I don't know if I'd call the bear traps jump scares, but some of the stuff that happens at night could certainly be considered jump scares, as well as 2 different points in the intro, so the devs aren't exactly true to their word. It's still a great game though.
@@kristina80ification they're not exactly jumpscares as they happen naturally and don't come out of nowhere. An enemy breaching your door isn't a jumpscare.

Anything less than full price is a crime, it's a steal at $15. The devs should be immensely proud of themselves for making something that actually terrorizes the player in intervals and instills a near constant state of dread. Minds make good games, not money.
The creators of this game said they only wanted to put things in this game that would make themselves scared shitless. They don't even watch horror movies cause they're too scary.
What these devs did is sheer brilliance for the horror community. I've been spreading this game as much as a I can and I've bought it for at least 5 people or so, convinced my brothers to buy it aswell
Darkwood is a masterpiece of the genre. I have played a lot of horror games and many struggle to reach this level of atmospheric horror and deep storytelling. I hope you great people will release more games in the future :) !
As I've said in a different post, the intro has jump scares, and some of the stuff that happens at night, the fungus creature popping up and trying to engulf you, or the lights being forced off and ghosts attacking you out of nowhere, just to give a couple examples, are certainly jump scares, no matter what the devs say. This is still a good game though, don't get me wrong.
"no intentional jumpscares". is what the devs said this is just subjective. they dont scare you with loud sounds or things popping up in your face, wich is the definition of a jumpscare. wich would break immersion in this game. and for that alone i love this game. as it basicly sucks you in and doesnt let you go
what a FANTASTIC compilation, this game has so much replay ability. I've loved it since the moment I've known about it and continue to take inspiration (and chills) to this day.
15+ playthroughs and I still can't stop playing. For people debating whether to purchase or not, do NOT wait any longer to dive in. My recommendation is to play normal mode first and explore the characters and their dark history and connections to each other, as well as the game mechanics of course. Just when you *think* you know who somebody is or what their agenda is....you find incriminating evidence that would say otherwise. Nuclear holocaust ? Horrible pathogen released by the government accidentally (or on purpose) ? Nature reclaiming the earth ? Extraterrestrial come to earth with a vengeance ? You be the judge. This game ROCKS
I got distracted, as I was saying ..play normal mode first to get a grip, and do your best not to die. In normal mode you can retrieve your corpse with any possessions you dropped, however going back to do so can mean death AGAIN, leading you to a vicious cycle of not being able to retrieve your items at all and repeated deaths. Nightmare mode is the best as death is permanent. Nightmare mode adds so much tension and extra fear to the game and you must put thought into every action you do. Do not wander around the woods unprepared..

I was playing this this morning (the only time of day I can play a game so scary) and I found myself in an extremely life like scenario. I was walking around an unfamiliar area, constantly turning and analyzing my surroundings while walking straight, and I came upon a house. I was so focused on not being killed by something coming from the trees, I stepped right in a bear trap. This is something that would most certainly happen in real life, but NEVER in a first person horror game made today. SO Immersive, great job devs!
I was playing during early access and this game is the scariest thing I've played for a long time. The atmosphere is rock solid, the graphics and effects are top notch, and the story is compelling. The saddest thing is that for chapter 2 I was so used to the game (having played it every major update) that it wasn't that scary anymore, except for the burning villagers. What spooked me the most of all was finding the bell in the Banshee nest, and knowing that "one" of my allies could have killed me long ago, but for some reason did not. Heck, I wish I could forget everything I know about Darkwood and play it again, just so I could have that feeling of pure fear. 10/10 would sit in their run-down shack babbling about the noises outside until dawn.
Banshhe is so scary... but there is 1 thing that even worse - their lair in 2th chapter.... .brrrrrr ony when you got pump shotgun and at least 10 shells in pocket you feel some safety :) and "scream" ability. And molotov's...A LOT OF MOLOTOV'S! P.S. : many thanks for such awesome scary masterpiece... So many secrets, so few time and ammo =)
While Markiplier always steals the show, I still can't get over this part. This guy says the game isn't scary and then screams as if the game said "No u!" to him. lol 2:11
My favorite top down/pixel and horror game ever since, a masterpiece. I would buy a Darkwood version thats open world and you can plant food and get water and survive monsters as well, a randomly generated world with no story to follow, just surviving that would be incredibly awesome!
is yes. very scary, but somehow also bearable for a scaredy-cat like me to play. and stays scary throughout, scare stays fresh. and scare level waxes and wanes, so your not at max fear constantly like deadspace, but still get your heart racing periodically (every night(... not like that)).
I LOVE THIS VIDEO, AND UR GAME, like HOLY shit man its so good at the atmosphere its generating, i love especially how its not just a jumpscare fest(BUT as we saw, does contain good conditions to create some, that are not too bad tho) and just such a good experience

I would love to explore a different area entirely , cities with zombies....lost in a desert with mutants, I just want to play in this universe and have a buddy with me. This game is by far the best horror/survival game ever made. At first i wasnt to sure about it based off of the overhead / birdseye view. It only took a few min of play before i understood why the view at this angle. The content is truly scary and feeds off of the fear of whats just behind your back, out of view.The game is amazing. I hope you guys make an addon or a Darkwood 2.
Bought this on early access ages ago and am so happy that it finally got released and received good reviews. Still have to finish it myself, and am really looking forward to it.
I feel like Markiplier's reactions were pretty fake. I'm not saying this video was staged, I'm saying Markiplier's reactions to any game nowadays feels very stiff and staged. That being said, this game looks pretty fun. I remember seeing it years ago, long before it was ready for release, and it looks so much better.
I just picked this game up the other day for pc and ive put hours into it. I have to say it is awesome! Absolutely thrilling! the atmosphere is perfect, the design is super cool. I love it alot. The only other games that made me focus in crippling tension, heart pounding, and pits sweating this much were maybe the deadspace and outlast series... To hang with them without scripted jump scares (that dont get you anymore after the first playthrough) in a top down is really amazing. I cant wait to beat it and play through again on nightmare difficulty to really test my mettle!

I'm playing this game right now, and while it is genuinely scary and has an amazingly crafted atmosphere, I've never screamed or jumped out of my chair like these reaction video makers. They do this on purpose to get views. Not knocking this brilliant game............but I can't stand these people.

The only time I honestly was scared 2 death, was my first encounter with the centipede men.
