    Whoa!! So much information.....My mind is blown on all of these options.....I'm in VA.....We have to file a notice of intent to homeschool each year & turn in yearly progress test scores or assessments. Bless You!! I can't imagine trying to figure all of this out & choosing an option.I'm sure this information is so helpful to CA parents.

    What is the best method of homeschooling for my child if I do not wish to keep up with the vaccine schedule.

    • @PepperandPine
      @PepperandPine  7 лет назад +1

      Hi Joselyn, it's best to talk about vaccine options with your pediatrician first. If your pediatrician and you decide against the recommended vaccine schedule and you want more flexibility, the best way is to file an affidavit with the state of California at the State Department of Education website (The CHN website will walk you through it www.californiahomeschool.net/how-to-homeschool/establishing-your-psa/). If you wish to have other options, you can check private schools and see if they accept waivers. Private schools do not have the same oversight as public schools, but they may require vaccines as part of the school's policy. Lastly, you could try off-site charter schools (on-site charter schools are required to have vaccines), as they still accept waivers as long as students are not in a classroom setting. Laws and policies change often as do school's policies, so this information is up to date to the best of my knowledge as of April 2017. And of course, I am not recommending one school option over another, nor am I recommending a medical path for you and your children. I'm providing information as to the current choices you have :) I hope the best for you and your children!!

    Hey there! Thank you for making such informative videos on a regular basis. I know that you live in California but I was wondering if you are aware of any other states that offer instructional funding through public charter schools. I've been trying to do my research and so far it looks like this is an option unique to California. If I'm wrong about this, do you know where I might find a list of participating states? Thank you!

    • @PepperandPine
      @PepperandPine  8 лет назад +1

      Denali, I think it is unique for California so far. I think either Washington or Oregon might have a similar program, but I can't say for sure. Texas has brick and mortar charter schools that have special programs like art or foreign language. I wonder if other states could set up the same system.
      -Hana

    • @denaliwhitford4495
      @denaliwhitford4495 8 лет назад

      Hana, thanks for clarifying. Instructional funding is certainly an attractive option for people looking for financial relief from homeschooling expenses. Maybe we can look forward to more programs like the ones in California as the Trump administration makes changes. One can only hope.

    • @PepperandPine
      @PepperandPine  8 лет назад

      There's been a lot of opposition to the school funding and voucher plans. For us in CA who benefit from the charter program, we are seeing success and financial relief. I'm not sure what the national ramifications of such programs would do to the public school system except I know that those of us how homeschool here, do so to homeschool, not to receive funding. Funding is an amazing perk, but not the reason. I hope you find a system that works for you...or you could move to CA ;)

      My sister lives in California and I don't know how she manages to be so far away from the family. I don't think I could pull it off. Though since my husband and I are so set on homeschooling when the time comes (we only have one 6 month old daughter at the moment), I can't help but look at programs like yours and hope that they catch on. Of course, California is a unique state in many of its policies. Being a registered nurse I have considered moving to California before if only because it is the only state in America (and it's actually the only place in the developed world) with mandated nurse to patient ratios. Considering the world-wide staffing crisis within acute clinical settings like hospitals and nursing homes, that particular law is amazingly helpful toward ensuring quality healthcare. Anyway, I'm sorry, I sort of got off topic there.

    • @PepperandPine
      @PepperandPine  8 лет назад +2

      Very interesting about the nurse to patient ratio. That's new to me, actually I never thought to think about it, but I'm glad for the policy. Sounds good for patients and nurses. I applaud you for looking into homeschooling when your child is still so young. Well done! Your daughter is lucky to have you :)

      i live in California and my daughter is 5 years old. I want to start homeschooling through the private school PSP, this is my first time. can you tell me which are the pros and cons with this system?. after the year my daughter is going to have to take a test for the state or something? what about the vaccination with this option?. thank you for the information. :D

    • @PepperandPine
      @PepperandPine  8 лет назад

      Hi Christina. Welcome to homeschooling! The biggest pro in my opinion regarding PSPs is the freedom to do what you like with respect to schooling. The type of PSP you choose will determine the cost of the program and the choices you have within the program. For instance, you can have a PSP that provides no services at all, yet the cost of the program is minimal. The benefit of going this route is that you are a member of the school and they file you as a teacher and student so you don't have to file your own paperwork. Some PSPs will have curriculum options, field trips and more, but the cost will go up to compensate for these services. The cons are that you have to pay out of pocket for your curriculum and classes and often, because the members are spread out, it isn't easy to connect with other homeschoolers in that PSP.

    We are thinking about moving to California. My son is already homeschooled by me. our son is mild autistic. what about the vaccination. He hasn't gotten shots for 5 years now and hasn't even gotten sick since.

    • @PepperandPine
      @PepperandPine  8 лет назад +1

      Hello! The new vaccination laws make it difficult to get exemptions if you want to attend site-based public school. Also, a lot of private school require them; and they can because they have no oversight from the state, so they are free to require vaccinations for school admission (some didn't honor exemptions even when that was an option). The exceptions are if you homeschool independently by filing your own paper work, or homeschool through an 'umbrella' school (this would be the private school option which caters to homeschoolers and doesn't offer much, but doesn't require much, fees are minimal), or homeschool through an off-site public school like a charter or district school. Another exception is going through a private school like Waldorf because it is in their philosophy not to vaccinate, so they don't require it. I think Montessori schools also honor waivers or at least don't require the vaccinations (but I only called one school). I hope that helps you on your journey! And welcome to California!! Where are you coming from?

      i don't know and I hated it and my mom hated it! why we hated it was 1st moms point of view. the first year my sister was on it that they gave her this very confusing calendar to fallow. Year around is split up into tracks. basically the whole school is not in school at the same time! everyone is spilt up into 4 tracks. so A track may be in school and b,c, and d is off and keeps going. My mom couldn't figure it out half the time. my sister missed a 2weeks before the a sw came to her door asking why my sister wasn't at school. Also she had soo much time off of school that it cost a lot to send her to daycare!
      I hated it! I was in high school when the district made all elementary and middle school year around. So the rule is if you have a sibling in elementary or middle they would put them on D track. D track has the same schedule as the high school! So if I had the day off so did she. So I had to babysit all the time. Also the time school starts and ends are the same so my mom would have to drop my sister off first really early in the morning and she would have to be picked up first. If my sister was left at the school too long the school would yell at my mom! So my mom put my sister on homeschooling in the 3rd grade. I stayed in traditional high school because I was in to many activities.

      Oh wow! What an ordeal for you all. I have heard of this system of year round school with different tracks, but I haven't heard it from the anguish of parents and kids. I hope things are better now.

      yes she doing good on homeschooling she is in high school now. oh I forgot to say this but studies show that year around students don't score as high in state test vs.. traditional because they are in school less

    • @PepperandPine
      @PepperandPine  8 лет назад

      Interesting study. I thought the days of school had to be the same. I've heard that there is benefit in forgetting information and then learning it again. Ah well...we all manage some how to make it out the other end okay :)

      Rezaun Karim I would suggest community college for two years and transfer to university after that. You can also get your GED. But before you do anything, I would suggest you talk with your high school guidance counselor at your old high school. There may be options you don’t know about.

      Just finished listening to the podcast, nicely done!! I'll be forwarding that to my homeschool group :) Cathy Duffy just came up in a thread recently. I understand there is quite a difference from state to state when it comes to homeschooling. I think you'll agree that we are very fortunate that homeschooling is legal in all 50 states. And many thanks to the trail blazers who paved the way for us to homeschool today. They certainly sacrificed a lot for us. I'm glad that was mentioned in the podcast.
