Making your kids pay rent is decidedly not old school. Nursing homes only became a real thing when capitalism started to degrade the extended familial unit.
That's not old school, that way of thinking is very new, it's a consequence of the suburban nuclear family that was born in the last century or so, before that for many millennia there was a much greater sense of community and the capitalist obsession with deriving profit from everything you possibly can, like renting living space in your home didn't exist yet. People would live with much of their extended family, and this idea of needing something in return from your relatives living there didn't exist, at least not financially. It is normal in most cultures to live with three generations of family in one house and not move out until you’re 25/26. It used to be normal here but then 1950s individualism and starter homes happened.
People will never admit their parents can be toxic narcissists. Its very prevalent in this environment . Most will learn until someone else's inform them they have that characteristics then they will see how their parents can be or are. We're raised to never question our parents.
In the Midwest US it's very normal for parents to charge their adult kids rent... Adults should be able to provide for themselves and not mooch off their parents, especially when you have a significant other with you. Paying rent to your parents is absolutely okay, you're not a kid anymore and you're not a child in their house. You're a full grown adult doing grown ass adult things. Stavvy you seem so far from reality that it's actually insane
On the east coast especially with European families, Stav is Greek I’m Italian, it’s kinda ridiculous. You live with your parents when you need to to save money, why would they charge you if you’re trying to save money?
@Kyle_etc because it's literally an adult responsibility to keep up on your own bills and not mooch off of others. Your parents had your entire lives to set you up for success for when you're adults, so when parents work so damn hard for you to succeed and you turn around and just move back in with them they're obviously going to make you do what everyone else has to do. It's an absolute privilege to have parents that house you, pay for you, and take care of you in your adulthood.
@@SaltyCadoIf you’re grown ass kid can’t understand the concept of monthly bills then you have bigger issues lol If you set your kids up properly they wouldn’t need to move out at 18, instead pay themselves through college and be a home owner before 25; all because you decide not to mooch of your kids for rent money lol It’s only an white American thing to kick your kids out at 18 or charge them rent tbh

i was almost ready to be on the caller4s side until he mentions a new puppy and going on a vacation. if you have to move back in with your parents because of financial troubles, i get it. shit happens. but new puppy and vacation does not seem like u have financial troubles. it seems like you want to just yolo through life.
Remember when stav had a good podcast? Good times
Wait. Stavvy isn’t gay?
Bro if you 18 + and you not going to school your paying rent in my house
Two full grown adults can't even afford the rent on a studio apartment anywhere? They gotta work harder and make more money. No way is moving in with his parents a good idea given everything else going on, and I'm surprised his mom is even giving him the offer.
To be fair, we don't know the financial situation of his parents.
Could be a genuine financial burden to live with their dropkick son and his loser gf.
Look at your own life. It is sad is it not?
Touch grass. In this fucking economy staying at your parents is not being a loser
@@user-sk4nt5bm5r what a weird reply.
Rare case of a split in the comments
Eldis got it right away, you can't be an adult crying about not liking living with mommy. Plus dude sounds like he has a drug problem, i bet the vacation was a rehab/sobering trip.
This guest is clueless.
And also impossible to understand

Move out of your moms house. Simple solution.
This sounds like some shit my mom would do
Signing a lease is nuts but your in your 30s and need to move home when you have two incomes you should get charged rent in principle because you clearly have no financial skills at all
Charging your kids rent is VERY much a US specific thing, or atleast the US is worst offender for it
I believe you, but it also seems like if you're an adult, you should be contributing to the household in some way.
@@user82938 the whole point is to give your kid a leg up, allowing them to save and advance their career in our tough economy. Making them contribute on principe because you feel they should is the opposite of that.
@@Matt-xc6sp I think that really depends on what they're doing.

They live together and have two incomes but can't afford rent so are now forced to live with your psycho mother? Do Uber or Doordash so you don't have to live with her!

Lmao this guy is too much... "built" furniture where you're staying, brother, you mean you assembled it 😂 man is soft
Definitely move out
You are in a 6 year relationship and you moved back in, how is stav surprised his mom's gonna charge rent??? These people are fully grown adults, you shouldn't be looking to leech off your mom for more than 6 months while getting through a tough time.
I was paying rent at 18 and helping with bills before that, it's insane to me how entitled people are.
You parents are shit and your cope is that everyone else has an issue. Don't have kids bud.
Just because it was hard for you, doesn’t mean it needs to be hard for others goat. And the mom is fucking searching their stuff so I don’t think she deserves the rent money
Euro parents are different, my mom who was born here charges me rent, but my dad who was born in Italy was a whole section of the house for his sons.
It is normal in most cultures to live with three generations of family in one house and not move out until you’re 25/26. It used to be normal here but then 1950s individualism and starter homes happened.
Traditional cultures value families taking care of each other. American individualism brainrot is too real lmao
I feel like yall in the comments are skating past the fact that the mom is a psychopath digging through, NOT HER SON, but his girlfriends shit.
She was guaranteed looking for drugs to make sure the gf wasn't making his addiction worse or vice versa
People will never admit their parents can be toxic narcissists. Its very prevalent in this environment . Most will learn until someone else's inform them they have that characteristics then they will see how their parents can be or are. We're raised to never question our parents.
You have an incredibly low bar for psychopathy.
If you’re staying in my house for free then you get treated like a child
This guest is waaaaaay to kind hearted. She almost sounds like she is going to grow into that kind of mom…lol

@@SaltyCadoIf you’re grown ass kid can’t understand the concept of monthly bills then you have bigger issues lol If you set your kids up properly they wouldn’t need to move out at 18, instead pay themselves through college and be a home owner before 25; all because you decide not to mooch of your kids for rent money lol
It’s only an white American thing to kick your kids out at 18 or charge them rent tbh
Protestant ethic making America toxic for families.
Most of world has multigenerational housing as standard. You live in bizarre world and don't even notice.
@salty Its a US mentality and culture. They tried to spread it globally but didn't work out. The UK is now suffering from it for adopting same culture. Due to it, the younger generation are shipping out their elderly to other countries to be taken care of.
