I had the Line 6 Flextone 1 (300 Watts SS if you ran it on 2 Cabs). I kept a Flextone Stack on one side of the stage, and an early JCM 2203 stack on the other. The clean tones were great, and running it in stereo with the 2203, was deafening and brutal!! Now days it’s a Diezel Herbert pedal (with some other effects), through a powered, tube, 1x12 cab. The variety with the modeling capabilities really helps you in the creative process and i like being able to switch between rhythm tones ive designed live on stage.

It's also cool how Dino took that tone and made it his own -- detuning, different style, Ibby guitars, 7 strings, etc. Shows how you can take your favorite guitar guys tone and then make it into something originally yours.
I went with digital because it was cheaper. All the Tubes Amps have skyrocketed in price. It is part of the reason I use Solid State. The second reason is that the response is tighter. Also, they are easier to transport as far as not having to worry about damaging tubes. Plus, most of them, like Crate amp heads, are built like a tank. I drop one of them by accident and the thing still plays flawlessly.
Great interview, I love the evolution story of Dino’s rigs The photos of his line 6 rigs was sick too I had a flextoneii head back in the day , and I was stoked to be able to get the digimortal tone exactly
I have a katana 50, peavey piranha 6505 with orange micro cab and a pc. I still play old school more than anything. I have some good plug-ins but I'm 48 and I'm used to it. I will bypass a cab and go directly into a board quick though lol.
I guess the album that influenced me in similar regard is "Lonely House" by Grammatrain. The feedback, distortion, wah... I think Pete used a Rotovibe, moreover. That said, while I have numerous plugins on my laptop, I plan to buy an all tube Marshall amp later this year.
Great stuff, thanks! In my opinion, the factors that most affect this type of sound are: manual skills (some people are simply more skilled/gifted at picking than others), pick attack (+ pick type), pickup, properly strings (not too loose, not too tight, not too thick, not too thin ), guitar cab & speakers with wise mic placement. The latter two is very important. Good IRs work too. Obviously you need a high gain head (or digital stuff) and some boost but this can be achieved in several ways.
My reason to use digital is just because its so versitile, and nothing can match it for the value and price. Its nice to just have 1 unit to work with. I use a line 6 spider valve mk2 which is digital but has power tubes still.
The Johnson Millennium digital amps from back in the day were the best sounding imo. They no longer make them , so if you see one for sale I'd snatch it up.
I did the same! Line-6 is amazing. People used to look down on it. I made it work by removing one small band on frequency on my Eschatology recording. Not everyone could afford to record with miked Marshalls; plus, it was easy.
The majority of the sound comes from the speaker, the amp, pickups, and tone wood are minor variables that can be adjusted for just by moving the gain and eq knobs on your amp.
😂😂😂 it Happened at the Tower theater lol on my street ...69street Upper Darby last stop in Philly ;) I snuck in all the good shows from my back all and rehursels
I play a real amp yesterday for the first time and it was amazing . I cant put my finger on it but maybe the response. Definitely better to go digital live for control. You’ll get a flawless tone going through the mains . I used to hate him my sound man mic’ed my 900 dual reverb . Man do I miss that amp though.
Somehow I always thought Dina was using Mesa TriAxis, a Mesa Poweramp and 2 Mesa 2x12s in the 90ies. Pretty sure I read that in an interview late 90ies….
A lot of bands seem to get their equipment stolen in Philly lol. I remember seeing SOAD in Jersey back in 2012 and somebody stole one of Daron's SG's when they just did a show there. He was talking about it on stage asking people to keep a look out for it. He was pissed. And I've heard/read some other stories
The idea of traveling light makes a lot of sense, especially if you’re just a cover band making side money and don’t wanna get worn out hauling gear all the time.
I once knew a guy who boasted and bragged in the late '90s on my front steps about how he and his goons robbed Fear Factory downtown. That guy went to school with my brother and is WELL respected in a particular scene still day. I lost respect for that guy that day and never regained a shred of it for him. Amazing how that conduct gets praise and admiration in certain "circles." Pathetic really. Rock on, Dino.
what scene would that be? maybe he's the guy that robbed dino of his jcm. i loved that tone he had with it on obsolete. what a piece of shit you can be to steal that
I don't care what someone uses as long as it sounds good. Sometimes they provide a method I hadn't thought of and so I incorporate it. Dino's always been a stand up guy and solid guitarist. Imho, Demanufacture is still the best album
“Pitchshifter” the first (3 albums) they wrote were out of this world and were ahead of Their time as well but also one of a kind unique. Fear factory is similar to Pitchshifter but FF is more fast paced and Djent’ish. I also love the fact that FF did a cover of “Pitchshifter” wit the song called, “Landfill” and they did a badass job doing that cover song. Everyone reading this should listen to Pitchshifter ! (Industrial, Submit and Desensitized) are their best albums hands down… after they made those I really thought they fell off big time and went to a whole new style that sucked ass lol but real metal heads know about their first 3 albums without a doubt.
