You’re starting to see why we love Tool the way we do. We’ve gone from angry youth and toxic relationships, to less angry but still bitter adults, to first time parents, to losing our parents, and seeing the state of the world remain terrible, largely by choice of its inhabitants. Tool is documenting life, album by album.

Dam that's deep. I've been in love with them since high school 15 years ago. 31 now and still learning the complexities of the greatest band in history.
“You are the light, the way that they will only read about.” Again, he places Judith Marie above the divine. For in the bible there is a scripture (John 14:6) where Jesus says: “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the father except through me.” And MJK just elevated his mother to that level. LOVE it!!!!
From what I understand, some of the bitterness and resentment is to the religious community she was a part of. Supposedly they considered serious disability or illness to be a sign of God being angry with the person that suffered from it. So, when his mother got paralyzed and stuck in a wheelchair, she was ostracized and shunned by her entire religious community right at the time she could have used their support the most.
The line that hits hardest for me in this song is "Fetch me the Spirit, the Son, and the Father. Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended" before Maynard all but screams, "It's time now! My time now! Give me my! Give me my wings!"
27 years of pain relieved. Yet, as children we cant understand why it was even necessary and curse that creator for the burden of it. These songs are so powerful
They stopped playing this song live because it is so emotionally difficult for Maynard, technically difficult for the band and it wasn’t a huge hit so people would be yelling different songs for them to play. I consider myself very lucky to have seen it.
Not to mention that Maynard has regretted putting so much into these songs- said he'll never do it again...
They sat on the front of the stage following this show, a hush fell over the arena, and everyone held up lighters - it was incredibly emotional. Truly an honor to have attended.
I was ashamed when I saw them live in Kelowna, I was loving this song but he stopped halfway because a bunch of the crowd in the front didn’t get it

I cried with you man and this is far from my first time hearing this song. I mean really hearing. My Dad suffered for over 14 years before his death, never wavering in his faith while I lost mine. This song resonates right to my core. I'm so grateful for Tool and their music has helped me overcome so much strife in my life. I shudder to think of where I would be right now without them. I know I'm not alone.
When Maynard talks about ignorant siblings at the congregation, I feel like it was more resentment toward the "family" of the church. Judith was a devout christian and lived her life based on those values, despite Maynard feeling God turned his back on her.... all while others in the congregation feigned hardships they were going through - hypocrites living for themselves not actually following the path.
Right. It makes more sense that way when the line "but enough about the collective Judas..." follows.
He's also mentioned in interviews that the congregation would be sympathetic to his mother but then say behind her back that her condition was God punishing her for some sins

Everyone can (and should) have their own interpretation, I share Matt's. I think this is grieving mixed with his understanding/acceptance of his mum's faith choices and how he comes to reconcile these. As someone who has lost both my parents, this is such a moving song for me. Big love to you and Matt and all, take care xx
If no one has said, that's a coffin closing after part 1. Part one his mom is hospital death bed (cold florescent lights). Part 2 is at the funeral.
Yeah that loud transition as the moment of her death and the weaight of emotion at the realisation. It is so simple and powerful.
I’ve always likened it to the so called death rattle
I know this was posted a long time ago, but I felt the need to point out Justin Chancellor's genius bassline in this song. He actually employed classical guitar fingerstyle technique, when he normally uses a pick, to get the sound he wanted. And it is the backbone of the whole song. He DRIVES this piece the entire way, and so many people don't even notice.
Your commentary on these reactions has the kind of depth and consideration that most other channels in the category sorely lack and I so appreciate it, Skullz. Thank you for putting the time/ energy into these videos and allowing your own vulnerability to show despite how uncomfortable it may be at times. Can't wait for next Tuesday!

I can't stand reaction videos. Just people commenting "oh that sounds cool" or "oooh, this is crazy" but unless the song is something on the nose like Vicarious or Right in Two, no one really bothers to really break down the songs. I never thought I'd ever subscribe to a reaction video content maker but here we are and I find myself looking forward to every Tuesday now....

I loved how when they played this live, the projections of stormy weather on top of the fog machine smoke being cut by lasers into cross-sections and literally making clouds above the band really elevated the entire stormy beginning of the song. So fucking good.
This section:

It comes from a children’s hymn. “This little light of mine. I’m going to let it shine.”
There’s something so sweet and touching that he used lyrics from a children’s hymn…one he probably sang as a child…as part of this song. Like another small tribute to his mother.
Such tragic beauty in this song.

