We never keep grey tank open, just drain it once a day. If you have never had a door open while driving then you have not been rving long, or you don’t have Doors. I love the saw idea, but i can see somebody getting pissed off for cutting their tree branches. Love all the tips, I’m sure we will be doing one of these videos some day.
We have made mistakes due to being in a hurry. YEP, the worse self inflicted nonsense. We have learned and now totally mistake free. LOL Enjoy your channel. Keep up the great work
Great tips, all of them easy enough to make. You are 100 percent correct on taking your time always, and that would apply to the sticks and bricks also. Every screw up I’ve made has been due to rushing something.
Great tips, Storage bay doors are a big one, It's happened to us on more than a few occasions. We also need to make sure that we have enough room in between the slide rooms and that "Fixed" object, like a power pedestal, a tree, that picnic table! Yep been there and done that.
My tip is to check that all windows are latched before you start driving. I tow a vintage Airstream trailer and the windows hinge at the top and open outward from the bottom. To remove them you disconnect the hold-open hardware, open it all the way (horizontal) and slide it off the hinge. The hardware isn't too sturdy and people have arrived at their destination to find a window missing. Another tip is to always carry change for toll booths in the cab or in the tow vehicle. We came upon a toll booth in the middle of nowhere in PA that only took coins and was unattended. No bills or credit cards! There were no signs that indicated we were on a toll road. Fortunately, we had laundry change but had to get into the trailer to get it.
I agree some toll booths are narrow. The rule I suggest is hug the left side. On our KA there is an alarm is bay doors are open. We carry a pole saw as well. Number seven is why I wait till morning to hook up dump hose. My biggest mistake was forgetting to chock wheels before unhooking the trailer. Not pretty.
Hey Roy, the pole saw is a must. Nice having those alarms on your bay doors. We had a chock incident also, just didn’t make this video!! Thanks again for watching and supporting the channel. Izzy
Oh man.. we have certainly made our share of mistakes.. maybe we’ll do a video on it... but the bottom line is they mostly come down to rushing and not staying with the routines we established. Great video... sewer flys... yuk
Happy Place Diaries all of ours has been rushing and not double and triple checking, except the flies lol. Glad you liked the video and thanks for the comment. Izzy
We've been fortunate so far. Our biggest so far was unhitching before putting the chocks in place. Had the chains no still been hooked to the truck, the trailer would have rolled backwards much farther than I would have wanted it to. Other than that...knock on wood, no real mishaps, yet.
I'll be 64 next month. I've been around the block a few times. I'm sure I've learned from so many past mistakes. I also find RVing much easier than boating, where I've made my share and few other's share of mistakes. Not to say I still couldn't few now.
About the sewer flies, I always leave the gray tank open, but I also make sure I have a trap in my sewer hose . I leave a low spot in the hose that traps water so sewer gas won't come back into my tank!
When I was training for my Commercial license..the first thing the instructor said..."There are 6 sides to a bus" He said it all the time..and its so true! Love your videos!!!
Izzy, good video. We all have those things we are not proud of. I had my battery compartment door not latch. Still working to get it to always lock. We were driving into Flaming Gorge in 40 mph winds and the winds blew the door open. My alarm system beeped to alert us a door was open and we started looking to pull over. I had to duct tape it closed since I couldn't get it to latch. I did the sewer valve thing when I had my old RV in for maintenance. I asked the shop to pressure wash the black tank. When they were done they put the cap on but didn't close the black tank valve. We left the dealer and went to a dry camping spot. When we went to dump I caught that the valve was open but had stuff in the pipes. Used a bucket to catch the spillage. I have a clear section on the outlet so I can see what coming out but it would let me know if I have stuff in the pipe before I remove the cap. I also put a solar charged LED light over the wet bay so I have area lighting if I have to hookup at night. Works great. You are doing a great job with the videos. I do most of my support answering questions on the Bay Star group.
It’s all part of the adventure Dave. We can only learn by our mistakes. The important thing is to keep morning forward. Thanks for watching the video and sharing your experience and your work with the FB page. Izzy
Lol Thank goodness for duct tape. Yes, always carry tools. I had #3 happen to me. That tree limb saw is a great idea. Can't imagine what it would be like working a fine rig like yours ... I'd be scared to death. Thanks for your candor and sharing your knowledge! Education ain't cheap.
Sewer flies ... ugh! We have a very small RV with small tanks, so I've never kept the valves open (tech told me its best to use the gray water to flush the hose after dumping the black tank). Kind of makes me wish those tank monitors had either Bluetooth or Wifi alerting capabilities in those larger RVs. Would be nice to get alerts on your phone when they need to be dumped.
That is a good idea. We do have monitors on our tanks that we watch we also would close the tank night before we left camp to make sure we had water to clean hose. Thanks for watching and your comment. Izzy
I really enjoy your videos! We’ve had RVs for a lot of years but now we are looking as retirees and so much gas changed. Thanks you make things very easy to understand! #1 don’t rush lol
Yes don’t rush. It can be a costly mistake. I would also wait it out a bit now RV sales are way up and you will pay more than you need to. Thanks for watching and the comment Izzy
Thanks for the reply. Enjoying the video’s and am a new subscriber. Wife and I have a Jayco Class C, but a Newmar may be our next one and I’m learning a lot from your channel.
