I passed my test on friday and went on the M25 on Saturday. I was scared at some point, but God was there for me. Tips: use a good car and have enough petrol on your car, check mirrors always, watch upcoming cars, be alert, don't take no drugs or alcohol before you drive. I'm so proud of myself. I made it!!!!
Agreed about motorway driving being waaaay easier than in town. I live in London and work in Slough, motorway all the way A316-M25-M4. I find this drive so much less stressful than driving anywhere in London, both inner and even suburbs. there is just so much less going on or that could go wrong on a motorway. Obviously, if something goes wrong on a motorway, the end result is much higher to be very bad than at slower speeds in town, but you just have to stay alert and vigilant. Thanks for this video.
This is made me so much less nervous on driving on the motorway! I have to drive on it on Monday, so I was absolutely bricking myself! But thank you so much, these little tips have really prepared me, as you literally get taught nothing when you past your test. Been driving a year now, but still I had no idea about motorways! Cheers:)
Bro, not afraid to admit I was terrified of motorways but today I decided to get on it with your advice and ended up doing 400km to see a friend. Didn't take me that long to learn (I drive an Audi TT quattro btw :) )Thank you.
I’ve watched your videos for a while now and they have helped me pass my driving test and this has just helped me drive on the motorway for the first time on my own. Thank you
for info, overtaking on the left is not actually illegal. its discouraged and if done erratically you could be charged with driving without due care but the highway code does not prohibit it
Good advice. I would add, when overtaking actually overtake. Too many drivers pull alongside a vehicle then match their speed. This often causes long delays for following vehicles.
If everybody was to keep the gap you had in front especially in lane one it would leave an insufficient distance for merging traffic. if for some reason a car in front had to break hard and you distracted for any reason, ie, changing your radio, checking your speed, looking at your passenger in conversation, checking your side view mirror etc you would have no chance of avoiding a rear end collision. Also it is not illegal to overtake on inside lane whether traffic is slow moving or not.
Undertaking at speed is considered as careless or dangerous driving, if you don't believe in this try it on the rare occurence that you may come across a police traffic officer, undertaking on congested routes where traffic is slow moving and the lanes move at different speeds is considered ok though constant lane changing in these circumstances may again attract the attention of the police.
simgorm are you saying the driver who is legally undertaking at 70mph a slower moving vehicle that is lane hogging at 50mph will be stopped and charged with dangerous or careless driving? You may not know this but it is a criminal offense to lane hog. Can you show me where it states that in the Highway Code?
simgorm it is not illegal however it does raise eyebrows because it means someone isn't abiding by the rules E.g the driver in the left lane is speeding or the driver in the middle/right lane Is lane hogging or driving under the speed limit
Very handy video. Passed my test 2 days ago (first time with one minor!), thanks for all the help from previous videos and exceptional timing for this one for me!
Generally excellent, excellent comments. Merging onto a highway is almost the only time I use a lot of accelerator. 02:48: "Black BMW slowed a bit too much", I note that they were maintaining a safe following distance.
I've always found urban and city driving much more stressful and hazardous than motorway driving, although motorway driving is more fatal if an accident does occur. Although they don't incorporate motorways in driving lessons they do teach dual carriage way use, which has the same basic principals as a motorway. The most dangerous types of roads are rural A and B roads.
Thanks for this excellent film. The very first time I used the M4 motorway to journey to Wales, I stuck in the inside lane. I was surprised that so many drivers kept sounding their horns, angrily at me. Mind you, I might have been better off in a car rather than walking.
Don't forget, when joining a motorway, it is the vehicle on the motorway has the right of way!!be prepared to stop on the slip road if you cannot join the motorway due to heavy traffic!!
In most countries/states/provinces, only hogging the hammer lane is considered an offense. The middle lane exists as a THRU lane to avoid slow traffic in the right lane (or in the UK -- the LEFT Lane). The Ohio Turnpike (Interstates 76 and 80) was two lanes for the longest time, then a MASSIVE construction project took place 10-15 years ago, and now it's THREE lanes all the way across the state in both directions to better handle increased commercial traffic.
It's shit for us in Ireland we have tiny bits of motorways.. I am terrified to drive to England and I've been driving 3 years.. we've went on the ferry as foot passengers even tho I drive.. stupid
Agreed, although I think these days you can go on a motorway as a learner, but it has to be with a certified instructor so you can’t just go on with a parent or friend in the passenger seat. There are a lot of long dual carriageway stretches that are similar to motorways, so that’s really the best means of preparing for them, almost like riding a bike with stabilisers.
This is a comprehensive guide. The only problem is joining the motorway from the slip road. Some drivers won't let you. I nearly bumped into two lorries who refused to let me in.