Liking before it’s even started
One of my favorite vocal parts of any TOOL song is when he says: "Ten thousand days in the fire is long enough;
You're going home." And it has all of layered vocal harmonies.
The shear emotional weight of this of having to perform it live in front of people floors me every damn time. I literally can’t listen to the bit with crescendo where it goes

Without the hairs on the back of my neck and goosebumps every time it’s just so earnest so raw so evocative.

And some assholes had the gall to yell out to them to play different songs while they were performing this live. People tossed bottles and things at the stage. Certain audiences wanted the "hardcore" TOOL - the Undertow and Aenima stuff- they didn't understand this was a piece of Maynard's actual heart that he was extending to them. It wounded him really deeply that he got these kinds of reactions from people. He has said that he really kind of regrets even putting these two songs out there. It became too difficult for him emotionally to expose his soft underbelly like that over and over, only to have it not understood for the gift it was. They will likely never perform these two songs live again...and it's a damn shame.

Have strong opinions about what music people should make wonderful start a band. Some people just really suck. Like you said better didn’t even realize the gift he was giving them the piece of himself he shared with them.
When he chants, “Give me my Give me my Give me my Give me my Give me my” it’s like I’m holding my breath…
Then on “…wiiiiiings” it’s like her wings are received and spreading, and I can finally breathe as she takes flight.

It's a tough ride for empathetic people. And the real eulogy in the discography. The most amazing tribute and gift.
When you are having a tough time emotionally, it's a helpful song to feel like you are sharing what burdens you due to it's honesty. You cry, Adams guitar cries and the goosebumps rise while the tears flow.
Sharing grief and pain is cleansing, and the beauty in the score drags you from the bottom and starts you on your way back again.
First time I ever heard this, I sat frozen in stunned silence. When he sings: “I only pray heaven knows when to lift you out”, I lost my mind. I just instantly burst into tears. Absolutely stunning.
I saw them first in 93 as angry teen. I sit now nearly 48 as divorced and remarried parent who has lost both parents. This band has been there as a tool kit for my emotional growth and dealing with the baggage.
This piece of music helped with the grief of loosing both parents to cancer.
Maynard words with all 3 of his bands are pure poetry emotionally woven through the bands thick tapestry. Tool are simply a blessing

These 2 tracks are such a unique sound for TOOL… this is about as “soft” as they get, and yet they are some of the most atmospheric and powerful songs that TOOL or any other band has ever written. You’ve still got some of TOOL’s best work coming up on this album! 10,000 Days and Fear Inoculum are some of my favorite albums of all time, and I’m positive that you’ll absolutely love everything left to be discovered on the rest of your TOOL journey ❤️
The soft wooshing sounds at the end are Judith Marie's wings flapping.
This song still hits me to the core no matter how many listens I've given it over the years. So blessed to have seen this live twice in 2006/07. Maynard doesn't perform it live anymore, it's too emotionally draining for him.

Tool always comes to the table with everything that they have. But this song, for me, is their masterpiece.
You said something that Ive been trying to explain for several years. You said that Adam paints with his guitar. That was so spot on it took my breath away. THAT is what makes him a great guitarist. All 4 of them came together on this and three of them came to help Maynard. I was fortunate enough to see this song performed live for the very first time. Immediately after the song, Adam stripped off his guitar, placed it on the ground and ran over to Maynard, who was doubled over, and just held him. I will NEVER forget that.

Man, what a beautiful reaction! I lost my father 5 years ago, the last 5 years of his life he was on dialysis and in wheelchair. He fought hard but at 58 he was called home. This song has helped me through the grief and suffering. I listened it so much, it brought me peace and comfort. Now it is one in my favorite of all time. But watching your reaction it brought all those emotions back and I shed a few tears with you, but it gets easier and the pain fades and dulls. You can never go wrong with Tool Therapy.
And whoever told you that this album is softer, was absolutely wrong. Yeah it’s not the raw anger and angst of undertow, but I think that this album especially the next few tracks after this are some of the hardest yet!
Btw, not next week, but the following week Lipan Conjuring/ Lost keys (Blame Hoffman)/ Rosetta Stone MUST be done in one reaction.

