For those wondering, the other nocturnal parrot is the night parrot. They are endemic to Australia, where their natural habitat is the spinifex grass which still dominates much of the dry, dusty Australian interior. Because of their unique lifestyle, it is one of the most elusive and mysterious birds in the world, with no confirmed sightings of the bird between 1912 and 1979, leading to speculation that it was extinct. Sightings since 1979 have been extremely rare. It is one of only four ground-dwelling parrots in the whole world, the other three being the closely related Ground parrot (found in Australia), the somewhat closely related Antipodes parakeet (from NZ's Antipodes Islands), and of course the Kākāpō which is unrelated. Also, that clip of Sirocco doing that is so iconic. The fact that other guy is just observing and letting it happen is pure gold. I have seen that hundreds of times and those hundreds of times it made me cry laughing. The commentary by Fry is just god tier; "you are being shagged by a rare parrot" it's just poetic and hilarious at the same time.

Whatever they "resurrect" will have a hard time as a functioning wild creature without parents to teach them "how to act"... see the kakapo that liked human heads in the video for an intelligent creature to not be raised by it's own kind. It's like, if some alien race found human DNA and created a human, without a mom or dad to teach it how to interact with the world, the "human" would fail at life without heavy intervention.
Slight correction: The bird you showed at the top left at 0:15 to represent the New Zealand parrots isn't actually a member of the New Zealand parrots or Strigopidae family. That is a baby Malherbe's parakeet (kākāriki karaka) and while they are from New Zealand, they're from the Psittaculidae family which are Old World parrots. That said, the reason the Strigopidae family in NZ are their own thing is they diverged from the other parrots around 82 million years ago when New Zealand broke off from Gondwana, while the ancestors of the genera Nestor and Strigops diverged from each other between 60 and 80 million years ago! Out of the Strigopidae family, the kea are my favorites. They are found only on the South Island (though fossils show they were once found on the North Island too) and are one of, if not the only alpine parrot as they can be found breeding at heights of 1,600 meters (5,200 ft) above sea level and higher! For food, they go after beetle larvae, land snails, other birds, and even go after mammals like sheep and rabbits! Not only that but they are also exceptionally intelligent. Researchers set them a series of intelligence tests based around probabilities and social cues. They found that kea can perform better than monkeys, showing abilities only previously seen in great apes such as humans and chimpanzees!
Person from New Zealand here! The reason we have so many flightless birds is because when New Zealand was separated from the rest of the world (Pangea stuff) we didn’t have any predators to the birds. So they didn’t adapt to having the ability to fly.
It’s not that they didn’t evolve flying, they already could fly. It’s more that they lost the ability because they didn’t need to anymore! And they got bigger because of it making flying impossible.
@@trilobite3120I live in NZ and due to their critically endangered status, you'd be hard pressed to find one in zoos or whatnot. They only live on protected offshore islands and in a fenced in sanctuary at the mainland. Not even sure if you can see them in person
@@AcidicPlant I was actually having an argument about this elsewhere in the comments of this video. Someone was saying that just by living in New Zealand and traveling fairly widely you could easily see one, which I'm pretty certain isn't true. @@trilobite3120yeah, there's no way you could see one merely by travelling around NZ. Your only hope would be to see Sirocco himself if he happens to be going on tour around the country (has happened at times) or if you were working with the relevant team in the Department of Conservation. The person you were arguing with was probably thinking of kea, which are also endangered, but more common and far more conspicuous.

You think the Kakapo had a close brush with extinction? Look up the Chatham Island Black Robin. At their darkest hour there were only 5 individuals left, only one of whom (Old Blue) was a female. Today there's over 300 of them, and all are descended from Old Blue. Oddly enough, there's been no recorded problems with inbreeding despite the genetic bottleneck. It's one of the greatest conservation success stories in history.

They should look into the hats they use for California Condor... sessions. Could have saved problems. Well, maybe if they also included a Nintendo Switch for something to do as the events happen. Maybe have a power adapter on hand...
There have been instances of kea finding sheep that were stuck in deep snow, then sitting on them and digging into their backs to eat the fat around their kidneys - often while the sheep were still alive. Up until some time in the 70s, farmers were allowed to shoot kea. There was a bounty paid by the government on kea beaks, and there was even a special classification for "kea guns" (basically a sawn off shotgun) in our firearms legislation. Now they're endangered.
I think they should evolve big muscular arms for protection
great idea
Consider the following: Laser eyes.
Maybe a stronger chest bone too, to anchor the arms into place?
@@marcopohl4875 yes stronger arms and muscles back to flight