Im British and lived in England for 25 years and never drove, I've always used public transport and while never driving on the road myself the rules flow of traffic obviously got into me, Long story short i met my now Wife and moved to the Us to be with her and had to learn to drive straight away my first motorway/ interstate drive was from Florida to North Georgia on I75 around 400 miles, Heading into Atlanta is literally insane parts of that motorway depending on where you enter can be up to 11 lanes of traffic and the slip roads curve and enter from everywhere then when you get past that and head north the roads rise up 5000 feet up into the mountains of Georgia North Carolina and Tennessee, I got threw in the deep end for sure, Yes its daunting at first and there will be sections on the motorway where everyone speeds up for a time for no apparent reason and that does raise the anxiety for a while but for the most part motorway driving to me is actually easier than normal driving the speed becomes relative after a short time and youll find yourself relax that being said the margin for error is obviously less but motorways don't exactly have hairpin turns .
A blind person would pass a driving test in Florida. The I4 is the most dangerous motorway/freeway in the US. The 192 is the most dangerous dual carraigeway/ highway. They cross each other in Orlando. 27% of vehicles registered in Florida are uninsured. The average driver drives like a zombie. From my experience driving there for many years I've noticed at least 50% of drivers are on their mobile phone while driving.
“Remember that overtaking on the left is illegal unless you are in slow traffic” can someone please elaborate on this as I do not get it? Does it mean that if you are in the left lane, then you are not allowed to overtake any vehicle in that lane at all unless if there’s traffic? The lane bit confuses when it comes to motorways.
He is talking pure rubbish. He is quoting Rule 268 of the Highway Code. But he doesn't seem to understand that it says you "Do not" rather than "Must Not" That makes it advice rather than law. He never read the Introduction and wording at the beginning of the booklet. It's clearly explained.

Nah it's not it should be impossible to undertake because if you are going at steady speed and you undertake a car in the middle lane then they are essentially in the wrong because they shouldn't be in the middle lane they should be in the slow lane so you can overtake them in the middle

You seem like a nice guy, but I analysed your video frame by frame against the painted road markers in Premiere Pro and you've got about a 0.67 second gap to the car in front (3:05:07 - 3:05:26). You even dismiss the highway code's 2 second rule *like you know better*. There's a HUGE difference between getting into bad habits while driving (distance is a problem in the UK) and endorsing them in a RUclips video to the masses. A recent study reported by the independent (source below) suggested reaction time could be as low as 1.5 seconds, funnily enough, the Department of Transport believed it to be 0.67 seconds. Let's say the study was exaggerated and the DoT is right. In your video just at the point you apply your brakes, you've already caught up to where the car in front of you was when the whole incident started. Thanks for the vid. Wanted to prep daughter before I take on 1st motorway session. Apart from your comment in the 2 second rule - “only a fool breaks the 2 second rule”.. Important and a very good checker. If everyone adopted that just imagine the reduced accidents alone from it….
I’m perfectly fine driving on the motorway, it’s getting on that I hate; especially in my instructors 1 litre. I’m going like 55 by the end of the ramp, and that’s with staying in 3rd until 4.5k rpm.
I like to approach the motorway as fast as possible pull straight into the third lane without indicating and then i like to flash the person infront into surrendering back to where they belong. Same goes for exiting, sometimes i like to leave it to the verry last second running over the hash markings and showering the wanker behind with gravel.
Wondering if it's really safer to just be on the left most lane as I have noticed I am forced to switch lanes more often due to slow moving trucks.. what thoughts ?
The worst bit of motorway driving is those truck drivers who just as you are about to overtake suddenly indicate and start to move expecting you to either just move out of the way or slow down.
So if I'm on the far right lane, and I wanna overtake, I'm guessing I can't go to the middle lane and overtake like that right. And only go towards the left if yer leaving right
Remember everyone keep your distance don't become the average driver in the UK 2 seconds is the minimum to stop in time in dry conditions, 4 seconds in rain/ground is wet and 20 seconds if the ground is ics
I wish people would just properly accelerate on sliproads. Really pisses me off when people dawdle down at 45-50mph, because merging at that speed is just so fucking dangerous. Depending on the sliproad, I can usually reach a good 60mph before joining.
Clarissa McPigeon Yes! Haha I hate those people. I used to move over for them but now I feel, if you cant get up to speed you deserve to be stuck on that slip road.
Had my second driving lesson today, had great fun! Still a bit hard to get the grips with the clutch when slowing down, but other than that it went well so far!
@@TheCookieSide you count when the car infront passes under a sign bridge until you also pass under it. I'd say it's probably more like 4 car lengths but each to their own.
Not always feasible to keep to the two second rule and will never be law. If a car moves to another lane, the two second rule would become to around a one second rule.