i think people misuse the word 'softer' to describe their arc. of course they are less raw, but it's more the fact that the production has got better and better, smoothing off the rough edges of their early, more brash sounding records, plus they use a lot more varied and slower tempos now.
I was waiting for this one! I still cry every time I hear it. Ignorant siblings in the congregation were the members of his mom and stepfather’s Zionist church. When she had her aneurysm, they literally told her and little Jimmy that the reason why this happened to her was because she was not right with god in some way. Implying she deserved it. They also asked her not to come back to church because of the shoes she had to wear for medical reasons and because she was unable to wear dresses again.
I read his book and he was very bothered by that, and he didn’t come right out and say it, but I got the impression that he was never able to understand how she could still keep her faith. He kinda resented her for it.
10,000 days is about 27 years, which represents the time between when Maynard's mother had her aneurysm in 1976, and when she finally passed in 2003. "10,000 days in the fire" is a direct reference to the time she spent suffering in her condition.
That light she left for him is his voice. His singing ability.
This quote is on the bottle of Judith wine. “As a child I used to dream that I could fly. I would stand on one leg, look up towards the sky, and with my arms lifted out and up, my fingers stretched towards the sun, the wind would come and swirl all around me, and then gently lift me up into the air.”

Fabulous reaction to my all time favorite Tool song. One of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written. Of ANY genre.
I wish I could thank Maynard for writing it and allowing us to share in it. I really really do. If I ever met him… I think that would be the only thing I’d say to him before I left him the hell alone. Ha.
Aside from Me and a Gun by Tori Amos, these 2 tracks are probably the most honest written lyrics you'll ever hear! Everyone has an emotional reaction to these 2 songs because of their own personal experiences and this is why I believe they are the glue of Tool Army! Tough songs to react to, but very much appreciated because it's gratifying to see the personal affect it has on someone else.
It makes me so sad that we will likely never hear them perform this song live (beyond their 10,000 Days tour in 2006); Maynard has indicated he regrets writing the song. I've heard people indicate this might be because he saw people "moshing" to the song when it was performed live and that enraged him. I loved how much he opened up with this song. He just lays it all out there and it's one of the most beautiful songs for it.
He should never regret it. The world is better with this beautiful piece of music and poetry in it.

I vividly remember while I was going through my cancer chemotherapy it humbled me profoundly bc I would watch sickly dying people one week & the next week they weren't there as they died.
It was my own mortality looking back at me in a way I was ready for I told myself I'm strong but if it was my time then bring me home. 🌌☁️🌫

I love these songs so much. Maynard did another song called "Judith" with A Perfect Circle, back in 2000 after Aenima and before Lateralus. Is a great song also.

I tried explaining to a coworker the other day about how Tool is timeless and didn't know exactly what I meant. Trying to explain to him that no matter at what point in your life or someone else's for that matter, it's relevant to something going on in your life. For me personally Lateralus , Aenima, and Undertow are what I listen to the most cause it's what I'm going through. Being in my 30s, married with 2 kids, and family issues, sometimes The Grudge is my go to. Other times it's Bottom. I know this is a long comment but one last thing, H is one of my new favs. I honestly never really gave H the time and respect it deserved cause I never could put a finger on it lyrically. All it took was Skullz here to dissect and break it down and Holy hell I couldn't believe how deep that song was. And how personally it hit home for me. Anyway keep up bro these reactions are one of the highlights of my week!

I have been lucky in the sense to not lose anyone specifically close to me, but regardless, Pillar of faith has ascended is hands down my favourite tool moment. I almost always tear up at that exact moment and the pressure release of 'ITS TIME NOW, GIVE ME MY WINGS' is like no other. Much love
So grateful to have found someone with genuine reactions, that reflects on personal experience ,to truly experience what tool have given so many people over the years. Such a refreshing change of pace to watching people reacting to all the masterpieces of tool and having everything go over their heads.
By no means am I an expert either, I find new things in their songs to this day and I have been listening to them for over 20 years now, you seem to pick up a lot of it on your first run through and it's awesome to see how many connections you have made to previous tracks, inspiring.
I lost my dad to cancer 10 years ago. I have a hard time listening to 1 and 2 without crying but I love the song(s) so much. Your emotional response and tears are completely justified and understandable. Great video my man.
The bitterness expressed towards his mother's church here is because the congregants would praise her strength to her face, then whisper behind her back how she must have done something wicked to deserve this punishment from God. Maynard has explained that directly in interviews.

It's so powerful to watch you, someone "we" have grown to know over these first three albums, experience Tool's tribute to JMK for the first time. Your reaction, so honest and smart and vulnerable, offers such a deeper perspective to our own feelings on the music.

You said you probably won't listen to these two very often. I feel the same, but these are absolute go-to's when I need to slow down my brain and consider some realities of life and death. Most of the Tool fan base is old enough to have experienced profound loss and sadness. This album can be medicinal.

