I’m a marine biologist out of the National Oceanographic Centre in the UK. I’ve always wanted to rescue a lobster and look after it. I’m living my dream through Leon. Might I suggest some small rocky substrate pushed into the crushed coral, so Leon has something to scrape his rear walking legs on.

There are no channels these days that I click “like“ before I even watch the videos of anymore, except for this one. I love this story so very much, and I love Leon (aka “Mr. Hungry, Hungry Hippo” these days lol).
I adore Leon’s caretaker/guardian Brady for how genuinely empathetic and caring he is with our lil’ guy here. He is taking such great care of Leon, from not only saving him from heinously being somebody’s dinner, but the quality time he has put in with him (down to even doing physical therapy with Leon when his claws weren’t functioning properly).
This is such a huge educational channel for people who eat meat to understand that _ALL_ sentient animals are unique individuals and deserve the right to live out their lives and be treated with respect. I think this channel has the capability to really make _A LOT_ of people think deeply about what they put on their dinner plates. We can all choose to live very healthy lives without causing needles suffering/death of innocent sentient beings...
Leon doesn’t know this, but he has quickly become a mascot for animal rights, and bless his lil’ heart for it! He is a true fighter/survivor - I hope he continues to thrive and be happy in the care of Brady, a most wonderful guardian! ☺️ I’m sure Leon knows by now that Brady is a trustful companion/a wonderful representative of our human species, and hopefully the horrible memories of the other humans that treated him so damned terribly will fade in time.
I’m beyond grateful Brady has shown him that not all of us humans are awful/dark hearted/careless; and Leon can see that compassionate Brady here has tried his very best to continue to make up for the bad/conditioned humans that captured him/abused him/signed his death warrant (even though Leon has sadly lost his freedom in the process - which unfortunately can’t be reversed at this point [but it’s done for Leon’s best interest]).
*BIG APOLOGIES FOR WRITING SO MUCH!* I simply can’t help but gush about how much I appreciate Brady and Leon in this warm-hearted wholesome story that is generously being shared to us/the world, to raise human consciousness/compassion. I’ve lost so much faith in humanity, so I very much cherish “small” things like this which helps restore it even in the tiniest amount (it may seem small to us, but it means _EVERYTHING_ to Leon/his world/his life & well being). Even if it was only just aquatic animals that people choose to show more compassion for, we just might be able to save our oceans.

Now, I enjoy my share of chowder and bouillabaisse, but even if they're tasty they deserve a good life as any animal does; and with their natural habitat under constant bombardment, with the industrial nature and scale of the sourcing, with such inhospitable and inhumane tank conditions, and with unsustainable practices threatening ocean ecosystems as whole, it's refreshing to see them giving this guy a good life. May it be long and full of clams!
There are ethical ways of sourcing animal protein from sustainable and ecosystem preserving hunting/trapping, interdependent ecosystem decentralized farming, roadkill, and foraging. We have historically played an important role in ecosystems, but we exceeded that role long ago. Meat was never such a large part of our diets.
Our modern systems, animal infrastructure, and industrialized practices systematise the torture of billions of animals day in and day out. They deprive ecosystems of regulation and diversity, and as a result destabilize them. But that is a result of our current mode of opperation, our popular methodology. I think blame is often wrongly put on the killing or consumption of animals, those aren't the *inherently* bad actions at play. And people aren't morally culpable for the actions of a multibillion dollar industry because they buy their products out of necessity or habit. In our modern system of capitalism supply is a director of demand, and less so the other way around. People buy meat because it's there, and because it is wasteful to let it spoil. With how much food is already wasted two thirds of product being burned or burried before market to control prices, we can certainly do without more waste at the sale end. The industry is a big issue. And even smaller, local, non-factory farms have big issues with the treatment of animals.
We need to revolutionize the way animals play a role in our lives, how we affect theirs substantially as their caregivers, the role we must play in the ecosystem and the effect our practices have on them, positive and negative, and how we approach the task of feeding the world with as little impact as possible. And in this last way it goes far, far beyond the farming of animals alone, but aggriculture as a whole.

