It’s not at all uncommon to hear people say that China’s most advanced stealth fighters, the in-service Chengdu J-20 and forthcoming Shenyang FC-31, both incorporate stolen design elements from existing American and Russian fighter programs. But while Russian claims are based on observation alone... America's claims are backed up by hard evidence and the admission of the man responsible for the effort.
Let's talk about Su Bin - the man who stole America's stealth fighters for China.

    • @_Coffee4Closers

WRONG... there was exactly ZERO Classified data stolen. Classified data can NOT be hacked because classified data is NOT connected to the internet. If you had ever work with such data you would know that it is kept in a "Secure Compartmental Information Facility" (SCIF) that has ZERO access from the outside of a locked vault where people work on it. Now, it is true they stole design files on air-frame shaping and other non-classified files, but nothing even at the "confidential" level (lowest level of classification) was stolen. This of course begs the question of why the F'k this stuff was not classified, as it should he been, but clearly was not classified at the time.

I mean how come that we give a Chinese communist dictatorship national access to our technology, and even hire him/his company in order to work on military aviation technology/programs?! We know that every Chinese person is required by LAW to spy for their dictator state, even those who are born outside of China, as long as their parents are Chinese. Why the hell would we give them access knowing all that?!?! We know that every Chinese person is a security risk. We shouldn't allow any Chinese to work on anything sensitive even in the private sector. Or at least not without stringent security background check and constant observation/checks on whether they flipped and are now actively working for their evil dictatorship regime!?!?!?! It's mindboggling how sloppy our industries/agencies/military is operating when it comes to Chinese espionage!?!?!?!

It wasn't one guy or even 10. He made a concerted effort to buddy up to as many people as possible, build up his familiarity and comfort level with as many people as possible and build a web of trust around him that caused other people to let their guard down around him. This was lots and lots of small leaks over a long period of time and pieced together. They didn't break in like a bank heist one night and run off with the plans. They managed to get access to a landing gear door plans one time, and then another time, get access to canopy hinge plans, etc. You do that enough, and you can start to slowly fill in more and more blanks.

I’m a retired aerospace engineer and I worked on a couple of these programs and I know exactly how this stuff happens yet every year you hear of more spies stealing critical defense information. Alex I’m glad you’re bringing this in the spotlight because this is a serious problem and I thought sometime in my retirement I would see this change but it looks like it’s never gonna change. For one we need to stop using the Internet to share files between subcontractors and prime contractors. That’s a problem right there and we need to develop aircraft and weapon systems the “skunk works” way -in extreme secrecy, using isolated computer networks and without hiring people from other countries on work visas!!
I hope Mr. Shoe bin or whatever’s name is buys a lot of soap on a rope! For his short stay in prison.

People who think that every stealth fighter has to look like the F-22 because "the general design is the optimal solution to the stealth fighter problem" have clearly never done any engineering or design work.
There is no such thing as a single solution to a problem. The reason so many new planes look like the F-22 is because it's easier and cheaper to copy and modify a proven design than it is to develop something new from the ground up.

They need to do they're due diligence and triple check the companies and their work force to make sure that they are American born.

Just one thing to say : the aircraft exterior appearance is just the surface of the iceberg : given pictures, videos, basic specifications, it wouldn't be that hard for chinese engineers to make 3D designs of the aircraft's aerodynamics and asses it's overall performance, the issue is way deeper about the material used' their composition, and much more about the systems of equipment going into the airframe. The Soviets struggled for a while during the beginning of the jet age as they coppied RollsRoyce engines, but didn't know the characteristics of the steel alloys used. Outward apperance can be coppied, for the airframe as for components, the issue is about the functionnality, which can be way harder to reverse-engineer
