  • Could this be a kinder way of gentling a mustang? This is a conversation I feel every adopter needs to hear! I interviewed Jim Masterson, founder of the Masterson Method, which is an integrative form of bodywork. We'll talk about how it works, but specifically discuss the impact it can have on mustangs - both in their bodies, but also in the gentling process.
Jim began his work his work with top equine competitors on the US hunter-jumper circuit, using bodywork to improve performance of the horses. His methods have now spread to the average horse owner interested in helping their horse to feel better, while building trust and improving connection. His book and DVD, Beyond Horse Massage, has sold over 70,000 copies worldwide and he currently has over 500 certified practitioners worldwide.

OMG! This was an amazing interview! Please don't ever take this video down. Such good information. I particularly love his comment about how humans think if sometimes isn't working they push harder, but the answer is actually to soften. If everyone who works with horses, and Mustangs in particular would do this, horses would be so much happier and subsequently, humans would be happier too.

The method is just fantastic. Heard about it two years ago, bought two books, watched some Videos on YT and start practicing. The response of my horse is just amazing. I love it. Greetings from Germany.

Great interview Brita! My mustang did NOT want bodywork to start and it's been so rewarding and fascinating to slowly peel the onion and release his body. He'll step away often to let me know he'd rather not so I know to lessen the work. But wow talk about knots, dents, damage. He was a stallion for 6 yrs in the wild and there are battle scars - LITERALLY!

This was so fascinating, interesting and informative! I've seen some of his YT videos and i don't recall him giving so much verbal information. I have an OTTB that receives regular chiropractic and MM treatments and it has made a great difference in his physical and mental health! I'm glad we have these methods to help our equines.

I was so excited about this! If you ever get a chance to go to a seminar of his, I highly recommend it! I met him at the equine affaire and went to all 4 that he taught. He gives so much valuable information and is a super nice guy as well!

Great interview. I've subbed to his channel when you mentioned him and his method in another video. I have a corgi so I'm interested in seeing how these techniques work with her.

That's awesome! I haven't yet tried on my dog yet, but I've been practicing on the herd here. I did Theodore yesterday, and it's Jaeger's turn today! :)

Great question on the drag line and hard tying. Our pickup for our yearling mustang would not halter and at the time I was bummed, but now I realize if we get another, I will definitely not have it haltered. We also do not hard tie and that was great confirmation to continue that.

Yes!! It's so common, and everyone has their own opinions on why or why not. I hoped asking a bodywork would provide some really helpful information so people could better inform their decision. Thank you for sharing that ! :)

My one issue with not hard tying a horse is what happens ifnyou lose custody of that horse and they sell to someone who does hard tie? What happens when as an adult that horse sets back and finally feels the full pressure and panics?
I agree with not hard tying to teach them to tie, but all horses should have the chance to feel the pressure of they lean against a hard tied rope (not necessarily setting back, just taking a step back and going "ah, there's no give, Ill stand')

Thank you so much for this! I saw the link about this video on another Mustang video you did. HOW could I not know about this??? I have been into chiro for horses for almost 20yrs. Also own a BEMER mat since 2017. Love seeing my mare yawn...because I know she's releasing tension. I will definitely be looking into his YT channel, and try it out on my Mustang mare I've owned for the last 16yrs, since she was a 2yo.☺

It would have been nice if he had shown him using this on a horse. All we heard was him talking.

Yes, believe me, that would be a dream! I know how helpful it is to have a visual as well, but it is quite a bit more challenging on the back end than you might expect.
I don't own the rights to video of him working (check out his channel to see his methods!). Producing content of him working with mustang would be very costly and I would need financial backing from somewhere. I'm just 1 person. Let me know if you’d like to be a sponsor to make that happen 😉
As is, I already paid $150 out of my own pocket to make this video happen (had to purchase zoom to have a full length interview). I did that because I believed the insight and knowledge he had to share was so valuable and I want more people to hear it! And I think the people who are willing to listen will find that. 😊
But yes, the message would go further with higher production! Maybe someday! 🤞😃
