Some years ago Lataji herself was literally in tears by the 'memorization' of this song , sung live by Bidushi Kaushiki Chakraborty,, and here some pandits are criticizing this performance,,
I am a great admirer of Kaushiki but I do not dispute the right of "some pandits" to express their opinions. Why are we Indians unable to appreciate beauty without turning it into a competition.
This is the actual way of singing darda ,if I am wrong please correct me but this is the actual flavoir of singing Dadra, chaiti, kajri in one word semi- classical stream as a classical student i know that and Didi is awesome her techniques ❤❤❤❤ just love them

For me, art has never been stoic and it is this dynamic nature of Indian Classical Music that has fascinated me time and again. The constant breaking and creating, making and unmaking, keeps art going, for art is founded on personal interpretations and it is intended first and foremost for the happiness of the artist, then the audience. It takes a scholarly approach and great elan to be able to interpret and execute Classical Music differently each time. It is in this process that the ears of the audience gets trained too (to not be backward as the audience is, after all, our duty). Loved this interpretation/rendition, as much as I know I will love the next interpretation of this song that I'll come across.
Absolutely agreed but unfortunately not all listeners has this perspective or the capacity to understand and perceive in this manner. Kaushiki ji is an artist who is though popular and respected is not understood that well. Her musical sense and aesthetics is way beyond her age and i believe not all can truly fathom that intellectually. I am in awe of her mastery n musical philosophy. Ek umar beet jayegi par 1% v nahi ho payungi inke age. Such a well put comment ❤
I am someone who isn’t a very big fan of a lot improvisations to an original song like for example what navdeep wadali does in Indian idol cos that very often ruins the song. But now I realise that actually if done well it can sound very nice. Kaushiki chakroborty in my opinion did such a great job improvising on this song and making it her own. It’s really very very nice to listen to. In this case I like both renditions of Kaushiki’s and Shobha gurtu’s
She herself is in a gulabi saree, with a large red bindi on her forehead-what an epitome of elegance and delicacy. All the ladies here seem to be direct incarnations of Devi Saraswati.
Suggestion: please make intensity of tanpura sound lower and seem like accompanying the vocalists or musicians. Let sound engineers know this while they are mixing the sound. It hurt my ears when using headphones. If anybody else didn't feel the same with headphones, please let me know.
@varunjiii8398 wrong. I have pretty good headphones and tanpura was too sharp. Interfered with vocals. It may be tough to differentiate Ina live setup but impacted a fine performance.
90% of the time I have seen dumb sound controllers. they know technalities but dont know anything about music to make a balanced mixing. Also same things with videographers, due to zero passion for music they dont know how to change camera angles and zooms for various artists, again this is simple because they make good shoots but dont understand music nuances to capture them on camera

It is unfair to compare Shoba Gurtu with Kaushiki Chakraborty. They belong to different schools and styles of singing. I am a fan of both, and I enjoy both renditions.
The psuedo kansens acting like tansens in youtube comment sections of some artists who are awayyyyy above their reach when it comes to their artform makes me enraged but also its lowkey funny. Over compensating basically. Coming to the song While the original version has its own beauty and is unmatched .but this particular version by k ji is Marvellous. The alaap established essence of pahadi is beautifully. Those who think its too much. Stop listening to artists who like to experiment, knows their art and have the ability to create their thing inspired by a structure.

We are obsessed with the alap, laykari etc of Shoba Gurtu and so a little deviation from the familiar style may create a momentary disappointment. But at the end one has that elusive satisfying feeling.
@rajaedi7048 no true music lover can react in such a bad way to some comment.. Shobha Gurtu has been one of the ultimate Thumari masters and the way she used to flourish thumari by her expressions faithful just to the mood and context in the "thumari" way without trying to impress in various ways has been her trademark. Her solid voice with faithfulness to the thumri has been the soul of her presentations. Comparing this performance with Shobha Jee's version is not at all practical. Kaushiki has been the present of classical singing and has presented this thumari with lots of variations which might impress some audience but a true thumari lover always can argue that Shobha Jee's version sounds better. There should be freedom of expression without harming others feelings ❤
