Like the British Para officer in a Bridge Too Far carrying his umbrella into battle in Arnhem. You've got to love the esprit de corp of the British military.
Or "Mad Jack Churchill" who went into battle with a Longbow and Scottish broadsword. The death of at least one German soldier was confirmed by getting shot in the neck with an arrow.
@@ianbaker8225 Plus Ord Wingate and Evelyn Waugh to name a couple of other unconventional British soldiers. Or Jonny Frost who led the British to the Arnhem bridge, so many amazing British soldiers over the years.
@@Asahamana The British officer "Harry" was based on is Digby Tatham-Warter. And he was an even larger than life character than in the movie. After he was captured at Arnhem he escaped and eventually led 150 escaped soldiers to freedom.
Remembering those brave Cavalrymen and Royal Tank Regiment personnel who sacrificed their lives in Britains' wars...Continuing the tradition with the style and panache one expects from those wonderful Regiments.
The Royal Tank Regiment is organised more like an infantry regiment, oddly enough. They where organised into battalions and companies. They also used the infantry ranking system. This is because they where originally part of the infantry. In fact the first tank unit was organised as the heavy branch of the machine gun corps.
Nobody remembers Guards Armoured charging across the Low Countries in 1944 with umbrellas deployed from their tank turrets. It was bravado, and admirable. whatever Swaine Adeney Brigg might think.
I would love to attend this this year. Can anyone help me as to where I can apply. I am in a wheelchair but will come with my daughter & want to be on the road they march down & hear all the bands. I understand a band marches from the Hyde Park barracks & others come from the direction of Horseguards.
I was wondering if this was the actual idea behind John Steed. Everyone assumes Steed was dressed as a typical English Gent, but it's implied in various episodes that he once held a high military rank.
@@TheDrummie1 I did see that, but it seemed strange for a woman to wear a bowler hat. Plus, wouldn't a woman be exempt from removing their hat? After all, women are allowed to wear one in church (see the king's coronation).
Is it true that only the ex-officers are entitled to wear the bowler and unfurled umbrella - with ex-other ranks permitted to attend without - on these occasions?
@R T Amazing! Even in retirement and, now equal members of society, the officer class still "pulls rank"!! IMHO the "officers" are pulling something else!!
As I said on a previous comments (See Scots Guards Black Sunday parade) I find it a shame that the Officers HAVE to distinguish themselves from the "other" ranks by wearing bowler hats. All seems a litle silly and they do look a bit "Toffish"

Excellent video, short and informative, bowler hats, suits and umbrellas the perfect attire for the occasion.
How dashing in their bowlers. I never realized the symbolism. I really do enjoy these videos...❤️🙏🇬🇧🤝🇺🇸
A good bowler hat is a joy to wear.

Tradition. Posture. Elegance.

Such a very British occasion👍 I think it’s occasions, with a traditions backstory is unique and brilliant 🫡

What hat do female officers, who are vets, wear?
Skirt with no bowler hat lol
We'll find out when the first of them are old enough to retire. I don't think they've had female officers for that long yet.
There's a clip on youtube of this parade and there is a female ex-officer in smart suit( skirt) and bowler hat.

Irish.
Sounds Irish but I've heard Canadians and Alaskans who sound similar to that due to their heritage.
That was my first thought too. I’d put money on it.
Only Officers have bowler hats and carry an umbrella.

But they'd surely be different even in berets as I presume they have a different badge to enlisted troops?
