- On lap 120 Sterling Marlin gives Alan Kulwicki a bump into Darrell Waltrip who slides through the grass with Joe Ruttman and takes one whale of a ride in the Pepsi 400 at Daytona.
July 6th 1991 - Спорт
Bob, Ned, and Benny were the three greatest people to call a NASCAR race. I miss them.
Wher are you
i miss this broadcast team. brings back childhood memories.
Ikr great memorys with my dad.
I'm glad Darryl was okay after this accident. I've heard it said that this was the wreck that made Darryl contemplate retirement. It's also hard to believe that three of the men that were in this race are no longer with us. Someone was definitely watching over D. W. this day. Rest in peace, Davey Allison, Alan kulwicki, and Dale Earnhardt Sr.
Having that energy displace over an extended period of time along with the engineering of stock cars saved DW. Unlike Dale Earnhardt where that energy was all focused on one moment and nothing but concrete to deflect that energy back into Dale's car. In a collision there are actually three impacts in most cases, one is the initial impact, the second impact are the bodies organs slamming against the rib cage and the 3rd are those same organs slamming back into their respective positions within the body. The safer barriers help tremendously on absorbing that initial impact.
@@mostrosticator Thank you, for being realistic. If only "being realistic" was contagious.
Benny's "c'mon DW..." is pretty gut-wrenching, no matter how many times I watch this clip.
He was worried about Darryl. That was a terrible wreck he witnessed. Then later on he was excited to hear D.W. was ok. This was professionalism at its best.
"All the greats have flipped at Daytona."
Darrell Waltrip.
Michael McIntyre except for Jimmie Johnson
It's the most dangerous track. Most meaningful victory, which means the biggest sacrifices and attempts to win.
Talladega has some pretty good flips too!
@@peanutentertainment His Watkins Glen head on crash was enough. No flips needed on his resume.
I was 10 years old and I was sitting on the back stretch, and I can remember that like it was yesterday
"Man oh man".
I miss BP man.
My left ear really enjoyed the commentary.
Yeah no shit. Though my ear buds went. Was about to get mad. Lol
ayo it worked for my right ear for me
"We have a mess" I miss Benny Parsons. And Bob Jenkins too.
"...in what appears to be a very serious crash..."
Understatement of the decade right there
if you want to see the car (whats left of it), its in the darlington raceway museum.
In NASCAR today, it would be a perfect time for another commercial break.
This was when nascar was impressive.
It still is
You got that right! I Don't even watch anymore.
Was it ever?
In the back of my mind I hear DW saying “boogitie” as the cars go through the grass. If I’m not mistaken DW said later on in his career as an announcer that it feels like you pick up tremendous speed going through the wet grass
Benny parsons best racing announcer ever
I miss Jackie Stewart and Keith Jackson announcing races in the '70s
Boogity, Boogity, Boogity!!!!! Lets Go Flipping Boys!!!!!
@ChambanaWags86 yeah these guys actually KNEW how to call a race. made it seem more like you were actually there rather than watching tv
rip benny
hey, Sterling had no place to go in Earnhardts wreck. Don't blame that on Sterling.
Damn that boogitied my mind
lol
XD
LMAO
Darrell’s mind too #BlenderBrain
Lel
That week before at Watkins Glenn might of been the race where JD McDuffie died in that crash
Might OF been
Might HAVE been
I agree and haven't followed the sport nearly as much since Dale passed. He was my favorite. When the crash first happened,I didn't think it was that serious. DW knew better. I realized it was bad when DW said that was a hard lick and Kenny Schraeder was then seen calling for paramedics. Nascar has made many safety changes since Fireball Roberts perished in a fiery crash, but no safety equipment will ever protect a driver going 180 mph to zero instantly.
Thank you for the answer!
This car is in the Darlington Raceway museum. So cool and torn up.
i got pics of the car.every time i go back home i visit there and stop by and talk to cale yarbrough
nascarbig1s I actually saw the car in person as well last year, I'm going to Darlington in a few days for the Xfinity race.
I have a coil spring from that car. I was in the infield that day, went out there after the race and found it. I was only 9 at the time, another kid next to us went out there and found one of his coil springs, his water bottle, his goggles, and scrap metal. By the time my dad let me out there everything was gone, except the coil spring I found in some tall grass over toward turn 3.
