  • After Russian jets harassed an American MQ-9 Reaper drone for better than two hours, the drone went on to take out Usamah al-Muhajir, an ISIS leader in eastern Syria.
    According to some reports, the weapon used in the airstrike was America's secretive "Ninja Bomb," or a Hellfire missile packing six deployable 18" blades somewhat officially known as the AGM-114 R9X.
    Here's an overview of this unusual weapon and why it's so useful for counter-terror operations.

It’s hard to imagine how much blood is in a human body but these things give you a pretty good idea. If I was next to someone who got hit by one of these I would have wished it was just a normal hellfire because it would absolutely scar you for life.

      A hellfire's maximum speed is Mach 1.3, I'm also sure its engine components are thousands of degrees Fahrenheit upon impact.
      Basically what I'm saying is, if you have a white-hot rocket, weighing 99 pounds, colliding with a person you're standing next to at over the speed of sound, you would absolutely be scarred for the rest of your life; which would be shorter than anyone's ability to perceive...

    It would be interesting to know the composition and design of the blades. Considering that the blades are single use, they are probably simple yet extremely tough 1095 steel sealed inside a very well lubricated mechanism. Sealed and covered in a heavy coating of oil, corrosion wouldn't be an issue.

    • @j.f.fisher5318
      @j.f.fisher5318 Год назад +4

      The standard price for a hellfire is $150K, so whatever steel is used is an insignificant fraction of the total cost. And 1095 isn't actually all that tough at 10J Charpy toughness, 525 MPa yield strength. It's fine for relatively cheap tools and stuff, but compared to serious high-alloy steels such a 3V tool steel 113J Charpy toughness at 58 Rc (pretty good but still common for real swords as opposed to knives) and 1600 MPa yield strength it certainly isn't "extremely" anything. Or even high end stainless steel like 455 or 13-8, both about 50J Charpy and 1400 MPa yield strength depending on temper. Incidentally, Titanium isn't all that impressive in comparison to the best steels, with the most exotic alloy I could info for (Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al) only being about on par with the high-end stainless pound-for pound with 30J Charpy and 940Mpa yield and I'd be concerned about its tendency to rapidly work harden (was researching a post apoc story making armor from scavenged materials), and the more common high end Ti-6Al-4V being a bit worse and lesser alloys going down from there.

Would these be something that could be re-engineered from the surviving pieces or even worse reused. I'm sure the speed in which it's impacting ensures a relatively good chance that they're useless in all cases but... Me being sure and me actually knowing are two different things. And while the technology is 30 to 40 years old, as we have seen recently many opponents don't even have that yet... I bring this up because without the explosives I'm certain these components have a more likely chance of survival

    What right does the US have to be taking out the religious leaders of another nation?

    • @liamcore7203

      They have the exact same right the ISIS leader used in throwing gays from tall buildings to their deaths, the right of street justice i.e. the best killer will dictate and write the history. Same as it has always been and always will be everywhere in the f$cking universe as universal laws dictate survival of the fittest by adaptation to the environment, not equality.

    If a leader wants to surround himself with family then we should take all of them out with him. Wouldn't want revenge to be the reason for the perpetuation of violence. If you can get the weapon to within 3 feet of the target, pretty sure you can find a window to use a regular hellfire that would negate any collateral. So really? Your comments contradict and contain no logic.
