Country Coach Engine Access Removal...How Hard Could it Be?

- Here is a quick video I made to an emergency mobile call to West Phoenix. The Country Coach Magna was there being inspected for a buyer and Empire needed access to the top of the engine. They wanted to break the tiles out so the seller asked me to open the cover for them. Here is my experience just trying to get to the CAT engine. Thanks for watching!
That is crazy! So glad my Cummins is under the bed!!
I share your engine preference too.
Is it with the diamonds, furs and other jewelry? lol I understand, just at first read it is funny.
I've watch many many of your videos but have been really short in saying how much I appreciate them. You know the real value here is not that you did this job (and very nicely) but sharing all your experience. Perhaps you haven't done this exact job before but your years of experience helped you get through it and that is really what we as viewers (at least me) enjoy!
I've this type of work NOT ON BUSES but house remodeling stuff and working on cars and trucks - pickups - and the first time is a wee bit of messing around but the second job or one like it is a "just go in and do it" kind of thing. As a previous poster said - your sense of humor is great. Blessings
The owner of this coach will appreciate your attention to detail. Nice job.
Thank you very much!
@@AZExpert details cost money 💰 though
That was a wise thing for the buyer to have this inspection done. This is a Acert regin engine, the twin turbos and the exhaust burner are a clue. The long haul truckers hate these engines because of the problems. It is a lot easier to work on these in a Peterbuilt or a KW. These put out a lot of heat during regen, so the owners need to be aware of where they park when they are close to regen mileage. The good news is that the Cat mechanics are well aware of what to look for and an RV does not get the hard service of a truck.
Wow - US Army! As if your stock wasn't already sky high, it just ratcheted up even more. Many thanks for your service.
As I'm seeing this, I keep thinking to myself DD60 Series in a Prevost, pre DEF.
I'm very surprised that preDEF is not a more sought after feature buyers are looking for.
Thank you for helping keep us safe wile you were in the Service Brother that was a very good job 👏 us Army here hope you have a safe week
It's difficult for me to accept praise for national defense as I was just an Army mechanic that served a short enlistment in a quiet time between any conflicts, but I do appreciate and share your support. Thank you!
Good job ! Nice to see your experience and talent at work ! I wish that diesel pushers had more easy access to their engines!
Nice! As you have discovered, Country Coach did some amazing cabinetry. I am glad you recognized the subtle difference in the tile floor. Hidden in plain sight!
The Prevost is designed first and foremost as a commercial vehicle. It is paramount that mechanics can access the engine in time of need, in order to return the coach to service as soon as possible.
Well, if you are just dealing with passenger seating, hiding the access matters not. But, in a custom coach, we get cool cabinetry and furnishings.
I discovered this dealing with my friend's Country Coach, accessing the Detroit 8v92 front end. I took my time, we disassembled the bed cabinetry, and I am very impressed. They built the cabinetry with the goal of being serviceable.
My bone to pick with corporate mergers and time? Good luck getting information about details on the Country Coach. Unobtanium!!
Sorry, but Country Coach built some absolutely superb conversions. In this video, you can see what I am talking about.
But, here is my strongest suggestion, albeit late in the game. I was a manufacturer back in the day, so to speak. On the sidelines, I must qualify this. There is absolutely nothing more sacred, in my mind, than supporting the people that decided to buy and support your product. Support is paramount, folks. IF YOU SUPPORT YOUR CUSTOMERS, you do more for the value of your product than millions of dollars in advertising and marketing could even DREAM of doing. Truth.
Letting the end customer know how to access that engine? Priceless.
There should have been a placard in that cabinet! Remove the drawer, and voila! A diagram for all time. Guess they did not think of that.
Great statement. James is a walking library of info. His approach to, " I don't know what I'm doing, but, we are going in and will figure it out on the fly" is really the only approach to take on most coaches I'd say. The scariest thing here is the TILE! one chip and you have to give the owner a Valium. Excellent work on the access though. very interesting watch!
Well said sir 😊
By '09 Country Coach used aluminum extrusions around the opening as well as the tile hatch. Only a thin top coat was applied to cover the seam. Also, a pair of suction cups are very handy when lifting the tile hatch. It's heavy as well as fragile so prying is the last thing to do. Nice job of feeling your way through the unknown, James. I had to do my learning on the side of the road when a turbo actuator went out on my Cummins ISM.
Man nothing is easy on an RV is it. Awesome job on this one. Definitely looked tricky to me. But you made it look easy. It's probably why your the go to guy in the RV world.
