They sexually abused and murdered countless children, as well as treating unmarried mothers abominably. In UK in 1961 my teenage birth mother was forced to give me up for adoption, disowned by her family and treated appallingly at the hostel she went to run by "religious" people, including during labour. She has never got over it- so abused, so traumatised. My adoption was not good. We met by incredible chance on facebook 2 years ago, it has been rocky, we're both trying our best in kindness.
I had a Irish friend, who stuttered quite badly. One day I asked him if he had stuttered all his life. He replied, It started when I was in a catholic orphanage, after continual beatings from the nuns,. for any little wrong doing. From that day on, I questioned religion, never really believing in going to church. Then I made the mistake of visiting a jewish customer on a saturday, realising my mistake made my apologises and started to leave. To my surprise he waved my apologises aside and said "come in, I find the synagoge full of hypocrites, my church is my home and you are very welcome" So today, I believe my god represents what I can do for others, not being part of a 'church club' to prove my religous beliefs.
@@johnchristmas7522 My elderly neighbour, a kind lovely woman was an avid church goer and christian all her life, when she started getting sick not one person from the church went round to see how she was or if she needed anything. There were lots of good clergy too. I was my mother's eighth child, born in Dun Laoghaire in 1958.. I was born at home. Nuns came into the house and assisted with the birth and took care of my siblings. Not a penny was asked for or expected.
So many great memories of watching Dave Allen as a child with my late Mum, we laughed so much at his shows 'Dave Allen at large' between 1971 and 1979, I'm 59 now and it seems an age ago, but sometimes just like yesterday. Thanks for making us laugh Dave, and bless you Mum, I miss you everyday!

Dave Allen was a master storyteller, as well as a hilarious and intelligent comedian. I remember watching his TV shows when I was a kid, there were a bunch of sketches, often with religious themes for which he was always in trouble for, and monologues in front of the audience. Some of the sketches stick in my mind to this day, but mostly I remember him perched on the stool with a whiskey in one hand and a cigarette in the other, regaling the audience with some everyday event but described from his weird off-kilter viewpoint. An absolute legend.

I dont recall this but I bet I saw it when it first aired as my Dad was a huge fan. I used to love watching Dave allen as a kid and can totally relate to this childhood confusion. Circa 1970, Im 7 years old and we have just moved to a new house next to a family of christians who had kids a similar age. Not too long after moving to this new house I find myself attending sunday school with next doors kids. My parents were not religious in the slightest and my dad was a very logical thinker but I think they just wanted to clear the house of kids for a few hours so they could get it on in peace. Anyone who thinks nuns are bad, never attended a catholic grammar school in the UK run by the (celibate) Christian Brothers in the 1960's Your off-hand remark about celibacy is spot-on. One of the teachers at my all-boy school, still holds at least a top three place, in my list of unpleasant people I have ever met. Even as teenage boys,, myself and class mates put his personality down to a man in his 20's, not-getting- any.
I went to a Christian Brother's school in the UK in the 1980's and one of the younger brothers told us that he went on retreat to Ireland and some of the older brothers there still flagellated themselves. Bonkers!
@@dufflepod Yup same .Not sure how i got there wasn't even Christian or Catholic. They toned down by them days but was a lot of spanking of arses with leather straps still going on lol.
This was great! Brings back so many memories. I grew up watching PBS on Sunday nights and experiencing such great stuff as Dave Allen, The Two Ronnies, Monty Python and of Course Dr.Who. My best personal misheard lyrics was when I walked into the office and heard a service rep singing "Don't feel the reefer!" and I burst into laughter. She said what's so funny? I said "it's "Don't fear the reaper"
Haven't seen any of Dave Allen''s comedy for years but watching this after so long you realise what a great, clever comedy story teller he was. Genius really. Btw I had a similar start to life as Dave and it really does affect you for the rest of your life. I'm now a devout athiest at the age of 60 and not a week goes by when I don't think about the horrors of being abused daily by sexually repressed catholic nuns and priests.
At Catholic primary school, when I was ten, I was told by a teacher that if I deliberately missed mass on a Sunday, that I would be in a state of mortal sin, and that if I was then knocked down and killed on Monday, I would go straight to hell. Happy days.