City driving is so much more stressful. Both for you and your car. The only time highway driving can be worse is if you're in bumper to bumper traffic. Clutch, 1st, creep, clutch, brake, neutral, clutch, 1st, creep... gets old reeeal quick.
Accelerating on the slip road up to speed of the motorway traffic: why do so many drivers find this such a difficult principle to grasp? The number of times I've been stuck behind someone on the slip road doing about 40mph.
Wouldn't recommend anyone but if you want some stress and tension then give it a go. Be prepared for endless unmanned roadworks, traffic jams, closed lanes, narrow lanes, huge trucks in huge numbers slowing your journey down and pray there's no road accidents.
I prefer the motorway to country roads with only two lanes with a national speed limit and lots of bends, now they are dangerous and something needs to be done. Tailgating, overtaking with oncoming traffic, overtaking on bends, it is insanely dangerous, even if you're the best driver and totally safe some other idiot will come along and do something stupid.
Where did that myth of being illegal to undertake come from? It's legal to pass on inside irrespective of speed. Very few Brits understand their own Highway Code, and this video is contributing to it.
I ended up accidentally taking the wrong exit for being in the wrong lane and not changing in time to where I wanted to go. Had to take a detour but still got there quickly. I noticed that BMWs seem to never be helpful... never giving way, never letting you go etc
You missed a bit. Too many times I have seen cars on the hard shoulder attempting to rejoin the traffic. Sitting still indicating and waiting for a gap. NO it is not like being parked in th high street. Use the hard shoulder to accelerate and rejoin the traffic when you have matched the speed. Similarly if you cannot safely join the motorway from the slip road. Use the hard shoulder, don't slam on the brakes.
Absolute nonsence saying overtaking on the left is illegal with exceptions. You can pass on the left irrespective of the speed in any of the lanes to your right.
The highway code states that you should only overtake on the left hand side unless you are in congested conditions where traffic is moving at similar speeds.
@@reetra2260 You are correct, that is what the HC says. But as it uses the word "should" rather than "must" it is only advisory wording and not law. It amazes me the amount of people don't know this.
Eq_NightGlider_ Anybody who says it's illegal to overtake on left, also called undertaking should read this. bikerandbike.co.uk/undertaking-is-not-illegal/
Things to learn: You'll be surprised by the number of older drivers who speed. You'll be surprised to know the number of younger drivers who are distracted by their phones.
This video is very helpful for beginners. This video should be played to everyone who have just passed their test! Btw, motorway driving is very easy, easier than driving on normal roads, you just need to make sure you are paying full attention at all times.
Do you drive yourself? Is it good advice to keep a one second gap from the vehicle in front as this "expert" has done? Is it good advice drive all the way around a hogger in lane 3 and back again instead of passing in the driving lane?
No you should carry on in the inside lane because if you pull out to the middle then the outside lane to overtake then cut across back to the inside lane when you've overtaken them that's classed as worse than undertaking.
Reece Jamson Very true. Even the most inexperienced drivers can master the motorways if you always keep your wits about you, remain alert to drivers around you, and make sure that you're in the appropriate lanes depending on which route you are taking. I find sat navs really helpful for motorways, just listen for when to exit/join the motorway , and you can the focus mainly on the driving
Reece Jamson Correct, some stretches of dual carriageway are almost identical to motorways and that is the reason driving tests should include them. Dual carriageway have pedestrians, cyclists, pedestrian crossings, traffic lights and more to look out for.
Dual carriageway if anything are more dangerous the lanes ain't as wide and when you have 20cars side my side bumper to bumper all going around a bend lol fun times
I got lost and ended up on the motorway on my first drive alone , I did considerably well as I made it home alive. Lol
Lol

It happened to me but I have been okay tbh 🤣

Clarissa McPigeon Yes! Haha I hate those people. I used to move over for them but now I feel, if you cant get up to speed you deserve to be stuck on that slip road.
Tip. If vehicle in front to not at suffcent speed to entre motorway keep well back and give to yourself time and space to excellerate.
Well they can say the same to people like you piss off onto the middle lane and let them merge easier lol
Or the clowns that get up to speed, then hit the BRAKES at the end of the ramp.
Had my second driving lesson today, had great fun! Still a bit hard to get the grips with the clutch when slowing down, but other than that it went well so far!
Good luck with the learning :)
ONLY A FOOL BREAKS THE 2-SECOND RULE. everyone MUST recognize that.
@@TheCookieSide you count when the car infront passes under a sign bridge until you also pass under it. I'd say it's probably more like 4 car lengths but each to their own.
@@TheCookieSide i know it's a joke. there was a youtube broadcast by highways england showing traffic officers counting...
