- Do your yellow Copic Marker blending combinations look flat and fake? Let's use color theory to shade realistic daffodil flower using an unexpected violet marker.
Applied Color Theory for Alcohol Markers.
Join illustrator and art instructor, Amy Shulke from VanillaArts.com in a color theory exercise for yellow markers. Yellow is a challenge to shade with realism. Color theory can help but most color theory videos are nothing more than color wheel tours. Amy walks you through her coloring process for desaturating yellow with violet Copic Markers and Prismacolor pencils. If you’ve ever been disappointed by your yellow blending combinations or if you're still using orange or brown markers to shade yellow, this series of videos covers the color theory info you actually need.

Hi folks, I'm here live for the next hour. Let's chat about yellow, violet, underpaint, and color theory!
hi Amy !!
Only 4 minutes in and already great pearls of wisdom!!! Coloring a project isn’t practice! Love it!
I'm so glad I found your channel! I am new to alcohol markers and for years I stayed away because I thought the color always looked flat and cartoonish but recently have discovered that you can do really amazing things with alcohol marker by using various layering and color theory techniques and now I'm all in! This video really gives me a better way to think about color choices. Also I too think marker looks naked without colored pencil on top!
Welcome to my world! So glad you found me and please keep letting me know when you connect with a concept or topic. It's really helpful to hear from viewers, more than I can express!
Hi Amy, wow! Your Daffodil is absolutely stunning! Thank you so much for sharing your technique!
You are so welcome! Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for your wonderful feedback on the Yellow color swatching video too.
One of my biggest regrets from my early learning days is that my parents framed most of my early artwork and it was given to family members as gifts. I lost most of my early work this way. What I didn't realize at the time was that without being able to go back and look at earlier work, I had no idea which skills needed improvement.
This 4x4 was colored on Cryogen which we just found out has been discontinued. I'll be looking for a suitable replacement. Something thick which works with marker but has tooth for pencil. It's a tough thing to find!
So beautiful 🎉😊😊
Thank you my friend for sharing with us 😊
I'm so glad you enjoyed it. Hopefully this simplifies shading yellow for you!
For the background, the secret to eliminating background streaks is to start on very good marker paper and then use lots of generous layers to build up the ink to the maximum darkness. Check out my testing series at markernovice.com/uncapped-archive . The four boxes towards the top show you how many layers it takes to build each ink to the maximum value where streaks will no longer show. Some markers take more layers than others.
Love, love all the help and techniques. Thanks
You are so welcome! I'll be back in mid-April with green!
Thank you very informative! Really enjoyed.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Next time, I'll try using the Premier function for a chat that doesn't have to be refreshed. I was worried today that the live chat is hard to find when viewing older videos. But I think for the live refresh rate, it's probably worth the discussion disappearing behind a button.
This was great! Thank you so much, Amy!
You're so welcome! Be sure to post your 4x4 exercise(s) over at Facebook. I'm eager to see how it helps and compare tips. facebook.com/groups/vanillaartschat/
😂Seen the door open, and thought your house was haunted, until I seen that beautiful Dalmation walk in. 😂❤
@@yolandakidd5339 Ha! That’s Finnegan. He owns the house. I merely rent it from him, just a few biscuits a month.
@@AmyShulke Nice figured that. Lol
Would never think to shade with purple...I did share with some groups
I didn't either until well into art school. This is where I found yellow + grayed lavender www.gardnermuseum.org/experience/collection/10819
Thank you for this
My pleasure! Glad you enjoyed it and I hope you try coloring it!
Hi Amy! Here for a bit...just finished the Marker Novice email.
Hi Cheri. I have no plans to let this material expire, so watch when you can.
I am guilty of not taking my time choosing markers and making sure they blend well and the underpainting disapears and then I have a project that I know I need to redo because I didnt spend the time before starting to color :D
I'm guilty of the same thing. I do swatch almost everything ahead of time but there's always something that catches me unaware... an object I didn't notice. Used to happen a lot when I was working with Power Poppy images. M is sneaky and she draws hidden stuff.
I find I don't use enough underpaint...then I'm always having to build it later with pencil. Getting better but it's a process!
I'll be posting my completed 4x4 over on Vanilla Chat at Facebook. Post yours there too with some thoughts and observations. We can learn from the community. facebook.com/groups/vanillaartschat/
Amy so 30 mins practice what if we are almost done ? Can I finish it on my next 30 min practice?
hahah. I think the goal is not to spend all day doing it
Ok I have a question...I've been using copics for about 8 years, but they never seem to "self blend" Suggestions?
What paper are you using?
Hey Amy!
Hi Nancy!
Hi Amy!
Hi Jacqueline! I saw you started the coloring basics series last week!
