True. For Shaolin monks, martial arts isn't only just for fighting, self-defense and protection for the temple. It is also to help them maintain a strong and healthy body. They believe that the healthier the body is, the longer it can withstand long meditations, and with more meditation comes enlightenment.

I have seen a SHAOLIN MONKS WORLD TOUR mall show in our city 6 years ago (Lucena City, Philippines). They showcased their talent: the sword handling, the frog, the snake, the monkey, the eagle, the drunken monkey, the preying mantis etc. It was the best show i have ever seen.

Very few people have the determination and fortitude necessary to learn what these monks learn. Training their bodies and learning these arts is not something they do for a few years to look cool with weekend breaks in-between -- this is a way of life for them. Every day, rain or shine, their bodies and minds are trained with the goal of finding enlightenment. I have nothing but respect for these cats and their near inhuman dedication.

Behold the skill and discipline of these kids. Not only will they one day become awesome masters in their own right, bringing honor to the Temple, but they'll possess the courage to endure through life whatever path they take.
That is the enduring legacy of Shaolin.

Yes, it is definitely possible. I can attest to it because I have been doing Shaolin kung fu for one year now and have just accomplished the splits. I started when I was 24, now 26. It takes more patience and a lot of hard work as you get older, but it is possible. Good luck! =)

i cant exactly remember right, but i did a bit of research on shaolin monks a few years back and they originally trained in kun fu because i think bandits kept raiding the temples, so they trained in order to use whatever weapon they had to defend themselves. Brooms, sticks etc.
Not only for the but for spiritual reasons aswell.

i get decicated alot but it only lasts for song long.. months then i drift off to other things.. This is the type of thing u need to be encourged to do so u will keep training and never stop.. Like monks or be focused only on this.. But im a regular person and i cant give my whole life to this so I dont focus on it as much as other people.

The legs have 3 times the striking power compared to the arms. What you learn in Tae Kwon Do is how to fight with your legs and still be able to keep your balance after the strikes, which nullifies the sideeffect of the powerful kicks.

actually Kung Fu was developed much before the man you are referring to came about to China. The only thing the Indians did to affect Kung Fu is adding A.)Buddhism. and B.)Setting a new standard for fitness for the Chinese monks. The reason they set a new standard for fitness for the monks was because the Chinese monks could not keep up with the Indian monks when it came to spiritual training but now instead of doing what the Indian monk told them to do, they practice a form of Kung Fu.

It's located in Dengfeng, China, specifically. I considered going there a few years ago (but my employment and financial situation has taken a turn for the worse).
Although the monks at the temple not longer teach the public, China Shaolin Temple Kung Fu School is authorized to teach on the premises, and, from what I understand, many excellent schools have sprung up both nearby and elsewhere, once the temple quit teaching the public.
I am not qualified to give any meaningful recommendations

A friend told me that martial arts and weapons used in martial arts (like the staff and hook swords) is what makes true warriors, and that those who weild guns are cowards.
I agree with him. And I respect the Shaolin to a high degree.

Originally they learned because many bad guys were like "Oh hey, there's a Buddhist temple with tons of gold statues and a bunch of weak idiot monks all alone in the middle of the forest. Anyone feeling a raid?" Also many people during wars would take refuge at the temple, they learned how to fight to defend their temple. I believe the last time the Shaolin monks fought in an actual battle was when they fought the Japanese Empiral army during WWII. The Japanese respected them and let them live

@LoCoLaG thats because the elements and bending styles are of actual martial arts
    firebending: Wushu kung fu
    waterbending: tai chi
    Earthbending: Tae Kwon Doe
    airbending:Shaolin kung fu
they wanted bending to look cool so they looked up these martial arts styles and even put qualities of the elemts accordingly to the martial arts
in avatar water bending can heal and tai chi is a style of chi and healing :) lol

lol? I agreed with you until " even a well trained Adult Shaolin Monk would not stand a chance against any UFC top contenders". I agree that UFC fighters are extremely well skilled fighters/martial artists but I think youre underestimating these Shaolin Monks. There conditioning are different and more extreme/more disciplined and I bet that these Shaolin Monks can do things with ease that UFC fighters will have difficulty doing. so the "not stance a chance" is quite ignorant