Thanks for watching! :)
Ole world craftsmanship 🇺🇸
Thanks for watching!! :)
I lot of work to service the engine. It shows what type of craftsman you are, great Video ✌🏽
I'm impressed you were able to do this, BY YOURSELF, WHILE FILMING.
Very interesting, Love we got to discover the way it came apart as you did. LOL Excellent caulking job.
Thank you very much!
Well OK, I’m so glad I saw this! This has tipped the scale for me, no rear engine diesel! Super C is looking better and better. Thank you very much.
Well, that wasn't my hope, Super C do have good engine access though.
AZ Expert. Very good! Carpentry isn't in my wheelhouse so I'm very impressed by your adeptness in disassembling the cabinet. I either wouldn't have figured it out or it would have taken me days to do so. You certainly are an expert.
I found your use of the word "carcass" to be an interesting choice. I say this not out of amusement or as being a sideways insult, but as a person that enjoys writing. In part, it was an interesting choice as I've never heard "carcass" used in relation to furniture. I'm a newer subscriber and I have enjoyed all of your videos that I've seen so far. I have an appreciation for your dialog and the concise method format of your videos. When there're two turbos on an engine, one is smaller and spools up faster allowing for much less lag waiting for the bigger turbo to spool up. You found an excellent match for the caulking color. But how they ever got "Haystack" for that color I can't begin to imagine. On this end it just looks like Taupe.
If I buy a coach (especially a Beaver), I am hiring him. He is simply the best there is. Country coach is doomed if Winnebago owns them.
LOL thanks
I would love to see a video of the access through a north south bed, looks pretty straight forward, but always better to see what others have done before tackling it yourself.
James thank you thank you thank you this will be very helpful for future Country coach owners without support from the factory
Thanks for watching!
Your sense of humor is interesting 🤠
Sometimes :)
At least you don’t have to pull cab off to work on a 6.7 Ford motor.Talk about engineering!!!
That could be a future project I have on a 6.4 , but yes its ridiculous. Thanks!
The cab is meant to be removed.
My shop charges 1.5 hours to pull the cab. They prefer working on it vs. hunching over a grill.
Nice. I find your videos remarkably interesting. I assume this is also a good technique to show your customers what you find along the way and to give yourself some insurance evidence. Keep them up, good channel. 👌
it is nice to have evidence of prior issues, but I've never had to use it for that. Thanks!
Wow! That was a ton of work!!! Great job James!
Yes it was! Thanks
Nice video. Thanks for posting it. It is good to see how it is done properly.
You're welcome, thanks for watching
James, you are a craftsman deluxe! That is the craziest thing to access engine I have seen ! Terrible engineering
Can't help but appreciate the quality of your work... interesting video! thanks James
Hey, Thanks for watching! :)
Great job James! If that were my coach I would install a plexiglass door on that floor!
Thanks for watching!
Wow, awesome job James! Amazing problem solving!
Thanks
Beautiful Coach for full time living, but that access is like a weekend process to P.M. the coach. Cat's seem to be pretty bulletproof on the lower end , but I'm seeing that the rocker arm rollers tend to wear out once in a while, clogged injectors too are a maintenance issue that would pop up. It's all accessible right there. Pretty convenient really. Surgical strike though in that you want none of the greases, fuel any of that in the coach.
Thanks for watching, Timothy!
I think I'm going to say this on all your videos. You're a brave man!
I try
Very interesting. Thank you for the video James. Happy trails!
Thanks for watching! :)
What a nightmare! Great job and a huge amount of patience!
Thanks for watching
Wow....thanks for posting this! Something to look for when looking at a coach...engine access!
At least after all that work, there is decent engine access to the top side.
Glad it was helpful!
Looks good ! Trying to figure out why someone would give a thumbs down .
As with most jobs they are very simple. Not all, but most. GReat job
Thanks for watching! :)
Excellent James......"You da Man".......
Thank you!
I used to be a final finisher on the F22 Stealth Fighter Jet. We placed a nylon cord in the gap before adding the final caulk in the access panels so we could take a tool and find the string and use as a rip cord to remove most of the caulk around the perimeter of the panel. Just a thought
Thats a cool story! I'm not sure if that would work in this application but it's a thought
Those were beautiful coaches for sure. I've had two diesel pushers one Cat one Cummins. The engines could be rolled out of the chassis were it to be necessary. It was bolted in of course but access was certainly better than this one.
