TLDW: He did a ton of research and happened to settle on options from a conpany the sent him free stuff, and that regularly sends him free stuff. So yake it with a grain of salt.
Also, its a block and a cord.

the stock charger is 45 watts, in my testing using an aftermarket 100 watt charger it tops out at around 30 watts. thats with it charging with screen on. turn screen off and charge and it drops to 20-22 watts.

Totally appreciate the explanation of charging at less than 45w for heat management. Not enough reviewers consider the life of the battery being charged.

Theres a 45w anker mini charger thats smaller than those, and charges a little higher. Its my go to travel charger based on its size and pumping out 45w. Charges the deck and powers my portable screen at the same time without issue

I dont think its fair to compare Apple's lack of a charger in the box to the steam deck. 99% of people have a basic 5W charger at home, sure. But you *cannot* use that to charge + power the steam deck. Valve including the charging brick isn't "kind of impressive," it's necessary. This isnt a low power smartphone, its literally a mini gaming PC.

For the price you gotta pay for a phone, there's really no reason for them to not include a charger

    • @adriandotexe
      @adriandotexe 11 месяцев назад

@@TheoHoffmann that's not relevant because the iPhone can charge and be used at the same time just fine using a 5W charger due to how little power it uses. The steam deck _needs_ 15V 3A to properly power and charge during full load. Remember, this is a full fledged x86 computer, not an low power ARM smartphone.

How does your phone not use USB-C in 2024? I tried to keep my phone as long as possible and even it breaked itself at one point. It had a micro USB port on it. Apparently it was the last generation of phone to have one before they switched to type c.

I do have 2x 100w chargers for no reason. The seller just put them in. I cannot utilize the power though. My Samsung S9 for instance charges horrendously slow (for fast charging speeds nowadays) and the Deck utilizes only half or so at most apparently. I've got it a week ago so still somewhat new. But already modded the crap outta the Deck

A word of warning, I used an aftermarket charger from this video & a magnetic connector but unfortunately it damaged my Steam Deck battery & now they won't RMA it. My Deck functions fine when plugged in but now the battery drains from 100% to 0% in about 6 minutes when not plugged in.

It's been a year, but in case anyone else is reading this I wouldn't recommend anything that is using PD or QC with a cable that is not firmly connected, yes that includes magnetic based cable.
Even with normal cable, for anything above 20w, get a good cable that is rated properly. There are laptops or it's batteries that simply got broken because of bad cables.
      Unfortunately, speaking from experience.

Great video, really appreciate it! I did have one question. You mentioned you got a 20ft cable. Did you notice that cable or the brick get hot due to that length? Also did you notice any charging issues at that length? I've personally had really bad luck with 10ft Lightning cables for my phone. Half the time they work. I bought Griffin cables, so they weren't cheap knock offs. I don't want to invest in a long cable if I'm gonna have issues, or end up having a fire hazard haha.
    Thank you!

that's my main complain about the stock charger... in this day and age, detachable cables are safer, better to carry and still works just as better than if the cable was attached. I'm sorry valve but... that stock charger is not well designed. actually.. every handheld stock charger? :\

Charging at 30w should make your battery lifespan longer. Fast chargers for any device will stress and shorten the life of the battery. Also a cooler deck is beneficial to all of the hardware in the deck.

But when the deck goes to sleep so does that plug-in so the Deck will resume charging