Love Dave Allen. Memories of watching him when I was a child. I had nuns at my school and they were lovely, great story tellers. One of them must have had a photographic memory as she knew everyone and knew who you were related to. We also had monks visit our school every Lent and they were fun.
Happy Birthday Nick have a great day, it's the Birthdays that end in zero that worry me 😊 I grew up watching the Dave Allen show so I'm really enjoying seeing him again and loving your reactions.
I can easily let a birthday slip by BUT Denise, my wife, who passed away in March 2015, believed that every decade aught to be celebrated AND she made sure it was a celebration for me. I bought into it and would start planning 3 months before to make sure that i got friends from far afield and then sorted a quartet, magician etc to make sure it was special
You have to remember that he's talking about the 1940's and yes, nuns (not all) could be very cruel, especially to boys for some reason. That aside, glad you're enjoying Dave Allen he was a treasure who is sadly missed.
It went on in Ireland until the 1990’s the sexual abuse and physical violence of thousands of boys and girls, look into the the little sister of pity, and watch the true film spotlight, it was also rife in America, they actually set up a clinic for pedo priests it was that bad
No he bloody isn't talking about the forties , the Nuns were doing this sort of stuff up until the Irish government tribunals of the 2000's , I had a women work for me who still worked in a magdeline laundry , walk through the grounds of the Tuam convent every dead nun has a grave stone , the hundreds of dead babies found there have nothing ....thats not from the 1940's that was happening up to the twenty first century when they were found out.
I love how Dave really shows the ridiculousness of the religious doctrine and the things you are made to believe. And yet so many accept it as "yep, that could happen" without any evidence. So easy to convince a child of anything though, and then all you have to do is keep repeating it often enough that it sticks. They don't do the say with other stories like Father Christmas and the Tooth Fairy though. They let you stop believing in those. Great stuff from Dave Allen.
This is so true. I went to Mercy convent high school. The flapping down the halls. 5 yrs of it. I agree with you. Some nuns are lovely, but some are not so nice.
I am Italian and when I was small there were no state kindergartens, but the nuns in our village ran one in their convent. I spent a lot of time there, morning and afternoon, Monday to Saturday. First thing in the morning we had to put our hands on our little desks and they would check if our nails were clean, if they were not, they would wack our hands with a stick. Then when I started elementary school, twice a week we had to go to the convent for catechism classes, which were compulsory, and mass every Sunday. This went on until the end of middle school. In all those years, I had developed an obsession of wanting to become a nun, don't ask me why, but when I started high school at 14, I saw the light. I went to a scientific lyceum, which opened up my mind and my horizons, it nurtured critical thinking, it taught me not to believe blindly, but to question everything. The added bonus was that my parents never pushed religion on me, mind you, they never went to church, save for weddings and funerals, and we never discussed religion because, we had more important things to talk about. Although, in general, my experience was pretty positive, I can't say the same for other children. The nuns could be really vile.
Happy birthday Nick, im sitting in my kitchen. 5.30 in the morning laughing. The bit when he arrived and saw Jesus on the cross made me spit my tea out. Thank you 😂
Dave helped enlighten a lot of young people. Amazing what we as atheist adults have to do to unlearn the religious mumbo jumbo through using our reasoning and common sense .
I enjoyed your video. Dave Allen had a great sense of humour. Couple of things, my first wife was called Elizabeth and for many years her younger sister thought the last line of the Lords Prayer was "and Elizabeth from Evil" not "and deliver us from evil". I was brought up Catholic part of the Irish diaspora, and the nuns that taught me were gentle and kind. Sadly, for many, that wasn't their experience. Search for the Magdelen Launderies. These were institutions in Ireland run by nuns for unmarried mothers and their children. They were Hell holes, hidden in the grounds of the Laundry in the County Galway they have found the graves of over 800 children.
I am in my 80's and I grew up in the "fire and brimstone" area of "spare the rod and spoil the child". My family were pretty laid back but when the Irish missionaries came to town we sat pale faced and eyes wide as they fumed and threatened us with the fires of hell... I still have the memories even now.. good to laugh along with Dave Allen!