saw an interview that said during demanufacture sessions they were struggling to get the sound, and the guitarist from bad brains let him use one of his cabs and there was the sound
@@czdot yeah! I've been experimenting for years trying to get the tone but i could never get close with the IRs i had available. I guess we'll never know the exact signal chain. Also, they are easier to transport as far as not having to worry about damaging tubes. Plus, most of them, like Crate amp heads, are built like a tank. I drop one of them by accident and the thing still plays flawlessly.
Great interview, I love the evolution story of Dino’s rigs
The photos of his line 6 rigs was sick too
I had a flextoneii head back in the day , and I was stoked to be able to get the digimortal tone exactly
I have a katana 50, peavey piranha 6505 with orange micro cab and a pc. I still play old school more than anything. I have some good plug-ins but I'm 48 and I'm used to it. I will bypass a cab and go directly into a board quick though lol.
So...Dino is basically explaining how the machine took over his rig.
I totally get it and especially for metal it makes sense. The irony though that all of their stuff is war against the machines is not lost in me
Great interview
Dino looks great!
Great interview. Dino rules 🤘
I guess the album that influenced me in similar regard is "Lonely House" by Grammatrain. The feedback, distortion, wah... I think Pete used a Rotovibe, moreover. That said, while I have numerous plugins on my laptop, I plan to buy an all tube Marshall amp later this year.
Really nice guy and some interesting foresights on his part.
Thanks so much for the video
The Johnson Millennium digital amps from back in the day were the best sounding imo. They no longer make them , so if you see one for sale I'd snatch it up.
I did the same! Line-6 is amazing. People used to look down on it. I made it work by removing one small band on frequency on my Eschatology recording. Not everyone could afford to record with miked Marshalls; plus, it was easy.
Special band, Dino is my hero 🤘
Laptopcore is savage. I will use this word forever now.
in a weird way it doesn't sound condescending
The majority of the sound comes from the speaker, the amp, pickups, and tone wood are minor variables that can be adjusted for just by moving the gain and eq knobs on your amp.
Love this amp sim !!!
Hell yeah! Cant wait to check it out
😂😂😂 it Happened at the Tower theater lol on my street ...69street Upper Darby last stop in Philly ;)
I snuck in all the good shows from my back all and rehursels
I still use my Flextone II HD Line 6 for the past 20 years. They rule.
Pretty sure I read that in an interview late 90ies….
my line 6 bass pods are quintessential to my sound and set up
Jose is the guy who modified the amp for Dino. He also did for Steve Vai
Dino, Dimebag and Kirk Windstein are some of the 3 artists who played or play solid state amps
Totally get his Points
Love this guitarist. I wanna another divine herecy album
Rumor is they are writing it. Sick line up too!
I've been using that EXACT head and cab for years. Too bad it too just got stolen. At least I got one of three guitars back.
Please make the Disruptor amps as a Kemper profile pack. 🙏
I always used amp, then went digital for some years, now I use amp+digital and the combination is wild.
Awesome fellow
Philadelphia - that explains all .
This is all cool but the most interesting part of this whole clip is the speaker cab he doesn't talk about at all.
tone secret probably
saw an interview that said during demanufacture sessions they were struggling to get the sound, and the guitarist from bad brains let him use one of his cabs and there was the sound
I asked dino years ago and apparently its a Mesa 4x12 with V30s, miced with SM57
@@Osoch you know what? That doesn't surprise me. Everyone... Drop in that Glenn Fricker's V30 IR and let's go. 😀
@@czdot yeah! I've been experimenting for years trying to get the tone but i could never get close with the IRs i had available.
I guess we'll never know the exact signal chain. The tone changes a lot even between speakers within the same cab, the mic placement and angle, the preamp, all that influences the tone that's why it's so hard to get it
I would go digital for the zenith passage tone or rings of Saturn tone
To be fair, if there's one band who has a genuine excuse to use digital instead of analogue, it's Fear Factory!
Never thought I’d hear this many people recommending digital. What a time to be alive.
I use Blackstar amps tube or digital they sound great
His best, most brutal tone was during the Demanufacture-Obsolete era.
Nowadays he sounds too clean, not heavy at all.
I still have my flextone II after I heard Dino used it on Brujerizmo. I use digital plug in now, but my home Amp is my flextone. The distortion is really dated but the clean effects are rich and excellent
Got the flextone and use it ALL the time