Greg James it’s two second, not two car lengths, the gap varies depending on the speed
@@TheCookieSide if you do it for a while its becomes habit 😉
At the end of the day it's just simple physics to protect you
1st time ive seen a uk motorway moving .they are normally all jammed up with traffic jams and road works these days
Not always feasible to keep to the two second rule and will never be law. If a car moves to another lane, the two second rule would become to around a one second rule.
Fast lane is always blocked. Usual day on UK motorway...
Divergent Sanity not true
thank you so much man this is so useful x
City driving is so much more stressful. Both for you and your car. The only time highway driving can be worse is if you're in bumper to bumper traffic. Clutch, 1st, creep, clutch, brake, neutral, clutch, 1st, creep... gets old reeeal quick.
outro song is Rozz Dyliams & Misogi - Elsa
I try to keep a cap at lest 2 seconds behind a car and three in rain or poor visibility .
Nice video man, my driving test is today
Thank you man, good luck!
+Paynos I passed !!
Well done! Enjoy driving and stay safe :)
What do those white painted horizontal lines in the lane signify? eg .At 4.40
They're reference for the speed cameras on the gantry above
V good tips thank u so much for this video x🙏👍
Its illegal to undertake!
@@markw6369 You should read up on the Highway Code. Oh sorry, meant to say you "must" read up on the H C.
@@markw6369 Mavbe in your country, not in UK.
I ended up accidentally taking the wrong exit for being in the wrong lane and not changing in time to where I wanted to go. Had to take a detour but still got there quickly. I noticed that BMWs seem to never be helpful... never giving way, never letting you go etc
Luxury car drivers.
I've been learning to drive to be able to commute to uni .. about 15miles each way. any advice @paynos? :)
Chloe x Yes, get into the seat on the right
Btw what motor way M25? M4? M1?
Erm.. all of them.
ibiza gang gang
Absolute nonsence saying overtaking on the left is illegal with exceptions. You can pass on the left irrespective of the speed in any of the lanes to your right.
no you can't you fucking idiot haha
Correct. Only gobshites don't know the law.
@@reetra2260 The Highway Code proves you are an uneducated dickhead. haha🖕
Thanks for the tips mate. Also, you sound like Windows text to speech 😁
Hahaha no problems man. I get "you sound like Siri" a fair bit too
Paynos, whats the song at the beginning?
What’s the song playing at the beginning called?
But in my country it's illegal to drive on it, I think.
Since when has overtaking on the left become illegal?
Nineteen Sixteen it always has been, it's often called "undertaking" (rather than "overtaking")
Eq_NightGlider_ Anybody who says it's illegal to overtake on left, also called undertaking should read this.
bikerandbike.co.uk/undertaking-is-not-illegal/
Eq_NightGlider_ undertaking is also called overtaking of left and are legal manouvres.
What about bmws I have no indicators on my bmw
Thank you!
What would I do if I accidentally drove a slow moving vehicle down a motorway exit?
just rejoin the motorway at the roundabout if youve made a mistake
The only thing that ruins my motorway experience is lorry drivers who don't let you merge or join a lane
What's the outro song Alex?
Summer Shredding - Poseidon
Very informative but the narration was quite fast for me to catch up with the viewing comprehension.
Things to learn: You'll be surprised by the number of older drivers who speed. You'll be surprised to know the number of younger drivers who are distracted by their phones.
Damn dude, 2 GoPros, budget increase? ;);)
There's a GoPro on the dash and a DSLR stuck to the back window :P
Paynos DIY at it's best
If you drive a BMW you boot it down the slip road then straight into the 3rd lane
Thanks, good video.
So is it still illegal to undertake a lane hogger since the lane hogger is breaking the law first?
No you should carry on in the inside lane because if you pull out to the middle then the outside lane to overtake then cut across back to the inside lane when you've overtaken them that's classed as worse than undertaking.
No it's not illegal and hasn't been since 1972.
Also, never throw your droppings out of the window, put them in a bag and chuck em in the toilet later.
get in the fast lane do not come out, slow and middle are for lorries
V Good tips thank you 🙏
What is the Outro song ??!!
For those sayin its not part of test its better to learn and adjust yourself imagine a learner drivin 70mph...yh exactly
tomorrow mine first day on motorway, thanks
Just sit in the middle lane at 50mph, You'll be fine
why do people find it so hard ? I just don't understand it's only a road no different than a dual carriageway same speed just another lane
Reece Jamson it’s tents to be more traffic, a bit faster paced and such but yeah it’s very similar
Dual carriageway if anything are more dangerous the lanes ain't as wide and when you have 20cars side my side bumper to bumper all going around a bend lol fun times
