The funny thing is that he has often stated that he has no clue what he is doing with his voice most of the time. But anyways...
The guy is a musical genius.
He can compose and arrange really well. He sings and Screams like it's no challenge at all and he can actually shred all of our faces of, if he wants to. But he doesn't overdo it like many other guitarists that need to show off their skills in each and every song. He just doesn't do it. And that's what musicality means. I just love that guy's work.

    • @Duncan_Idaho_Potato
      @Duncan_Idaho_Potato 6 лет назад +49

Devin has a huge catalog covering everything from "extreme metal" (Strapping Young Lad) to so-called "Space Country" ( Casualties of Cool) and all sorts of progressive rock/metal and even some stuff that could be called "new age" (you know, like Enya and Yanni). As for his guitar playing, he can shred pretty well, but rarely chooses to do so. In fact, there's a video on RUclips of him shredding like mad while simultaneously talking about how shredding is meaningless unless it's musical and serves the song. He's easily one of the most underappreciated metal musicians of the 21st century, so far.

Its definitely something he's grown into. If you look at his really early strapping young lad stuff, later venues in tours his voice sounds tired. Its seems liek as he's got older he's got better at preserving his voice.

Yeah he sometimes sounded miserable, like when singing Detox at the Hultsfred show. And in many interviews he spoke about how he's tired of singing every night, hoping his voice holds up etc. He may also have gotten a much better lifestyle now, with no substance anymore.

He'd have to look at live, most likely. I'm only vaguely familiar with Trivium, but normally metal guys get excited on stage and forget everything they ever learned about technique (if they ever learned). It's easy to blow your voice out live, and even more so when the stage volume is too loud instrumentally and your vocals are buried.

You're into metal and haven't heard of Strapping Young Lad? You've GOTTA start there - it's kind of crazy, SYL's 'extreme metal' is really the foundation for all of his solo work that followed. You wouldn't hear SYL and expect that it's the same guy behind the music; but that's Devin, his variety of rock is closer to the variety of Mike Patton(albeit, without all of the non-rock that that fuckin' psycho does as well, LOL) than probably anyone else in metal. Pay attention to his guitar playing too; legitimately one of the BEST guitarists in metal - IT'S NOT FAIR
BTW, Steve Vai picked him up right out of high school to be his lead singer - yea, that's fuckin' Devin Townsend's life...
Finally, this is the one that really got me into Devin Townsend, and it's still my favorite song by him. It isn't as 'impressive' as a lot of his other stuff, but the actual writing itself, he just nails that slow, chunky, heavy sound that I'm such a sucker for
      ruclips.net/video/PYd44KwBOaA/видео.html
It's off of 'Devin Townsend Band's "Accelerated" album - fantastic album, that was my starting point, then I went back to SYL and followed his work in order(it's fascinating to listen to him evolve as a musician over ~25 years)

I don't think there was anything particularly "ironic" about SYL. His audience wasn't "not getting it" because he meant it. He was an Angry Young Man (Fooling Yourself... ayyy Styx). But then he grew older, his self-destructive lifestyle caught up to him, and he stopped meaning it. And then he had to stop making the music.
I think the silliness now is way of coming to terms with that side of himself. He views all that old aggression as silly/misplaced/unnecessary now, but still enjoys the experience of it (ie. the aggressive music that results) so his music becomes self-ironic.

Devin is actually Manic Depressive and he uses humor to deal with much of his anxiety. His music is also very reflective of this. He has had multiple bands and projects, from his extreme Metal band Strapping Young Lad to his soothing Country Music project, Casualties Of Cool, and also his humorous one time Fake Punk band, Punky Brewster.

Back in the 90's, Devin visited a vocal coach called Roger Love, who told him, based on the way he was screaming, that it wouldn't be sustainable and Devin's voice would be gone in a couple of weeks if he went on tour.
But 25 years and 30 Albums later, he's still doing it :)

To go back to the coach, Devin talks about him in his book Only Half There; well worth a read!

Also, from what I've seen, until very recently his analysis have been about pop music, so this could hopefully help explain metal to a wider audience, so that they can see that it's not "just noise" and maybe get more people interested in this amazing genre 😊

As a voice teacher I would be beyond intrigued and excited if you would do a cradle of filth song. If it needs to be a live video I'd suggest the live in Nottingham concert I believe it's from 1999. To have a professional break down his voice would be awesome. Extremely shrill high notes that I could never understand.

Wow. You’re growing so fast and it is obvious why. One vid and I was hooked. As you hear so often, the way you explain and/or critique is clear and not derogatory.
I have a request if you don’t mind. And no pressure if it isn’t done as you have your own agenda along with thousands of others... Sam Tsui - Born This Way cover by Lady Gaga. He’s not as popular as a lot of other artists that have been covered, but his voice sounds great to me. I would be interested in your review to see if you agree or if the production of Kurt Schneider has a weighted value to the sound. Thank you very much for what you do and sharing that talent with all of us.