Jaysus, that was a BIG hit...
I still like Nascar, still watch every Sunday. I really miss Dale (go Harvick). I was 6 years old in 91 but still remember watching some of the races and to me the early 90s was the golden age of Nascar.
Amazing That Alan was able to keep control himself.
Was at this race in main grandstands, and wondered where DW was when field of cars came around past the pits!
I can only imagine that one helluva ride. Geeez
Love DW. He's just a super great person to talk to. Go DW. I'am not an autograph collecter DW asked me did I want his I said only if it is on a check he said he would have to remember that.It was at Goodyear Mill Cartersville quite a few years ago.Mill shut down in 2003.And now is mostly gone. Thanks DW For being such great person
This was my first race. I'll never forget the wreck because they were wrecking a lap prior to the flip.
Drokkers, windows were tinted back then because of the sun, most races back then started at noon on Sunday when it was hot as hell, alot of drivers back then still wore open faced helmets & cool suits I don't think were around a whole lot during that time so they did everything they could to minimize the heat inside the car. This would include tinting windows & having ice packs put into firesuits during the race. Not sure why cars don't have tinted windows nowadays, I suppose it's some NASCAR rule that came out sometime in the last 15 years. I saw this wrecked car in the Darlington Speedway museum & I can tell you for anyone who hasn't seen it up close, Darrell is very lucky he was able to get out of that thing with no broken bones...
+Vine Wood -Actually, in NASCAR windows have NEVER been tinted black.....only a slight band across the top of the front window if anything at all....
tinted windows looked epic...
DeLaun Fifield Wrong, you've obviously only been watching NASCAR racing in the last 10 years or so. From about 1980 to 1995, NASCAR allowed teams to tint their windows, watch some races from back then, you can clearly see on some cars front windshield, half the windshield is tinted as well as the side windows...
I know this comment is a year old, but I believe the reason NASCAR doesn't allow tinted windows anymore is because they make it harder for the quick response team to see into the car in the event of a serious crash, as well as making it more difficult for drivers behind to see hand signals from whoever's ahead.
...actually been a "faithful watcher" since 1987.....
Today it's one hell of a ride
A perfect display of how similar Jarrett and Parsons sound
Damn Cletus I just mowed the infield today.
i agree i miss them
As kornnut43 commented - all these years what I've remembered about this crash was Benny's "c'mon DW..." Believe it or not, I've never seen the clip again until today, and the reason I went looking for it was my memory of Benny's voice saying those words.
yes, he survived and is a race announcer now.
Does anyone else notice how the windows on some of these cars were tinted ( Dale Sr. @3:16 for example) I wonder why they did that or why they dont do that now?
@bmttiger09 Yep. He did. For the late Bobby Hamilton's team. Won quite a few races.
Glad DW was okay. Best announcers in NASCAR ever.
That same Darrell Waltrip car was at the Joe Weatherly Museum At Darlington Raceway, the last time i went there grass stains, dirt, and all.
Wrecks like this usually mark the end of a drivers most competitive racing days. DW soon after this faded into field filler status. Only driver I can think of who returned to form after one of these was Davey Allison but only for a short time, tragically.
Rusty Wallace
i was joking around DW said that when dale crashed =( rip dale lucky #3 best ever
Wow! I never realized how serious of an accident this was! Does anybody know if Waltrip was hurt at all?
I'd like to know if the MRN commentary for this crash can be found anywhere? I bet that was interesting.
ruclips.net/video/JojsYkIxtAs/видео.html
Yup. He still works as an announcer to this day.
Nope. At Talladega, that portion of the track is now paved, but at Daytona, its still grass there. The reason its like that, is because part of the road course (the bus stop chicane in the road course setup) is in that area. Im sure if they did pave over all of that, you could paint lines to make note of where the chicane is at, but for now, its that reason why its still grass.
I used to hate Dale Earnhardt but boy I do miss him now:-(
I stopped watching for two years after he died.
I stopped watching NASCAR the next season after dale's fatal accident.I harbor no ill will, animosity, hard feelings against any NASCAR driver deceased or living. To me,just to finish one of those races even in last place is BIG.
He was the Intimidator.
NASCAR would have died w/out him.
Jeff Gordon would never have gotten great if not for Dale.
