km on the clock and apart from some interior wear and tear (upholstery needs changing and strip of plastic at the front of the dash has cracked due to the hot temperatures in Malta) it's still pretty pristine.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting

      Oh gosh, the 64 bhp models are better than the 54 bhp ones, but they are still very slow. 77,000 km is nothing. Would love to visit Malta one day, thank you very much indeed once again for watching!

    Looks immaculate!! These cars bring back lots of memories from mates who had these as their first cars (very similar to my Lupo which had the same 1.4 as this). Also big up to Warton Hall Garage (on the number plates, based about half an hour from Grange) as they've looked after my cars very well for a number of years now.

    Had a similar Polo (but a 1.2 on an 02 plate) in the family for many years from new. It still lives locally and remains in fantastic condition (looks like a 2yr old car rather than a 20yr old car). A very basic but very durable little motor.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  2 года назад +2

      Yes, you do see plenty of these still around, both pre-facelift and post-facelift. We spotted another 9N on a 2002 plate in Grange-over-Sands in purple, with a beige leather interior, during the time of filming. We suspect that it was an SE model with a huge number of options.

    An elderly former work colleague of mine had a Polo of this generation in the early 2000's. I liked the round headlamps much better than the facelift as it was distinctive and gave brand identity along with the similar face of the Lupo.
    This gem polo looked so grown up and was probably one of the classier options in the segment. A car for people who wanted no nonsense, just motoring done right.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  2 года назад +2

      It has been a surprisingly nostalgic car for many people on the channel for some reason. Very much a no nonsense car, very much suitable for a new driver, which is what my sister and I were 21 years ago.

  • @David_H-73

    Jessica car is in very could condition ( I do help on that front). I quite like the round front lights, it certainly makes it distinctive. The build quality is very impressive for a small car with heavyweight bodywork ,soft plastics and rubber mats everywhere. Just the 'sticky' rubber coated hard plastic that let's the side down!

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  2 года назад +1

    I had the 6n2 polo, it had a mysteriously flooded panel which I could never find the entrance to, so drilled a hole so it could drain. It also had a phantom multiple cylinder misfire which I could never find the fault of. Sold it a few months ago. It was the 8v 1.4 and I have no idea how they got such little power (60)bhp! From a 1.4 MPI
    I've gotta say I really do like the 3 door look (my 6n2 was a 3dr too)

      We are hoping to get a Mark III (6N pre-facelift) on the channel soon, as I do know someone with one. It also has that 1.4 with 60 bhp, as did my first car, which was also a pre-facelift Mark III. The three door does indeed suit this shape very well.

    I drive one of these, and have done for a couple of years now, thankfully it's the facelift model (9N3) and not one with the bug-eyed headlamps. I assume mine is a base model 1.2 as I only have a rear window heater button, not much else. Very easy car to drive, nothing special but it suits me for what I need at the moment. But they must be popular and reliable because I can blend into just about anywhere, they're as common as muck out on the roads wherever I go, even more than the more recent models it seems, although that might just be my biased vision there.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  Год назад +2

      Yes, still tonnes of these around, and the Polo these days is, if anything, even more popular as it is the best-selling car of last month. I have driven a base model facelifted Polo 1.2 of this generation, and as long as you avoid the motorways, it is OK. Thank you ever so much indeed for watching and commenting!

    The 9N Polo was a little more distinctive than its predecessor with its cute little face and the taillights that mirror those on its bigger sibling the Passat, which is no bad thing as the contemporary Passat was a top quality product stealing sales from more premium German Makes.
    The mid 2000s was a very high point in Supermini circles with this Polo, the Mk6 Fiesta, Corsa, Clio, Yaris, Fabia, Swift, Getz. All of them excellent all rounders.
    Oh dear, I almost forgot the Rover 25. More a Megamini than a Supermini but another excellent all rounder.

      Oh yes, I am sure they would have sold millions if they had produced a version of the 9N Polo with fins and chrome, sir! Mind you, they did already have a retro car at the time with the Beetle, so perhaps they didn't need two in the same range?

    Badges tailgate slightly high. Twist had a tickle of paint. The 1.4 wheezy 3 cyl fuel type cannot discuss lurches when driven. Totally horrid drive. . May I make a comment. The 1.9 of which fuel type omitted in GT spec 130 horse PS was basically a 1.9 VRS Fabia. That was a Bobby dazzler or a car. Rare and a sweet heart to drive. For once when a certain fuel type made the car drive ace. MK4 Golf same as Red i. 150 and 130. Good as an oil burner. Of the 1.8 GTi was better. And the 225 Cupra Leon same engine was quality. The Polo was good with the 1.9 and so few sold
