      Given that practicing Muslims practice intermittent fasting for an entire month every year, and obesity is just as common among them as any other population outside North America (and most inside) and that the proliferation of obesity /in/ North America is now seemingly linked to epigenetic consequences of the Great Depression & WW2 food shortages, not solely modern diets ... ya, not actually hopeful.
      And SciShow won't do a show unless there's research, preferably multiple studies from multiple sources. They don't just publish opinions.

    • @MrEmiosk
      @MrEmiosk 5 лет назад +1

      Not much to say. All It does is help the body clean "dirt" from the system cause you are not adding much new "dirt" during the fast. Other than that you increase the amount of energy/stuff your body can take up from food, that is your body wastes less cause its in panic mode. It thinks you are in a starvation situation so it scrabbles to consume all it can from what little you put in. So in certain situations it actually helps you to gain weight if you do not balance your diet to counter this effect.
      So in short. you have to fast a few days every few days to gain a permanent-ish effect, you need to eat less but have to be extra careful so you do not undernourish yourself .
      I am on a keto based diet, and I fast working hours(that is eat a small meal coming home and one meal leaving for work, exercise in the gym (45-60min) 20-25min on the treadmill and then lift weights. I can tell you if you keep between 20-50g carbs as a rule 5/7 days and never above 100g keep yourself moving (a 5-8km walk a day minimum) and you will lose fat reserves, get more energy(or at least the feeling of it) and you stymie the need for sugary treats. I actually get a runny tummy nowadays from any excessive/pure non leaf carbs, it doesn't digests properly, and that is a good motivator to keep yourself away from such things!!
      Sorry went on a bit of a rant and off topic slightly, but I thought I would add it, if not for your interest then for someone else that might read. All I can say is to take time and listen to your body and it will tell you what it wants/needs/dislikes. Might have to trial and error a lot when it comes to food.

      Actually just eating meat only would be sufficient. You will get your metabolism boasted by up to 300 calories a day. You will switch to burning fat. You will stop being hungry within 2 weeks. All of this is proven by those who did switch to carnivore diet, numerous studies and myself.
      I am hungry for coffee only (modification of bulletproof coffee - coffee with grass fed butter, cacao butter and coconut oil)
      Be aware your kidneys will do much better job and you would have to consume 5-6 grams of ordinary salt and at least 9 grams of potassium chloride (e-508), otherwise you would get into sodium and potassium deficiency within just few days.

    • @voivoed
      @voivoed 5 лет назад +9

      Guess what, even if they do, it won't be enough to make it significant compared to actual changes in your diet. A 50 calories increase in your metabolism like the one in the capsaicin example would lead to a loss of 1 pound every 2.33 months, assuming you are eating at the exact calorie intake to maintain your current weight. That's nothing. You could achieve the same result by removing one tablespoon of sugar from what you add to your coffee in the morning.

    • @WizardNumberNext
      @WizardNumberNext 5 лет назад +1

      @@voivoed you are right in being wrong
      Removing 1 tablespoon of sugar from diet may actually be sufficient to lower insulin, which may be sufficient to be able to burn fat instead of sugar
      Burning off sugar is an emergency and actually body wants to get rid of sugar that is the reason why it is burned in first place.

      They never like to give any real measurable benefits because they can say "it may improve__________" because as long as SOME people show SOME improvement they can keep making those claims without getting sued, even if its a 1% increase and even if the increase is within the margin of error. I saw some article making typical clickbait claims of "this thing will make you lose weight" and when i clicked on the source link the source was a study said something like "the supplement caused an average 3% reduction in weight and the margin of error was 5%" so the supposed benefit was below the margin of error so it could have theoretically have done zero benefit or even done a tiny bit of harm like a 1% increase in weight.

    I need something to slow down my metabolism. Seriously, every single calorie I eat, my body burns off right away. I tried to sit down and relax for an hour after I eat to see if that helps but so far, nothing. I need something to help me gain weight.

    Can anyone further explain what he meant when he said that the EGCG in green tea extract is known to degrade neurotransmitters such as dopamine, etc.? I'd love to know more about the degradation process and what it causes. My initial, uneducated reaction was that it sounded negative, and that to have your very important neurotransmitters degrade seems like it would have negative effects, but I'm confused because I'm pretty sure he made it sound like a positive benefit.

    As someone with a disease that sends the Sympathetic Nervous System into overdrive, I don’t understand the desire to ingest/do things to freak it out. I’d kill for my heart rate to slow to normal, my limbs to get proper blood flow, my sleep to even out, and the immense pain to die down. I’m not even allowed to watch superhero movies because they can stimulate adrenaline release and worsen symptoms.

