Yes, they are required in the lazy river (Loggerhead Lane). In this one Roa's Rapids they're not allowed. I have videos of both of them on my RUclips channel.

how does it compare to the river at volcano bay?
Slightly faster and more powerful. I enjoy the one at Volcano Bay much more, and the scenery at Volcano Bay is unbeatable.
