      I felt the iSolo added too many overtones. It was almost like having a resonator cone added to the guitar. I like the K&K with the Lyric best, with the Fishman & Lyric second.

  • @ArielAr
    @ArielAr 3 года назад +1

    Hello Jason ! You did a great job in showing the differences. One thing you could do that would be helpful in some near future is to record mic on one channel ( say..on the left channel) and a piezo on the right. By recording simultaneously the different sounds on right and left, then someone can train a deep learning neural network to "convert" the "ugly" piezo sound into the more beautiful mic-sound.

  • @icullumber
    @icullumber 7 лет назад +4

    Good video. However, it seems to do a little bit of a disservice to the K&K. The L.R Baggs Lyric is a microphone and should have fairly low impedance. The iSolo is also a microphone, but it has its own preamp and circuitry. The Fishman is a piezo pickup; however, it is active and equipped with a preamp. All of these present a fairly low impedance to the audio input that you are using - whether it be an amp, or an audio mixer, or audio recording interface. And then there is the K&K. The piezo transducers by themselves have a relatively large impedance - upwards of 200K ohms - and it doesn't come with a standard preamp. If you aren't using a Hi-Z audio input, an input with 1M ohm or more of impedance you are going to get exactly what you got. Booming lows and almost no highs. I'm sure that the K&K is a fine pickup system, but unless you properly match the impedance between the pickups and the audio input it won't be able to achieve its full potential.

    • @jasondswanson
      @jasondswanson  7 лет назад +1

      Ivon Cullumber honestly, I agree with you 100%. I do believe my interface was a hi-z one, which lead me to think it could do the K&K justice. My other guitar has a built in pure preamp, and the difference is obvious. I just ordered an outboard K&K preamp and may do a video demonstrating the difference between it and going without it. I really think all of these pickups are great, with their own pros and cons. That being said, in my other guitar I use the K&K, because I really do think it gives the best result.

    • @maraviyoso8473
      @maraviyoso8473 6 лет назад +1

      Actually, the K&K sounds 100 times better in real life than on this video. And yes, it needs some EQ tweaking; but the results are amazing.

    such a good comparison . i think lyric is the best . knk mini is low db sound and little response, isolo is great tone but have lots of noise and overheadroom. fishman ust is piezo thing but most front and directical sound . it is inportant when you live , lyric have nice tone and clean , but little bit background sound room . not front . i think this is why lrbaggs anthem is the best pickup .

  • @kirkp_nextguitar

  • @JamesBartholomewMusic
    @JamesBartholomewMusic 8 лет назад +8

    Ah this is really interesting! I've always preferred the K&K pickup in a live situation, and the LR Baggs mic in a live situation, but I was under the impression a pure mini & lyric couldn't both be fitted as they are both on the bridgeplate! I might go with that setup up my next guitar, although the one thing I wonder about is phase? Do you invert either of the signals when using them together? My thinking is that, for example, when the soundboard is moving inward, that's a negative displacement of the Pure Mini and positive displacement of the Lyric, unless LR Baggs already invert it as it would normally be used with a piezo anyway, but maybe that's just thinking too much about it...

    • @jasondswanson
      @jasondswanson  8 лет назад +3

      They're both great products. I recall finding phase issues a few years ago when I first installed them, but recently i've been combining the K&K and the Lyric for live use and the result has been amazing. It may need a phase flip, but the when using a boss line selector to mix the sounds at about 80% K&K & 20% lyric, it sounds great.
      My placement of the lyric is actually different than what LR Baggs recomends, but it still sounds great.
      In the past I''ve had a hard time getting a great sound without a lot of gear using these 2 pickups together, but now i'm using a boss line selector as a mini-mixer and a zoom G3, which has parametric & graphic EQ's.

    • @jasondswanson

      You've got to plug up the input with a dead cable, and use the returns of the a & b loops as inputs 1 and 2. Does that make sense?

      Care to explain this in a more detailed way, Jason ? Then you output what, the single output or the two sends ? Is it blended at the single output ?
      PS : I have the Lyric in a Larrivée and like the idea of combining that with a pure mini K&K. I just have to get used to the idea of having a second jack drilled into it.

    To me, an acoustic pickup is all about emphasis. Does it emphasize the transient/picking (like the undersaddle), the strings’ presence like the lyric, etc. Any decent pickup can be eq’d to your tastes but if you don’t like what the pickup emphasizes, you’ll never get the sound you’re after. I’ve had great success with fishman’s systems and I’ve played the k&k many times on my buddy’s D-15 and they sound fantastic...almost the best that I’ve heard. None is “better”...it’s all about what you’re after.

