    I've recently gotten excited about pen turning, and actually ordered a lathe and some other tools yesterday.
    Lemme just say, I am even MORR excited about turning pens, now that I've seen your videos! You have really gotten my creative juices flowing about how to make unique stock to turn into beautiful pens!
    Thanks for that, and please keep those videos coming.

    Hi bob, I don't usually leave comments on videos but I have one piece of advice.you can choose weather or not to take it 😃. When I started making pens very regularly I decided to take the plunge and buy a blank drilling chuck and a mandrel saver, is the best use of money I've found so far other than my carbide tools and my lathe of course. Keep up the good work!
    -Oliver

    • @RJBWoodTurner
      @RJBWoodTurner  7 лет назад

      +Oliver Andrews Hello Oliver,
      I have those items but choose not to use them. When drilling on the lathe, the holes are sloppier. Plus with many of the blanks I make, their not square and don't lend themselves very well the the chuck application. Your idea is a good one it just doesn't work for me. Thank you very much for your comment I do appreciate it.
      Regards,
      Bob

    • @oliverandrewsracing
      @oliverandrewsracing 7 лет назад +1

      RJBWoodTurner at first when I started issuing the church I couldn't get any of the holes to drill straight, but then I tried drilling with a 1/4" split point drill bit then finishing up with the brad point 7mm and it is much easier to get rid of a good chunk of the material before Sui the brad point drillbit. Hope this can clear up what I was trying to say

      +Oliver Andrews Thank you for this follow up note Oliver, I appreciate the additional information. I will give this method a try and see how it works for me. I hope my previous reply wasn't too preachy, my wife say sometimes I don't answer with enough tact. It's tough to have a discussion with just words, you lose all the inflection and body language that tells the rest of the story.
      Regards,
      Bob

      RJBWoodTurner I don't want to push my ideas on you either! Everyone has their own way of getting to the end of the maze.im only 16 i make mistakes but I try my best not to. For a future video you should buy some polyester resin and some mica powder and cast some of your own acrylic blanks.i lived in the states for 6.5 years and took for granted the selection of resins and wood, now I've moved back to the uk it's pretty hart to find resin blanks for anything under £7

    If that's the only area that has glue on it, you can try knocking out the tube with a 1/4" knockout from the pen dis-assembly kit. I've had some poorly glued tubes come out that way.

    When I made my modified pen, it was very difficult to remove the mechanism. So I very lightly filed the ridges on the transmission until it stayed in, but was relatively easy to grip the slippery nib and pull it out. While testing the removability, don't insert all the way. You really don't have to worry about it staying together, because during use, the pen is being pressed together. I do like your new blank construction :>) Cheers

    • @RJBWoodTurner
      @RJBWoodTurner  7 лет назад

      +Steve Overton I've also found a small spacer the width of the center band helps. Otherwise you're putting another 1/4" of transmission in the upper tube.

    I attempted this once, ran into an insurmountable problem and have not gone back to it. The problem the two contrasting colored blanks I started with two radical different densities thus I was breaking blades left and right trying to saw through them. After 3 blades on the 2nd cut I gave up. When I get done playing with your other fantastic ideas I'll come back to this one. Dave.

    Bob, have you tried to soak your veneers? May be beneficial in assembly and the water will just evaporate and the glue should hold tight and strong as equal as if done dry. I would like to try this out in the spring time (unheated shop up here), I will try just straight cuts vice your sine wave, to see if the pieces match up better. It is a wonderful abstract look.
    Thanks for taking your time making your video for us to view!

    Just a thought! IF you were able to start with HDPE tubes, then CA glue wouldn't stick to them. However I strongly suspect that they'll need their centres drilled out. From I've seen locally, they may be available in the right outside diameter.

    Very interesting, quite a bit of prep time. I don't have all the tools you have so some of the stuff you do I have to be creative - I have yet to make the segmented blanks yet, because I don't have a band saw it has proved more challenging. I've made quite a few of the modified slim lines (I think they are my favorite pen to make and I've done quite a few glue-ups with veneer as well another option on the modified slim lines is to use the stylus conversion kit for the 7mm pens makes a nice light stylus w/pen.

      +Dave Roush Thank you Dave,
      I know you can get creative and find alternative ways to make these blanks. Let me know what you come up with because I get questions all the time about alternatives and I can share your findings.

    *Dons sunglasses* WHAT SORRY I CAN'T LIP READ! Nice.
    Use a dowel or chopped up pencils to clamp in the middle of concaved parts at the end, then you aren't putting pressure on one (or both) of the points and can apply more pressure as a whole. You could also use some strips of thick leather or compressible foam (old mouse mats / neoprene) on the convexed side to account for the bow. 12:30 as reference to what I'm talking about.

      No no, no faults with the video at all, I was having a lil joke about the brightness of your new lighting (it's great, nice job).
      The second part was advice about clamping concaves and convexes with regard to small parts and small clamps etc.
      Apologies, I'm tired.

      RJBWoodTurner after I posted that comment I was thanking it might be easier if instead of gluing up each individual blank maybe it would be easier to make it like a big cutting board and then cut it into blanks on the table saw. Just an idea

    Nice pen. I haven't gotten around to trying out a modified slim line yet. You have so much time into that pen it's going to be hard to get your money back from it. Segmented are still a good seller for me though. BTW your "cherry" veneer is mahogany. Still waiting for you to make a trip up to Indy...

    • @RJBWoodTurner

      I use Titebond II wood glue, it’s very stable and the blanks hold together very well. If your blanks are blowing apart while drilling clear the bit more often and pause to allow the bit to cool.

    • @RJBWoodTurner
      @RJBWoodTurner  2 года назад

      I recently made a batch of them on the bandsaw. If you do several at a time it you can really knock the total time investment down. Plus, now I sell the blanks when I make these, not finished pens.

      I didn't plane them, I ran them through the band saw just to clean them up a bit. I'll show the drilling the next time I use one. I have an idea for another modified pen, based on a different kit, and plan to use one of these blanks.

    Bob the pen turned out beautifully! Can you explain what a modified pen is and the various modifications you can do to a pen/pen kit? Maybe make all of that a video topic? I watched one of your videos last night which I think was a modified pen as you pulled the tube out after it was finished. What is the purpose or benefit of a modified pen?
    Thanks Bob.
    Ron

    • @RJBWoodTurner

      There really is no benefit, it’s just fun to mix it up and not make the same ole thing all the time. I have a play list of all the modified pens I’ve made. When you’re on one of my videos, click my name and it will take you to my home page. There is a playlist selection on there.

      I may have spoken to soon, I have been searching all morning and can not find one. That blank may become a click pencil and I'll turn the mate onto an 8mm Slimline Pro from Pen. State. I'll keep everyone updated on this.