    Some organs and tissues are very specific about which substrate they use. For example, liver cells will use most nutrients for energy EXCEPT glucose, whereas brain cells are the opposite: they depend almost exclusively on glucose, or ketone bodies under starvation conditions.

    Why we have headaches before not eating for long time? Specially at morning after 12-14 hours without eating?
    I stopped morning headaches by eating normally at nights, and eating something before the 8 hours. After that 8 hs, headaches are coming with no doubt. So no matter if at 4pm I'm still awake, eat something and back to bed, then awakenings are normal.
    Also started to do squats, abs and some easy home fitness, or jump onto my Doop's (in-line) and practice equilibrium, but slowly & at home, not streets. yeah I'm a novice and don't want to break my head on the streets till I'm well prepared for those rollers lol also use the Doops to do legs and butt, as it's weight is a good resistance, then go to roll some 15 minutes along the house, then another set of legs-abs using the rollers. I don't know if this is fine to mix weight lift + cardio exercise, but it makes me feel better and strong, take off anxiety and eat better.
    Well, my muscles hurts and in a week I noticed much better tonification but the belly fat is there and I need to eat more calories than before...as muscles need proteins to grow.

    I'll back the caffeine one. I drink 4 sodas a day and eat basically whenever I want and am only right at average weight. Though I'm an insomniac so I can't really back the sleep one. Even when not on caffeine I still can't sleep. I only get dreams like once a month if even and when I wake up I usually feel worse than when I went to sleep (but that goes away after about 15-30 minutes). Possibly connected to me never really feeling tired. I just sleep when I want to. Have gone more than 24 hours and only stopped when my eyes started to dry out. But hey I stay out a solid 10-18 hours afterwards.

    Insulin suppresses the expression of UCP1 in adipose tissue, thus forcing mitochondria in it to burn less fat. UCP1 is important enough that several SNPs of it have been associated with adiposity. Insulin also inhibits hormone-sensitive lipase, thus making fat in adipose tissue less accessible to the body. Lowering blood insulin isn't "really hard to do," although I doubt a supplement could do it.

    I started reading studies more closely when I happened to read one about alcohol and testosterone. Turns out the researchers considered keeping the rats at a .24 BAC 24/7 was moderate consumption. Light consumption was I believe around .12 BAC, so constantly legally drunk still. Heavy consumption was something ridiculous like .45 BAC 24/7, not even sure how those rats lived that long. Not sure how much I'd trust that study.

    When you say exercise does not burn many calories can you quantify that? Does that mean small amounts of exercise doesnt burn a lot of calories? Do the calorie counts on exercise equipment massively over estimate how much you are burning? Or are they showing a different value from what people are expecting when they see the numbers?

    The only supplements that truly work in the increasing of your basal metabolic rate are all illegal or nearly illegal. These same ingredients are also highly risky to take, eliciting numerous effects on health. To name a few ephedrine, as well in the same family Clenbuterol act as B-Adrenergic receptor agonists which cause dilation of the bronchioles causing the heart to increase rate in order to compensate for the dilated bronchioles. These ingredients may increase basametobolic rate but can lead to bone mineral density decrease as well as forces cardiac tissues to more forcefully contract which can, in high dosages cause abnormal levels of minerals and other micronutrients that result in improper functioning. In the same breath, when takin in modest dosages essentially have little to no deleterious effects and can possibly assist in an already effective caloric restrictive food plan.

    Not to mention when things first started going downhill I barely ate because I didn’t have appetite so I plummeted to being underweight in the shortest time. So my body is holding onto these fat cells for dear life...

How does something as physiologically high-level as a lack of sleep interfere with the chemical interactions between two well-defined molecules?

    Best advice I can give anybody looking to use supplements such as "fat burners" is RTFL. Read the ... friendly label. Also, the ones that actually do something don't do it in a vacuum. If you don't do any work to lose weight or gain muscle, then there's nothing for the supplement to work on. It doesn't make the engine run, but some of them do give a little horsepower boost.

    I bothered to read the ingredients on all those meta boosters at my local store, and there was one common ingredient among them all. Caffeine in large doses. Like above what you'd get out of drinking a 1 liter energy drink can. Some had twice that. Everything else in them was either just a stimulant, or something to make it feel like it was working. Seriously if anyone in the comments reads this, please stay away from those products if you're already drinking sodas with caffeine, energy drinks, or pre-workouts, or a combo of all the above. You're already getting all you will from the caffeine in your other products, and more than you actually need in a day. Do not underestimate caffeine's ability to make you over dose on it. You will go from feeling an adrenaline like amp(what pre-workout makes you feel) to being on the ground with heart failure.

    Going on a fast makes you burn fat so you won’t be hungry but going on a diet still makes you burn sugar so you start losing muscles and feel fatigued.