Happy birthday! Completely understood what you said about not liking all the fuss of birthdays. My youngest son (now 26) has hated birthdays since he was little, he loved the presents but would go behind the curtains to open them because he didn't like people looking at him, he's just very introverted and shy, while my eldest is very bubbly and extrovert. Having two kids with different personalities is not a problem until it comes to big birthdays, because as parents you want to treat your kids equally, but we couldn't do that when it came to 18th and 21st birthdays, as my eldest wanted the big parties but my youngest absolutely refused, he was even worried that we'd throw him a surprise party and begged us not to... it made us feel bad because we felt like we'd treated him unfairly but it's what he wanted so he got extra pressies instead.
I went to school in Ireland in the early 80s.. It wasn't just the Nuns or Priests though, Teachers in general could be brutal. Corporal punishment was outlawed in 1982. But it went on in schools for years after. There were some decent teachers but there was also outright sadists. We had a Sr Annunciata and she had a mean right hook on her if you were within range. If you were sitting down yapping at the back of the class, she would often launch the blackboard duster (Gleantoir) at you with devastating accuracy😂 The assault always followed with her screaming: "Do you realise that the Lord above can strike you down at any minute ya little Pup ya." She was protecting us from God's vengeance I suppose😂😂
At my first school I couldn't cope with the nuns, they frightened the life out of me. I eventually moved to a nearby protestant school and spent the rest of my educational life as a protestant.
So much truth said in jest, Dave was a genius storyteller, As a child I went to a convent school then a roman catholic prep school some of the priests and nuns were scary people sadly some of the most 'Godly' are also the most unchristian, I would never send my child to any faith school due to mine and other people's experiences there Cheers Jim, UK 🤐
I went to a convent school.. Nuns are absolutely terrifying to kids. The slap of the ruler against the desk top, knocking the ink well everywhere. (making up sins because we had to have confession every other Wednesday..).. I instantly turn into a 7 year old and quiver in my shoes… We watched Dave Allen with dad And spent every minute laughing. Then confessing to taking the lords name in vain.. Those were the days lol..
I don't make a deal over my so called birthday but my kids tried for a while to get me to celebrate it...but they got the message slowly over the years... mid 60s now and not into going out
You mention the missing tip to one of his fingers. He has several sketches where he tells long rambling stories, some ghost / horror, that lead up to how he lost his finger ..... [ Supposedly ].
Im 60 and watch Dave as a kid in 80' it was hillarious there was not anything like that on tv like that. there are police, church, government, and other jokes and it was ok for all of us...jokes
you're not alone one that Sir. Same here, greetings are enough for me. I don't do Celebrations on my birthday. 1st day of School = 1st day of our Indoctrination life Where we are taught to believe everything what we are told to believe and never question Authority. I came from a Catholic family, went to Catholic schools kinder to college, that made now see lots of holes in the book rather than holy.
The head honcho nun, was wicked. One look could turn you to stone. Had a face, like a bulldog chewing a wasp. The rest of the nuns, were really lovely.
Happy Birthday Nick. I'm not much for hoopla either. Give me a good feed and a day off cooking and I'm happy. Best birthday gift this year was Oz beating the poms in the 1st Ashes test. Because of the time difference it finished on my birthday.
There was a song called Motor Bikin'. My brother for years used to sing Maura Bracken because he thought thats what they were singing even though it made no sense. This was back in the mid 70s I think. Listening to it now, it seems quite clear what they are singing. but back then there was no internet or way to find the lyrics.
Happy Birthday Nick, an apple as a gift for teacher lol. Yeah, i'm 43, in recent years i've started to feel similar to you. My past few Birthdays it's been more of an occasion for my girlfriend than me.
I love Dave Allen, is deadpan delivery is iconic. With regards Birthdays, I agree the Mom should be the celebrant, I had no say in when, where, how or why I was born.
I was a contractor who came into regular contact with nuns in the UK and I have to say what a wonderful set of human beings they are . friendly with a sense of humour you wouldnt believe .