Glad I got to see this played live on the actual 10,000 Days tour. Pretty sure I've heard or read somewhere they'll probably never play it again because it was so hard for Maynard to relive it day after day

The Ambience of this song live is something different. It was raining or misting at out show in 2007 the lights and the blue hue all over the Arena it's like everyone was intrinsically linked like one consciousness for Almost 30 minutes honestly it gives me chills thinking about this far down the road. I remember every detail of that night this was right before intermission which Tool does every show. They were sitting at the edge of the stage conversing with the fans and so i thought "Good time to get water and bathroom break." And then I hear Lateralus's subtle guitar and fucked off the bathroom ran to the wrong seat and enjoyed the magic Tool fans are so accommodating I told them I'm sorry I'm not trying to steal any seats, but I had been waiting on this and they all understood and welcomed me in, my seats were actually closer, but I'm glad I experienced that moment with those perfect strangers who may as well have been my life long friends. Anyways kind of went off to the left there, but it popped in my monkey brain so thought I'd share. Anyways as I've said to you before i am loving this journey with you my brother and we will all see you on the otherside.
This song is a masterpiece of musicianship. Everything within this song is pure perfection. After Maynard says "Give me my wings" and there's that breakdown, Adam, Danny, and Justin are doing three different things at once, but bouncing off of each other at the same time. From what I've read, this is one of, if not their most complicated song they've ever written. If one person is off by one measure, the whole song goes into ruins.

Maybe the storm isn't necessarily that a storm is coming but the storm he refers to in H. The storm within us. I'm not sure of a deeper meaning but given his writing tends to be personal on many levels and this song is possibly his most personal, it's the only thing I can relate the song to. No matter what interpretation, this song is just so beautiful.
My Grand Father's funeral was today. He was suffering for years, to the point where I listened to this and cried 1 1/2 years ago thinking about him. Also lost my father while I was young. Cannot relate to this enough

Edit: And the last verse, bringing us right back to the end of Wings For Marie. At the end of WFM, she died. And he raged..... and then he prayed. "If Heaven is real.... if you see your Maker's face.... look Him in the eye and tell Him it's time for Him to take you home."
I always interpreted this 2nd part as an expression of his resentment not just against family members who maybe abandoned his mother but also his criticism of the church and how it leeched off of her while she was alive but ultimately abandoned her. Despite not agreeing with church doctrine himself, he knew it was important to his mother and he's praying that if anyone deserves to go to heaven it's most definitely his mother and not all the hypocrites that just spouted off bullshit to him and her throughout their entire ordeal.
So right when you say Tool paint is own pictures.. My first blunts in my car with a friend, listening to Aenima album.. when it's finish, we tell each other about what we see through the music. And we had the same dreams 👌 Tx again for the double shot 🤟

Thank you for your heartfelt reaction and thoughtful interpretation of the song. Tool have been one of my all-time favourite bands. Their skill is unmatched (especially DC), and their songs have so much depth, yet it's as much as you are willing to hear from them.
I was lucky enough to see them during their 10,000 days tour, at an outdoor amphitheater in Toronto. A number of songs were absolutely mindblowing - they of course put on an incredible live performance. As the show went on the night rolled in, and so did the clouds... and what looked to be the weather.
Then they played Wings and 10,000 days... The timing was too perfect. The thunder in the song was echoed by the rumbling of the approaching stormfront... and a chill filled the air.
Then it rained down on THIS SONG. I'm not a religious person but this was the most spiritual experience I've ever had, and easily the single most memorable concert I've been to.
If anyone gets a chance to see them live, do yourself a favour and go!
My mother passed away in March after 38 yrs in a fire similar to the one Maynard’s mom went through. My entire life, I saw my mom deteriorate and never complain. I sat with her and watched her soul leave and imagined her getting her wings. All the kind words from people dont comfort me. This song is the closest thing Ive ever had to relate my feelings.

For some reason this reminds me of that scene in Apocalypse Now when they are slaughtering the cow. So damn psychedelic. I have also listened to this song in the middle of a thunder storm while trying to put all of my sheep and chickens up. It was epic with all of the lightning touching down around the area.

ah I love you, man. I've watched this a few times and you are so honest and down to earth. This song will aways be special to me, I watched my dad wither and die due to cancer. This song became so personal to me. To hear you relate to it in such a personal way made me feel like someone else connected with me in such a personal way. I appreciate you so much. Short story - My dad and I never got on until we found out he was dying. We tried to make up for lost time but it was so frustrating because we never knew how to communicate. Sometimes I'd get angry because we'd just sit in silence by his bed with nothing to say. I'd get up and leave, upset that no words were spoken. One time he just said , "Thank you" as I left. As I carried his coffin to the hearse we played The Humbling River. I'd lover to hear your thoughts on that song. Best regards.