Carl May awesome. Happy to have you here and we’re so glad you’re enjoying the channel. Can’t go wrong with a Newmar and we also went from a Jayco (trailer) to a Newmar. Love our Newmar! - MJ
I have done some of the same mistakes as you all. It’s when you rush bad thing happen that makes $$ disappear. Go slow and save money by not having mistakes. Thanks for sharing with us well done 👍
TO keep the sewer flies out all you need to do is to make a water trap in you sewer hose take two pieces of fire wood and space them apart run your hose over them and create a low spot between them where water will be trapped just like a trap under your sink . Just make sure the space between the wood is about 1 foot it's to much water for then to get threw.
Is it wrong to LIKE your MISTAKES list?!? You said DOO DOO🤣😉Never heard of Sewer Flies 😳EWWW Great info...we have only rented an RV for 11 days in Alaska...but are returning this Spring for a longer stay, renting from the same company. I was SO SCARED, driving the first day, I felt like I was gonna RIP the side mirrors OFF!! You Kids are living the dream...and have a great channel! We can learn from each other! Hope you stay WARM🥶and cozy! Enjoy your weekend! Lisa&Rick
No please like our mistakes lol. We never heard of sewer flies until they invaded our rig. Then it was game on. Not something we want again, but a fairly easy task of getting rid of them. Thank you for watching the video, your kind words and comment. Izzy
Mistakes? Oh yeah, I've made a few. Fortunately was able to recover from them. At the end of one trip in our 5th wheel, when leaving the campground, dumping our tanks on the way, I noticed that I had forgotten to lock the hitch! I was lucky that for the short distance to the dump area that it was a slow go and no hills, otherwise I fear what could have happened! Shortly after that episode we traded the 5th wheel for a motor home - not because of mistakes! The motor home came with a Direct TV satellite antenna, however due to the fact that they didn't (at that time) allow for part time access, we switched to DISH, which required installation of a DISH specific antenna. We had just had the new antenna installed, drove the coach back home, activated the service and tested it out in the driveway. Testing requires that the dish be raised up so that it can search for the satellites. Before moving the coach you need to make sure that the antenna is retracted into the travel position. Doing so, disconnected from shore power, requires using the generator, which I had started up. So I pressed "retract", gave it a few minutes, then turned off the generator. We have a garage in which we keep our RV. As I "carefully" backed the motor home into the garage I heard this weird scrapping sound and thought I must have left something in the middle of the garage. I got out, searched around and saw nothing obvious. I returned to the motor home, continued backing, more scrapping sounds. BY this time I thought, OK, something is wrong here. Got out, looked all around again - only this time I looked up - YIKES! Brand new satellite dish jammed up against the open garage door, twisted like a pretzel! So jammed in fact, that I couldn't drive forward OR backwards without also damaging the raised garage door! After a few cuss words, I climbed up on top of the motor home and proceeded to dismantle the antenna, which by now was junk. My wife, much calmer than me in situations like this, called the dealer where we purchased the new antenna and secured the purchase of a replacement. Too embarrassed to show my face by my mistake, she went and picked it up. And too embarrassed to let the dealer perform the re-installation, I learned the hard way to do it myself. Since this fiasco, I learned to - ALWAYS, ALWAYS - check all around the RV before moving it! So don't feel bad, Izzy, my mistakes tend to be much more expensive than yours! And I understand completely about learning to do things yourself! Thank you for your excellent videos!
Great video! Since I will be ordering the 2021 Bay Star 3401 in April 2020 and it is great to follow along with you guys for all the terrific tips and experiences you have had on your 3626. Will be getting the new F-53 chassis and for a special upping the chassis to the 26,000lb. Wish you could special an "adjustable" mirror on an arm that would move inward instead of being fixed. Will have about 6 inches on each side at home base to pull through because of the mirrors! Happy New Year!
Hey guys. My biggest screwup was this one psycho chick. She was slowly killing me. What a monster. Her name was... oh wait, you mean RV screwups!? Oh. Well, I guess I shoulda bought a dang RV and drove the hell outta there sooner. 😜 Of course everyone has a sewer story. Put me on that list. Good vid guys. MJ, you need a new jacket, kiddo. Endless RVing I am, thanks. And lose the complex. If I didn't like y'all, you wouldn't even know who I am. I wouldn't bother. That should tell you something! Then again, maybe that's what you'd prefer! Lol 😉
Biggest mistake, after a long day of driving, then a tire blowout on the trailer, arrived at the camp site after dark. My santi-flush and water inlet are located next to each other. I connected the water hose mistakenly to the santi-flush. A few minutes later, I’m confused why water is flowing off the roof, wife then begins to scream from inside, at that moment I realize what I’ve done. No damage, just a flooded mess inside. I placed an outdoor light fixture above the water connections ( 05 trailer, no wet bay), painted a screw in plug red, for the santi-flush. Never made that mistake again, lol.
I've never had sewer flies! Thank goodness! Yeah the toll booths are narrow. A good campground would take care of that. Poop! 🤔 never good! Thanks for sharing.

After showers I usually check grey tank levels and dump according to levels. Like keeping grey for washing out hose after dumping black tank!
We would close grey tank day before we leave site to make sure we had enough grey. Thanks for watching and the comment.

me2 Steve, but I still close the gray tank valves.