      Thank you, i love talking about this stuff, and I'm still learning about all of this myself!
      As for using non-proprietary preamps : it depends
      For the K&K, matching the impedance is an important issue. I just recently purchased an outboard K&K preamp for this guitar, because I thought it might sound better because it was designed for the K&K.
      The fishman aura is most likely not a good fit, but I could be wrong. I know that using the aura mic modeling is something they only recommend for undersaddle pickups.
      Another preamp for the K&K that people love is the Red Eye. It seems like a perfect fit for a K&K.

    you should try the journeytech EP001K, I tried all these expensive pickups and none of them gave me the sound I was looking for, when I decided to give a try to the journeytech I was shocked by the roundness of the sound and the dynamics of the touch of the strings; and it's just 35 euros, And i can't even imagine the sound I cuold achieve if only I had an acoustic preamp to pair with it

    This is a great video! Genius to have them all in the same guitar, and thank you for the combinations portion, that was very cool. any opinion on how they each do at higher stage volumes? I have heard the k&k & lyric can get testy when very loud?

    L.R. Baggs, and iSolo, all pick up good sounds!! iSolo feels like a little bit better than L.R Baggs..

      Also, I see diferente prices on Isolo, could send the link of the one you have where I can buy not so expensive? - I ve seen $412 an $250 but I don’t know if it’s the same cause the giant gap price.

    Since the Fishman came installed in the guitar, I bet there was an EQ on board the guitar. (Hi, lo, and Mids). Am I right or wrong on that assessment? That seemingly would explain the rich textures I hear in my headphones as I listen to the Fishman as compared to the other pickups which don’t have the onboard EQ. The other pickups would get their rich tones from outboard preamps and EQs etc.

    Hi Jason great demo! Do you have to use an outboard pre-amp for the iSolo?

    I have no idea how to combine those preamp system together. External Microphone is the best to describe the sound of the guitar. Preamp are design for on stage performance. Anyway, thanks for sharing.

    Hi Jason, I guess Cloud Vocal bought isolo. I dont think they've always owned it.Anyway, I notice the price is higher now. Do know of any improvements they have made? Do you know how long the battery lasts before recharging. Also have you found any problems with feedback -different stage set ups?

    Aloha Jason Great video Thanks! Just wondering you can install these and then do single output and also blend them. Also use a stereo guitar cable etc. Lastly what is you favorite pickup for the most natural sound? (K&K?) Thanks for your response!

    • @jasondswanson
      @jasondswanson  7 лет назад

      EL Holt I have the K&K connected to the "ring" portion of the fishman output jack, and the Lyric has its own output jack.
      I've mixed these together using many different things. The cheapes being a boss line selector (only mixes 2 signals) and the most being my Line 6 Helix, which basically works as a mixer.
      In my main guitar I use the K&K pure. The most natural is the iSolo and then the Lyric.
      K&K is has some of the "punch" of an UST, and also some of the natural sound somewhat like a microphone.

      Ola Jason! Thanks for quick response. I am looking at the IRig Acoustic Stage (I have UST in some of my guitars already) and probably the LR Baggs Anthem SL for my Martin J40. Cheers!

    Thank you for this! I have a Lyric installed in a Guild D55, and I thought the nasal quality was because of the guitar somehow, or perhaps my installation. I hear exactly the same mid-heavy tone in your demo. I'm sure there is a guitar which will benefit from that mid push, but my Guild isn't it. I think the K&K really needed eq to stand up to the others, but it had a more natural attack.
    Very cool, and I wish more demos were done this objectively.

      I have an all mahogany martin that is a very dark sounding guitar, I have even put stainless acoustic strings which brighten it up slightly but the Lyric really brings out the "wood" sound. Definitely not a spruce top but the Lyric works well with dark guitars.

    How could you install both the K&K and the lyric properly in the same guitar? They occupy the same space.

    Nice job except for not using the K&K Preamp for the Pure. I can't find anyplace on the web that sells the iSolo. I think it is brilliant and by far the best sound. Where did you get yours? Or where can I buy one?

      Hmm, I can't find it either. I'll send them a message and hopefully can get back to you with helpful information soon.
      Since the product is fairly new, I know they are constantly changing and improving the iSolo.

    If under saddle pickups effect tone transfer then why have one, plus having one installed and having the three button mini the tone transfer is still effected so your not really getting the true response from the mini.

    iSolo wins, I don't care how expensive the piezo systems are they still sound like piezo systems. iSolo i can actually hear you guitar's true sound. Brilliant product - great demo.