Nicely done!
Thanks Rick
What type of DP, with a rolling enginge? After seen this , i would not buy a DP. I am at the mercy of the mechanics. I can not even imagine having to change an injector or a turbo...there is not space, u probably need special tools to access.
good video and thanks for your service
Thanks for watching! :)
I am new to your channel thanks to an awesome referral from the man who just showed us a motor home with an outdoor porch, Andrew Steele! I was really holding my breath as you worked with that heavy tile and grouted in access panel. It was more of an entire engine hood than an access panel!
It was a big heavy door. I'm glad you are enjoying the channel
AZ Expert I am, very much so! I’m definitely going to watch more.
Thank you for convincing me that a Super C is preferable to a bus by a long shot. Wondering if this nonsense is common to all diesel pushers? What kind of an engineer in their right mind would design something as inconvenient to service like this?
I must say I really like this guy ..
I’ve dealt with many many Mechanic
In the trucking industry- RV is a bit different
Takes way longer lol!!
Having to learn that all over again
Also that’s completely insane you have to do all that work just to get into the motor ..
5th wheel and get urself a semi to pull it
thank you, and that's good advice
Holy Cow...end of statement.
lol
I love that you work out of a fuel efficient vehicle!
Thank you...I always say the Prius has been the best pickup I've owned.
AZ Expert You are a very smart man!
Sometimes!
Great work and fun viewing on nice coach
Thanks Brian!
Well.....that was easy !!!! ha ha It was easy watching it on my computer. Good job James.
In fairness, it was an inside job out of the heat with the shop coolers going so it wasn't difficult work, just crazy as you never want to be responsible for destroying something that can not easily be replaced. Thanks!
@@AZExpert Thats why we make the big bucks !!!!!
Ho. Lee. Cow. Let's put the engine access under tile. Sounds like a great idea... Remind me to always check the ease of engine access next time I buy a Class A diesel pusher.
It is silly, but of course the floor plan and beauty is what sells the unit not ease of access.
WOW great job.
Glad you liked it!
So much for the red button under the toilet seat you hit and the whole thing hydraulically lifts ....LOL🧐⚔️🏴☠️
That would be awesome
Premier RV service in junction city Oregon is a great source of info on country coach's
Thanks for the info
So glad my Cummins is under my bed.
So glad I have a red top Cummins
ISM.
I also prefer Cummins
You work the caulk gun better with one hand than I do with 2 hands. LOL thanks
Loads of experience
You save many a ass with these videos.
thank you!
Another great video James!
Thanks again!
Cat did go to a twin turbo set up. It was almost impossible to get any mpg out of that engine. I believe it was the only down falls ot the cat engine.
10mm and 12mm sockets ,,man I loose them all the time ,,, great vid brother ,,,,,Ride that dog viking man
They really are so easy to lose. Thanks!
“Oh this looks like fun.” Said no person ever…
HAHAHAHAHAH
an ice cube is a good way to leave a clean grout line, since the silicone won't stick to the ice cube.
Don't always have one of those
well that was insane
Glad Im not the only one that thinks so.
I am surprised at diesel shops that know so little about diesel pushers. They may know the diesel engine but it is like they have never worked on a motor home before. The 2 turbos is pretty common for a while now, one is high pressure one low. Heavy diesel and Adept Ape (youtube) have videos about it that can explain it a lot better than I would.
I never knew that about the turbos. RVs chassis straddle the line of "not my job" It get worse with air bag suspensions that have air leveling controls on them.
sequential turbo. small one feeds the big one. helps with turbo lag :)
Great Video.......
Glad you enjoyed it
@@AZExpert Hey thanks for reply i appreciate it. I wanted to ask ive got a 2004 National Dolphin 5375 , was wondering if you have any Video's on it ? like for roof or water issues behind bathroom sink wall ? or windshield leak issues ? Or going over fron dash " like " what the diff toggles operate ? Thanks again Darrin Elsey ! riverside ca
that was scary!
Right?
Amazing, what patience
Thank you!
Excellent video. Now I’m going to go look to buy a 2006 Country Coach🤪. 2006 = less smog, but probably didn’t involve RVs
:)
IMO... this is EXACTLY why I would buy a Super C diesel. Complete access in the front... where it belongs... and you even have crash protection as a bonus.
There are upsides to a Super C
More expensive things are intricately put together. That's what high dollar stuff does. I'm not saying it's bad or good it just comes with the territory . If you can pay for an $800,000 coach you can certainly pay for the labor..
