Kaushiki Chakraborty sings the romantic afternoon Raag Bhimpalasi, showcasing the ornaments and rapid-fire melodies of her Patiala khayal gharana.

Kaushiki’s virtuoso technique is the result of years of intense training, primarily from her esteemed father Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty. She hails from the Patiala gharana, known for a strong Islamic influence and elaborate ornamentation when singing taan [fast improvised melodies]. She describes her approach: “It’s all in the mind. One has to mentally align oneself to the form...My training has taught me two approaches to music - to do music and or to become it. The latter gives you the fluidity to transcend form and become one with it.”
Milind Kulkarni, also featured, is a modern exponent of Hindustani classical harmonium. Starting at the age of seven, he learned fast under the tutelage of successive gurus - Vasantrao Gurav, Anna Diwan, and Pramod Marathe. He still studies under the latter, and also receives accompaniment instruction from leading non-harmonium artists too, including vocalist Ulhas Kashalkar and tabla maestro Suresh Talwalkar.
Bhimpalasi is an afternoon raga, said to evoke sringara [attraction, romantic love]. It uses the notes of Kafi thaat, with an aroha [ascent] of nSgmPnS and an avroh [descent] of SnDPmgRS. Characteristically, Dha and Re only appear in the descending line, and are approached from the notes above. Ma is the vadi [king note]. @@chiraggupta9719 Are you talking of the Garaj Garaj Jugalbandi? The only similarity between this and that is that both use "taans" (the "aaaa" through different notes within the framework of the raga which leads to the main line again) and no Hindustani piece of music is complete without taans.
Interestingly, in the series, Radhe is see practising this song, Jaa Jaa Re, in the second half, in the 9th episode if I'm not wrong.

Best thing I have found on internet in my entire life till date. Nothing had driven me this far Specially 3:48 to 3:57. I am a student of Electronic Music production but I NEVER seen anything like this good before. Love It!! This is how rich and experimental can our Classical music be. There maybe some purity issue as I saw in comment section but that's total beyond me because I don't have much knowledge about Classical Music but as a common listener This is the best thing I have heard till date. Love Kausiki Ji And Ustads on Tabla and Harmonium. Thank you DarbarFestival to deliver such masterpiece to music lovers like me.

To all those who are saying that she has ruined the essence of bhimpalasri raag,should mind that kaushiki chakrabarty is not so fool to destroy the soul of any raag. Do you think that such a big classical legend won't know what she is singing?????? Will she do so even after being well versed in the grammar of classical raags?????Just see the speed of her tongue during those 'taans'and her approach to mukhra after doing a long stretch of so fast 'taans'.At last I want to say that being a trained classical singer myself I don't think I have said anything wrong and it feels sad that I can never sing like her.This is actually real classical singing which only less number of people can attempt.
Application of taans is not the soul of the raga you might know it already, bhimsen Joshi used to apply many many taans but none of them were wrong but he unnecessarily used them , it's just like a professional chef extremely garnishing his dish

Have you heard Khayals in drut, they are usually like this and have you heard her doing those taans im like how can someone speak so fast that is a talent. You want to listen stuff with less taans, sargams and murkis then listen to her other Darbar song. Pata nahein kahan se ajatein yeh self proclaimed pandits. Just listen quietly maybe you will get a adhytik feeling closer to god!!
