@GirlPainting Alexandra, you have done so much for this community on youtube, you have increased the quality of everyones painting by your generosity in sharing the techniques you have learned. It's the least I could do to help repay what you have done for all of us. Cat
From my Da Waaugh comment; Awesome tutorial man, I watched it from start to finish. I have yet to base any of my orks, and your use of cork was very inspiring, and more than enough of an excuse to go buy some wine to sip while painting. The use of resin as ice was killer. All in all its an amazing tutorial, easily bookmarked for later reference, and there's nothing like seeing someone work on something (in high def) to really bring the technique to life.
ive seen many people do this technique and make it look rreeeeeeally risky, but the way you use sanding + gloss varnish + scoring the resin for a realistic finish gives me a very good bit of confidence to experiment
Tip: you could have coated the paper cup with a barrier of that packing tape before taping it to the base. The tape would have prevented the paper from being an issue while still leaving it flexible enough to work. source: years of working with resin. ;)
I never really thought about bases being a source of creativity , or even important for that matter , but now i feel pretty inspired mini girl! Thank you. You are now a new favorite.
Great tutorial. For a more thick/solid looking ice though you could either use a brighter more greyish blue under the ice or mix in a bit of white in the resin.
Now that makes me want to move my PC, minis, paints, and all basing material in the shop and lock myself in until I try this and the glowing rune effects :D...Really great tutorial...hope we have the resin or something comparable here in the lower 48...Great stuff, buddy...Jim.
That looks absolutely beautiful and gives me ideas in implementing similar techniques or parts of them in my own bases. Thank you so much for all your great guides, they are really, really helpful!
This is one hell of a great tutorial man! I definitively need to grab some clear resin, I need to make some water/ice terrains, it is vibrating in my head:P How much time you have to pour it?
This is F'ing amazing Cat!!! I have got to try this some time. Looks like a trip to the hobby & crafts store in my near future to find some of this resin. Thanks for the Tutorial man!
Do you reckon this would work with liquid water-style products, like GW's water in a tube style products? Cause I'm not sure I'd be able to get a hold of that resin over this side of the pond Many thanks for an awesome tutorial!
Fantastic work I was wondering what would happen if you added a pigment to the resin such as a ink? and how it would look with some glowing runes carved and painted into it
must say my good sir - a)thank god I found they ship that stuff to the UK and b)that is brilliant - not sure I'd do it for a large force but you've given me an immense idea - Black Templar Emperor's Champ but Sword in the Ice job :D Splendid!
Love it! I was going to try an underwater diorama of marine versus hormagaunt, with the gaunts swimming like the aliens in, funnily enough, Aliens, you think doing this on a large enough scale would leave it clear enough to see details? Also bolter round contrails, I was thinking a twisted tube of cling film would maybe give the effect of gasses under water, what do you think?
Preach brother, I stopped when I realized I was spending way too much time and not getting nearly enough money for other peoples armies. BUT if you have a team set up its all good.
Doks Office Studios True. The amazing skills, knowledge and passion that goes into painting something really good, is rarely acknowledged in money. I would pay more if i was wealthy. But since i don't play Warhammer (due to greenskin bad dice) i would just collect the figures in minilandscapes.
fun fact you already primed black so hust dry brush the gold save you the rest of the step, itll add patina and highlight. Also no need for shot glass and tape tape works fine and produces a clear outside, with light polish.
Awesome video cat. Thanks so much for putting this up. It's a lot of work but dam effective. I can see myself doing something similar at some stage for a special project.
This is awesome! I know you made it a long time ago but I’m gonna be trying this soon! I’ve never done a base period lol. I’m setting my expectations high! Wish me luck haha!
Awesome vid dude, I am gonna try it right away lol. Also, I think a mask should be used when sanding any resin as the dust particles might get lodged in your lungs and cause troubles to say the least.
wow, just amazing. I'm pretty sure I'm going to remount all my wolves on ice bases... have you tried using the "realistic water" product from woodland scenics? I'm curious how that would work in this type of base.
Thanks for the tip, I'm gonna try to get all my Crisis suits on my "Ice World" tau something like this. Do you know if the Resin can be Dyed at all? I have a great Blue ink I use for water/ ice when I'm making terrain.
@m0o0oeh Thanks for the comment. I tried using "water effects" from woodlands scenics and it failed miserably. I do know that you can buy the resin in the UK, so because I have never used GW's line, I really can't comment. If you want to do a bunch of bases for an army, I would suggest getting this style of resin. Cat
To make the cracks and scratches seem like they have more depth... Do you think a thinned down (maybe) Asurmen Blue wash would work? Probably not over the whole base but just targeting those deep gouges etc.
Also, in case anyone watches this and wants to try this, what we do with resins is we wax the surface of the mold. In this case, wax the inside of the plastic cup (if you intend to use it again, especially). Otherwise, it will be rough to peel the resin away from the plastic when it hardens.
@HQBunker Hey dude, thanks for the comment! This didnt work like a resin where it hardens within 5 minutes, this more took about 12 hours to firm up..... So it is not a rush to pour it in. Cheers!
@darkdrgon2136 Hey Dude, I can't see you couldnt add an ink or drop of paint? I would try a few small test patches first to see how it looks. The other thing I thought of doing, was do the ice in two different layers, and scratch the 1st layer as I did in the video, then pour the finish top coat over top and scratch it as well. It would look as though the ice is cracked through, not just on the surface....
@TheRider2012 Hey dude, I certainly think this resin would be clear enough to show details, it essentially is "crystal clear". That is quite ingenious of you regarding the cling film. I would want to try that effect on a smaller scale to see how it looks first, but it certainly sounds promising! PLEASE if you do this, share your results, I would love to see it~! Cat
@999rubicon The bases were about an hour and a half from start to finish.... The Njal figure was about 14 hours I believe.... Cheers and thanks for the comments! Cat
@weird544554 Thanks for the kind comments~! If you do use the idea I would love to see your results! Please let me know if and where I can see how you did, Cat