He got banned from the BBC here in England for one of his jokes that wouldn't now be too risky because not everybody is familiar with some of the words. When I told the joke in the pub the other week, older people got it, but the expressions on some of the 20-30 year olds was almost as funny
Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes I thought for the longest time were singing in the chorus that they had a faulty elevator where they lived, and only eagles could fly there. "The lift is out where we belong ........ where the eagles cry ...... from the mountain high"
Happy Birthday for last month. Once past a certain age there is nothing to celebrate, unless getting closer to meeting the Grim Reaper is a reason to party. Lol :)
Regarding birthdays, I agree. I take the view of the famous American philosopher Dean Martin, who said something like "What is there to celebrate about another year? It's easy to complete another year. Just lie down on the ground and hang on to the Earth."
I was educated by a nun when i was six. She was ultra violent. She beat me one day 'cos i said gods name is harold. I.e. our father who art in heaven harold be thy name. She picked me up from behind by the shoulders and drove her knee into my back then threw me to the floor. All the catholic clergy have repressed sexual tension. It was scary. Violent nuns and lecherous priests. Dave allen is spot on sadly.
I was on holiday once when I went passed a small chapel on the way to the pub (UK) and this nun came out and asked my where I was going so I told her and she said "I'll come with you." and proceeded to walk with me right up to the pub door before saying "Enjoy yourself." before turning on her heel a walking back to the little chappel
My favourite nun is Wendy Mary Beckett, RIP, who was the best art historian I've ever known. If you know nothing about art but are curious to learn, Wendy is the best person to listen to. If you search for her on RUclips, she's very easy to find.
Our schools used to allow using the cane. (A stick to whip children with). My friend attended a catholic school. Some of the teachers were nuns. She told me the only teachers to use the cane were the nuns and they would do so with ease. They enjoyed it.
My birthday is january the first to me it is just another day which is just as well because nobody remembers. l never tire of Dave Allen, have a great day.
I'm from Ireland and was taught by nuns one day I was misbehaving in class and one of the nuns locked me in a cupboard and forgot about me. It was only when my mother came looking for me that they realised what they had done. I was locked in that cupboard for three hours.
The Catholic Church in Ireland was very dominant and very oppressive; they did some dreadful things especially concerning un-wed mothers.
They sexually abused and murdered countless children, as well as treating unmarried mothers abominably. Anyone who thinks nuns are bad, never attended a catholic grammar school in the UK run by the (celibate) Christian Brothers in the 1960's
Your off-hand remark about celibacy is spot-on.
Bonkers!
That’s why nuns go around in pairs. So one nun don’t get none
I went to Catholic grade school, Catholic high school. 8 years of nuns, 4 years of priests, 3 years of therapy, but I’m fine now.
At Catholic primary school, when I was ten, I was told by a teacher that if I deliberately missed mass on a Sunday, that I would be in a state of mortal sin, and that if I was then knocked down and killed on Monday, I would go straight to hell. Happy days.
Sad thing is these teacher’s probably believed that themselves , as they were taught the same thing .
Religion is the abandonment of intellect
We had two nun teachers at our primary school. One was really nice, the other was quite fearsome. Good cop/bad cop.
Love Dave Allen. Memories of watching him when I was a child. I had nuns at my school and they were lovely, great story tellers. One of them must have had a photographic memory as she knew everyone and knew who you were related to. We also had monks visit our school every Lent and they were fun.
That wasn't the case in Ireland .
As I once heard it said, "the moment you're born, you join the back of the death queue."
This is so true. I went to Mercy convent high school. The flapping down the halls. 5 yrs of it. I agree with you. Some nuns are lovely, but some are not so nice.
Happy birthday fella, have a lovely day. We had nuns in the small village I grew up in and they were nasty to us young kids.
Love David Allen I was lucky enough to see him live in early 90s. It's a shame his shows are not repeated on the bbc
Infants buried in a septic tank. Shameful.
He went to a boarding school on Griffith avenue Dublin, it was called the obi, o , Brien s industrial industrialschool.
Dave Allen was brilliant, just briliant!
In the 70s in Australia , Nun's were ultra strict mothers.Preists would play football with us and have a laugh.
RIP Dave , we saw him live in London once.....brilliant !
