It’s a microcosm of everything Sibelian. Yes, gotta love it!

Exactly my reaction. It's unmistakeable, virtually from the first note. No one but Sibelius could have composed this.

I like the Scéne Historiques. How can anyone not? I haven’t got them in my collection but I must make recompense.

King Kristian II Suite is simply awesome. It contains some of the most beautiful music Sibelius made. I recommend it.

I really like this Interesting Overture concept, I should check out the earlier ones. As you know, Weber has some absolutely marvelous short overtures as well (e.g. Abu Hassan), I'd love to hear you discuss them someday.

Both Scenes historiques suites are shamefully unknown. The All'Overture and Festivo from Suite One and The Chase and At the Drawbridge from Suite Two are all outstanding Sibelius. Why the Festivo in particular isn't one of his most popular lighter pieces is something of a mystery. I really think if he had eliminated the Scena from Suite One and collapsed the rest of them into a single 30-minute suite it would be a lot more popular than it is. Try playing this piece in this order next time you hear it:
    1. Suite No. 1, Op. 25 - 1. All'Overtura
    2. Suite No. 2, Op. 66 - 3. At the Drawbridge
    3. Suite No. 2, Op. 66 - 1. The Chase- Overture
    4. Suite No. 2, Op. 66 - 2. Love Song
    5. Suite No. 1, Op. 25 - 3. Festivo
*It plays a lot better this way, doesn't it? The Scena always felt like bombastic filler to me, anyway. It's better music than the King Christian II Suite, which gets played a lot more, it seems.

1001 Videos (so far so damn good), a Dave Hurwitz Odyssey, also sprach Subscriber-astra! Congratulations on this most Historical day! What a scene! You look like a snowman. And what a splendid overture you've chosen for us to begin the next thousand vids... And yes, where is the rest of the world? Maybe it doesn't really exist, maybe it's only a demographic illusion, who knows? We might only be 12K after all. We've been tricked by the Baxians

There's so much overlooked music that's rarely (if ever) performed and often difficult to find recorded. Here are six delightful and tuneful overtures that, in my opinion, don't deserve neglect.
    Arriaga: Los Esclavos felices
    Balfe: Bohemian Girl
    Chapi: La Revoltosa
    Flotow: Alessandro Stradella
    Gomes: Il Gurany
    Suk: Under the Apple Tree

What a gem! Thank you for discussing this overture. I've never listened to it, and yet a search reveals two recordings in my library (Jarvi and Barbirolli)! I'm a little surprised that Segerstam didn't include it in his recent cycle of incidental music.

Congratulations on both your 1000th and 1001st videos! A great way to have spent nearly an hour listening to you discuss works of one of my favorite composers! I’ll have to now put the N. Jarvi CD with the Scenes historiques and En Saga in the player and LISTEN!👍

Have a old RCA Gold vinyl recording of the Scenes Historiques performed by the Scottish National Orchestra conducted by Alexander Gibson. Outstanding performance full of zest, sensitivity and lots of atmosphere of this great music. I don't think it ever made it to a CD release.

Wonderful start to the next 1000 videos! It is so refreshing to hear quality music from a great composer that hasn't been done to death.

The next piece, Scena, is even more impressive. Also typically Sibelius, and one-of-a-kind.... They were all recycled in 1911 from the Press Celebrations Music of 1899, to which Finlandia also belonged.

The Karelia music had/has an overture which I read was once more popular than the suite. I have an ancient copy of it on vinyl from the 1960s. It sounds fine -like an overture.

Hello, Dave, from one of your 'faithful' in New Zealand. Nice to see you occasionally put a word in for our New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. Thanks!

Congratulations on 1000+ videos. The Ruslan and Ludmila overture I always liked. The timpani and string part always interested me. Another thing is, as a classical music listener, maybe you could discuss what rubato is, etc. and those other obscure musical terms (tried to Google them). Maybe you have a book recommendation. Thanks.

Beecham also performed and recorded this music.

The Karelia Suite gets played a lot because Karajan recorded it at one point, which must make it a major work, no? After all, it was conferred with the official imprimatur of importance by the general music director of Europe. (Having said that, I personally also find it more engaging than this piece, though some of that could be due to familiarity.)