He changed the sport and made it better.
Seems you got a lock on asshole.
And Big E could spell 2 letter words.
ASSHOLE
@@Vdalem i never watched another.
Ever.
Sad
Watched Bill Elliot flip there and slide about 1/2 the track on his roof.
I love you tube algorithm brings me here after 13 years ! 2020 see you all, again in 2033
@Scrivener86 You got that right Scrivener86. I grew up with JD McDuffie, in Sanford, NC, and these guys were absolutely the best. I can't imagine how DW and Larry McStupid would handle a situation like that now. They would probably ask Digger what he thought
Am I the only one that gets Parsons and Jarrett vocally confused
the safety crews have improved a lot since then..
talladega is a bit bigger, the straigtaways are identical, but the turns are a bit wider and mroe sweeping at dega.
weaverracing96 i heard you could sit dega rite overtop off dautona an it would be like the next lane up an you get the 16th of a mile that way
@Allwaltrip how about a reference?
Happy retirement DW
RIP
is this the last time someone has flipped in the pepsi or coke zero 400?
@rustyshackleford01 agree
@Sparkz49
Look up Dale Earnhardt Sr.'s Fatal Crash (Live with replays) then go to 3:27 on this video and look in the info below the video
i hope dw is ok isnt he ?
bet that tumbled DW's gyro a bit
if you ask me, hes lucky that thing didnt go flipping like crazy like Davey's did at pocono
yeah, but ive never seen a flip in that area since Waltrips 2004 500 flip. anyway the grass there hasnt really been an issue lately
@zeidy388
it was all grasss at dega back then too, but y duz it matter? this crasg was at tona, what does dega have anything to do with this
Mikey's crash into the edge of that barrier wall was much worse than this...DW just got put in the spin cycle here.
close one #DWwasokay
Michael finished 5th in this race. Drove the 30-car. He was 28 when this happened. Probably cried anyway ;p
yah its been a while seince anyone has gotton upside down in the pepsi 400
Where did Ruttman's car go @ 4:58??
4:58
Hope he will be okay.
nowadays they will only show replays after they know the driver is ok, just imagen how that would be if he was hurt, and watching it over and over again
looks like steve park's crash at pocono in 2002 with dale jr
@zeidy388
he was on the brakes! but that doesnt do crap when your in the grass
that's WICKED
I think the only person to ever flip at night was billy ventruni during the arca race in 2005
They need to make a remote controlled version of NASCAR, so I can see flips again >.>
You also said, "...in killing another legand," though.
I think some crashes are just so unbelievable you kinda have a semi-shock felling
Schrader is second! Holy crap!
So did he win?
Every time I watch this, I'm amazed that Ruttman didn't get upside down as well. As bad as this crash was, if Ruttman would have started tumbing as well...bad news.
@dal3fan88 I agree we need more enthusiasm, this was scary.
@kornnut43
So true.
Joe Reutman used to race in the truck series...i think
That's one way to kill a rental car or is it? Da Dummm
Did we really watch TV through potatoes back in the 90's?
michael was 28 years old at the time.
i think the lord was with him. im happy that crash was not FATAL...
NASCARはサーキットの格闘技だぜ
say it like you mean it, commentators of 1991. nowadays they say it like they really mean it.
About ten times it rolled
I love Davey Allison! Too bad he died too soon!
minor injuries
Geezz....almost all of the driver that he mentions other than DW are all dead..
:58.....oh shit!!!! Thats when Waltrip knew he done fucked up...
i agree he was never the same after that. sad really i was a BIG D.W. fan at the time.
Now its go 48 go!
i agree he was never the same after that. sad really i was a BIG D.W. fan at the time.
Now its go 48 go!
I don't wish harm on anyone but I'm so happy that I don't have to hear Darrell Waltrip's annoying voice and holier than thou attitude.
uhm, he was in the race..
Is that mike joy talking?
should be bob jenkins, ned jarrett and benny parsons. espn telecast. mike joy was employed by tnn during 1991 and worked with buddy baker and neil bonnett.
+MEtallica021319 Bob Jenkins, Ned Jarrett, and Benny Parsons did the telecast for ESPN and TNN Nascar races during the time. Mike Joy did TNT a few time during the summer races.
Boogity,boogity,boogity,,,,Lets go flipping boys !!