When Leon is taking his seaweed with him, he's probably thinking, "You can't see me! I'm seaweed!" But, it might be possible that lobsters don't possess object permanence so it is entirely possible that he thinks it sufficiently obscures him. Planting the seaweed is another matter. He might be genuinely decorating his habitat. Tarantulas in captivity have been known to essentially erect cairn stones around their burrows or arrange piles of pebbles by color and size out of sheer boredom. Most people don't think of invertebrates as having sapience unless it's a squid or an octopus but I'm convinced that the lights are on and someone's home. You actually have to be rather smart to be bored in the first place.

Leon seems to be thriving and so happy. I don't think you should ever free an animal just like that, after it has been kept by humans for over a year and after it has been so happy being a pet. And he looks pretty young. As you said, he might starve or be killed by another Lobster before adjusting.

Hurts my heart to see him in the grocery store box, having given up on life, knowing his likely awful fate. He got so incredibly lucky. It was always hard to see the lobster tanks in grocery stores before, but now I can't even enter the vicinity. Leon is so clearly sentient and watching him find safety and come back to life has been such a gift. Your intent may not have been to advocate for animals, but exposing the realness of his intellectual capacities and desire to live is education that's so necessary. It's great to see Leon thriving and becoming the big beautiful boy he is. The word "zoomies" is a cat expression here in the UK. It's when you cat zooms around the house bouncing off walls and furniture at stupid o'clock in the morning. They run up and down the stairs and through rooms where to door isn't closed. I'm surprised your cats don't have this behaviour as it's common here. Our cat woke us everyday a 4am doing this, but at 21 years old she's likes her sleep but will still wake us early because she wants her breakfast. 🙂

Little info on lobsters. When lobsters are being caught by fishers, the only ones that are caught are males, of a certain size. Females have a notch taken out of their tail, so when other fishers go for more lobsters and they see the notch, they toss the females back in the water. As for males when they are caught, the fishers use a tool to measure from the eye socket to the first crease, if the length is to small or to big the lobsters get to go back.

I was on holiday about 25 years ago in Portugal. In a supermarket we found a huge old lobster, (biggest I ever saw) he seemed to have a sadness, maybe knowledge of his fate. So big we thought he must be very old. So, we bought him, took him a few hundred yards off the coast on a surf board and let him go. He swam away and was gone. I hope he made it safely to the bottom and in time forgot the ordeal, but anyways it felt really good to pluck such a beautiful creature from death row.

I think Leon might be happier with a soft blue light rather than the full light you have on now. It would show off his beautiful patterns he used to proudly wear in the ocean 🌊.
Edit: While diving in Jamaica, I saw a group of 3 lobsters all light blue, white, and black. One was huge compared to the others, and their antennae were super long and made them 2 or 3 x as tall. In their habitat they look majestic compared to all the sea life surrounding them.

"Zoomies" is a cat/dog owner term (formally called FRAP for "frenetic random activity periods") from when the furballs go zooming around the place out of an overabundance of energy. If it's happening all the time, it can be a sign of understimulation, but it's also seen in totally happy pets who either just have too much energy or got worked up by something.

    • @anyascelticcreations
      @anyascelticcreations 2 года назад +7

I remember when it was called FRAP. I was told that stood for frequent random acts of play.
My Boxer is very good at that. But she only does it when I specifically tell her outside that it's time for zoomies. So, I guess it's not really frequent or random for her.
She loves it. But she's usually only interested in doing it if I laugh and encourage her and tell her how cute she is. Otherwise she stops zooming after a good run or a few bounces and goes back to sniffing things.
And if I'm feeling particularly unwell, she won't zoom at all. She seems to want to match my energy. So sweet.

Zoomies is when your cat is relaxing and then suddenly is on alert for no perceptible reason and bolts off, runs up and down the house, tumbles around and/or shadowboxes for a few minutes until all the energy is worn out again. Happens often after they poop, I think that’s a useful evolutionary trait to immediately get away from their smelly leavings which could attract predators. In Georgia we also might call it “having a (conniption) fit” and “getting a wild hair”, I think you’re probably familiar with those.
