A few other ways to meet people while traveling solo is to sign up for a walking tour, or a photography tour, or join a local class (cooking, art, local history, etc. usually only a couple of hours), I try to join a walking tour on my first full day in a new city as a way to get my bearings, learn about the local area, and meet people. There's also a website called Eat With where you can meet locals who cook lunch/dinner or teach you how to make a local dish. These events can also include others so it's a nice way to meet people and share a meal. BTW thanks again for sharing equipment info!

And couldn't agree more about cooking classes! One of the best experiences I've had was learning to cook with local chefs, shopping at the food market, meet lovely people, and enjoying a tasty meal and drinks together.
