  • In the fourth episode of Dear Dr. Fantasy, I chat with the amazing ‪@PetrikLeo‬, the BookTuber who reads more books in one month than most of us read in a year! We discuss how he became a reviewer on Goodreads and, later, a BookTuber. In addition, we touch on a host of our favorite fantasy and science fiction stories.

Phillip your channel is what opened the booktube warren for me! A friend had told me I should check out a series called Malazan Book of the Fallen last year. So before I dove in I decided I would see what is out there about this series, lo and behold your videos on Malazan motivated me to jump right in. I am now on Dust of Dreams and I am an avid watcher of what I call the booktube crew: Jimmy, Petrik, Mike, AP, Iskar, Johanna, et. al.
I really just watch mostly but every now and then a video like this inspires me to respond. I just wanted to thank you for rekindling my love for epic fantasy all over again! Much love!

LOTR for me is the one book that can't be beaten. I used to read it to my mom when I was a teenager and watching the movie (the one that was drawn over the actors) every year. In the "new" movies, I remember seeing the Black Gate for the first time in the movie and my heart just stopped. That was my entry to fantasy. I'll never get that "first fix" feeling again, but I've discovered other great stories after that. Thank you for this channel, Philip. These discussions are really entertaining.

There were authors who closely imitated Tolkien, for example Terry Brooks in The Sword of Shannara and Robert Jordan in The Eye of the World, but I don’t think they were that close to Tolkien’s writing style, which is different from most modern fantasy in its descriptiveness and skillful use of archaic language at times.
