I'm sharing this video as I thought it might be of interest to see the unedited shot. When I am throwing, I spend a lot of time cleaning my hands and this and other pauses are usually edited from my tutorial videos. I definitely want clean hands when I switch from pulling to the shaping stage with ribs. I find that I have a lot more control if I have dry hands and a dry, clean tool.
For making wide bowls, I also make the pulls more vertical, at about a 45 degree angle, and then I use ribs to make repeated passes in order to lower the walls and make the bowl wider.