Nick, YES!! i feel the same way with birthdays. It's just a day.
"Just lost my train of thought". Yeah, that's what more birthdays will do to you. I speak from the experience of 68 of them!
My father went to the Christian Brothers in Derry. He never had a good word to say about them to the day he died.
I didn't understand initially preparing your first weeks clothes. Thank goodness for school uniforms, great leveller, imo.
You should watch Dave Allen's Religious Jokes.
I instantly turn into a 7 year old and quiver in my shoes…
We watched Dave Allen with dad
And spent every minute laughing.
I went to a Catholic Convent School in England and all I can say is that it made me into a Happy Atheist !!
Are you sure you don't mean Antitheist?
@@2l84t oooooh! We are pedantic today aren’t we? While Antitheist is correct (strictly speaking) - 99.99% of people use the word Atheist!
Im 60 and watch Dave as a kid in 80' it was hillarious there was not anything like that on tv like that. there are police, church, government, and other jokes and it was ok for all of us...jokes
Birthdays are just another day, we are all just a day older
you're not alone one that Sir. Same here, greetings are enough for me. I don't do Celebrations on my birthday.
1st day of School = 1st day of our Indoctrination life
Where we are taught to believe everything what we are told to believe and never question Authority.
To quote Dave Allen "May your God go with you".
Happy Birthday Nick, an apple as a gift for teacher lol. Yeah, i'm 43, in recent years i've started to feel similar to you. My past few Birthdays it's been more of an occasion for my girlfriend than me.
In the 1970s, I was taught by German nuns in a London Catholic primary school, they were very strict but not nasty.
I love Dave Allen, is deadpan delivery is iconic. With regards Birthdays, I agree the Mom should be the celebrant, I had no say in when, where, how or why I was born.
7:53 Jodi, excuse the pun, but you nailed it! Nuns get none, but they do pick up some bad habits along the way! Candles out!🙃
Dave was raised a Catholic, however, he later stated that he became dismayed by the hypocrisy of it's teaching.
As a 5 year old, with everyone praying in assembly at school, I came to the conclusion that everyone was NUTS. Haven't changed my mind since.
Happy birthday Nick. Hoping you have a great day.
I was a contractor who came into regular contact with nuns in the UK and I have to say what a wonderful set of human beings they are . friendly with a sense of humour you wouldnt believe .
Happy Birthday Nick - I guess you are still in Europe so enjoy your day where ever you may be 🙂
Re birthdays, I couldn’t care less BUT I never work on that day. Feels nice to take a random day. Great vid as always 👍
My mother was anorphan in the 2nd world war in Italy and was bought up in a convent. She had the scars on her back to the day she died😢
My favourite nun is Wendy Mary Beckett, RIP, who was the best art historian I've ever known. If you know nothing about art but are curious to learn, Wendy is the best person to listen to. If you search for her on RUclips, she's very easy to find.
The absolutely brilliant Dave Allen.
I grew up in a irish Catholic background. The nuns i knew was a muxture of lovely and terrifying. My mam always said god was watching us.
We have a birthday tradition in our family, on your birthday you can have anything you want for dinner.
His shows were heavily censored in America.
His take on Adam and eve is classic.
I love the Irish. My ancestors. They have a wonderful way with words.
Totally agree with you on birthdays.
He was considered really edgy at the time because he always had jokes and sketches about the church .
My 60th this year and I feel I will have to celebrate it with family 😅
I always feel that its better that people celebrate your birthday than celebrate the day you die. Hehe!
Try Dave Allen Adam & Eve😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
They hit you, pulled ears, pinched, pretty much everything, then tolled you it's because they loved you.😂❤
Dave made the comment that he lost part of his finger because he used to hold his whiskey with that finger in the glass.
“It doesn’t make sense”. No sh!t. It’s almost as though the whole religion is made up.
I remember when that skit first came out. It's as funny now as it was then.
My wife and I are the same we do not buy gifts for Birthdays, Mothers Day, Fathers Day Christmas we buy gifts though out the year instead
I went to school in the UK so no nun’s but some of our teachers were violent, and no one questioned it . 1970’s - not all the good old days.