I believe it's the rear bathroom is the reason why it's designed like this
I think you have a very good point. thanks!
I love this video but I would have fixed the motor I loved cats I was in construction for 47 yrs and cat motors where in everything on site work and I fixed them Thanks
"Luckily this isn't too complicated!"
LOL
Every interesting, seems like there could have been an easier design by Country Coach for removal of the cover. 👍😎🇺🇸🦅
This is the type of guy who could make millions in his lifetime with his brain. Even more if he has his own bussiness
Fellows , think back when it was buit. Why it was designed this way. The CC was 800k while the average price of a house was 250k. Brand new and under a warranty, nobody care about how difficult or expensive engine access was, the more difficult the better, . Only now, that this coaches have gone down in price to 200k, we care, why?
Having said that , some DP have roll on /off engines, that is a great way think about engine access.
Great video....that looked like a lot of work to me.....lol
Yes it was, but mostly relazing as I didn't have to fix the engine. Just open and close a door....which now that I say it that way does seem silly. Thanks!
That's ridiculous. If I had that I would convert that to some sort of easily removable hatch.
I agree.
You do good work!!
Thank you!
Great job
Thank you!!
Would it be easier to get the coach on a lift and lower the engine for major maintenance? Requires a lot of specialized equipment clearly.
Lifts aren't always an option
Wow!
Just curious what was your time to R & R the access cover just to get to the engine?
watching things like this makes me want a Super C for my next unit.
That's just one reason I just flip right passed CC when I was looking for my DP
Hey, Thanks for watching! :)
Nice job.
Thanks!
Is it possible to pull the head out thur that opening. Thanks.

I have a 2005 Monaco diplomat with 80000 miles ,the windshield has been put back in many times ,and now i have straps on top and bottom holding it in place ,is the any thing I can do to fix it right ,
. thank you
Why hasn't someone figured out how to have a rear diesel engine that can be on a sliding rack out the back of the bus or RV?
Having an engine that slides out isn't really a possibility---they weigh a TON
Wow. You are a pro
thank you!
Wow, you are the Man!!
I had to watch again to believe it.
It should make it easier for the next guy to see this...I was not completely confident I wasn't going to break something
Thank you
You're welcome
What needs to be checked on the engine? Maybe produce a video on that?
I'll keep it in mind--I generally don't do chassis work though
Why wouldn’t you heat an engine cover?!
fucking hilarious! Bumming me out a little bit though, I was really hoping to score this exact model same year in good health. that engine access is a nightmare tho....
That looked to be a Acert Caterpillar.
I try to stay far away from engine work
Twin turbo means it is ACERT engine. First attempt for emissions
Thank you. I was not aware of that. I know this one had "emissions control issues" in the past which is why I was removing the cover.
That sure is a lot of work just to “raise the hood”!
Thanks. You show me what to avoid in an rv in addition to how work on them. How many hours to R&R the cover and cabinets?
Maybe 15 minutes to remove and install the cabinets. Cutting through and not breaking the floor took the most time. Thanks!
Total job time? Maybe you can start doing RV reviews worst to best for quality and reliability like Scotty Kilmer does for cars? Keep us subs from making mistakes.
You work your ass off. Always ends up right.
I'm always trying not to
@@AZExpert LOL
2stage turbocharger ?
What would you charge for that. Seems like a lot of time spent. But you do great work.
This was a dealer support job.It took a couple hours to remove and re-install mostly due to the location of the shop.
So is this issue only on the coaches with the rear bath? Would a rear bedroom be infinitely better for engine access / maintenance?
I've seen bedrooms just as bad, Monaco usually has very good access.
may have been a little painful, but the quality of the build says a lot... I would rather have a little more labor getting in than a lot more continual repairs in a p.o.s. quality build. anything after 2008 is a pile of crap. People spend 150 to 200k on a new coach and rebuild it 10 time over in the first 3 years. I will buy ANOTHER pre 2008 high end coach in the near future. Monaco, HR or Country Coach. 150k will buy a killer 500k pre 2008 coach that's just broken in. Don't fear 100k miles on the clock of a well maintained pusher.
The older coaches do seem to be better quality
Curious how common this really is? Was this overkill on the part of the prospective buyer to ask for this valve inspection? I can't imagine how expensive the "ask" is of the engine dealer (and your portion) to do this....
This had an engine issue in its history and was vital for the new owner to figure out before the purchase.
My guess is 3k all inclusive.