Thanks for the shout, that caught me by surprise! What an amazing tutorial and fantastic results. The bases showcase those wolves expertly.
I would try to add a dash of white paint to the final stir and then pour the resin to create whispy smokelike shadows in the ice.
squidgybidge, is right. This is one of the best tutorials on YT. The ice bases look really good, I can see loads of people trying this.
Great tutorial.

I finally found a store that sels the clear resin and will be using it for my new space wolf army soon. thank you very much for this great tutorial.
That looks absolutely beautiful and gives me ideas in implementing similar techniques or parts of them in my own bases. Thank you so much for all your great guides, they are really, really helpful!
The best basing tutorial on the internet
I've never seen anything quite like this. Thank you so much! What a great tutorial on something fresh and new
I would love if the Chaos Dwarf holding the head would have one of these bases, that would be so awesome!!! These are beautiful bases Cat!!!
When it's sandpapered it looks so real. Favourited!
Best winter effect base idea ever!!!
Awesome effect I must try this! Thanks for the inspiration can't wait to see what it looks like.
Wargaming community on youtube is truley a beautiful thing.

Thanks for the tutorial.
Lol at you almost dipping your brush with glue in the snow ;-) Awesome vid Catt your work is truely amazing as always!
Fantastic work

If i could paint like that, i would make a living of it. Pro-painted Warhammer figures sells for ALOT.
no they dont, not in comparison to the work that goes into them.
Preach brother, I stopped when I realized I was spending way too much time and not getting nearly enough money for other peoples armies. BUT if you have a team set up its all good.

I applaud you for the work of ediing. Brilliant tutorial and very well recorded
Fantastic vid, I'll have to have a go at this. Thanks for sharing.

thank you!! i feel that this would make a space wolve army look amazing!
neat tutorial end result looks great will try out this effect in the future :)
Love it. First time viewer. I'm going to try some of these bases for my snow troopers in Star Wars Legion.
What do you think to maybe adding a paint/colour to the resin to create a more "dirty" realistic finish? Those bases looked excellent great idea!
Awesome vid dude, I am gonna try it right away lol. Also, I think a mask should be used when sanding any resin as the dust particles might get lodged in your lungs and cause troubles to say the least.
outstanding! I really want to build a new army just to try this out !
Thanks, it takes a ton of time!
That's a pretty badass base
Great video, the effort put into editing isn't lost on me :) thanks
This is great stuff bro :) good luck in contest
excellent tutorial Cat, it gave me an Idea to make beach bases for some pirate minis ;)

The shotglass dam is an awesome idea. I work with resins a lot, so this shouldn't be that hard to do.
To make the cracks and scratches seem like they have more depth... Do you think a thinned down (maybe) Asurmen Blue wash would work? Probably not over the whole base but just targeting those deep gouges etc.
That is so cool! Great video!
Awesome tutorial buddy! The results are spectacular.

Great vid Cat, very helpful!

Hi just wondering if the cork you used was just regular old cork from a wine bottle?
yep, enjoy the wine, and enjoy creating :)
Wow!! Great job man. I'm def going to.use this, just need to figure a method for square bases.
truly awesome work subed straight away!!!!!!
Hopefully you did not loose any braincells from the poisonous fumes. Great turitorial and great bases.
@999rubicon The bases were about an hour and a half from start to finish.... The Njal figure was about 14 hours I believe.... Cheers and thanks for the comments!
