- The man who raped and strangled a Bothell teenager in 1993 will likely spend the rest of his life behind bars.
Alan Edward Dean had an outburst in court Wednesday maintaining his innocence right before a Snohomish County judge sentenced him to nearly 27 years in prison, with credit for time served. The sentencing came more than three decades after the brutal killing of 15-year-old Melissa Lee.
It was in 1993 that Melissa was raped and strangled and her body was thrown from an Everett bridge. Dean was arrested for Lee’s murder in 2020 when DNA found at the scene tied him to the crime. There were four years of legal delays due to mental health concerns before a jury found him guilty in late March.
At the sentencing Wednesday, Lee’s mother and sister gave emotional testimony about how Dean's actions flipped their lives upside down, as they urged the judge to give Dean the maximum possible sentence. The prosecutor explained the maximum sentence for first-degree murder in Washington state would be 320 months because Dean had no prior offenses.

How is 26 years the maximum for rape ,first degree murder, ?????DAMNNNNN
He's not coming out alive anyway.
Bubba and the boys don't care about wheelchairs. And he's on his way out as it is.
It could be that was what the sentence was back in 1993. I know some states sentence the perpetrator to what the sentence would have been in 1993 and it can be that all the other crimes except the murder had passed their statute of limitations, so he could only be charged with the murder.
@@deem3204 but still 3 heinous crimes where any of the 3 should have been life
not that at his age 26 years wont be the rest of his life, but he gets out in half, he has his freedom all this time and could still have life, what he denied that young lady
@@VeteranGamerDad4ChristI think it's because such a big amount of time has passed its hard to prove 1st degree so the courts settle for the easier 2nd degree. It's quite common when large amounts of time have passed.
The other day I read they handed out a hundred and twenty years sentence for someone who shot at police. No one was injured
I’m trying to wrap my brain around 26 years BUT credit for time served, meaning basically 22 years. He lived freely for 3 decades. What credit does Melissa Lee get?
That’s what I was thinking too. She doesn’t have a choice of any time served!
Makes me Sick and pissed at the legal system all over the States! Criminals have All the rights nowadays. Victims are left with what the criminals leave behind…
He be dead in 5 years max!
In those 3 decades he probably had many victims.
Unfortunately because it's a legal system, not a justice system
@@elandthirkhaoth4718 Man you nailed that!
Thirty years later? I wonder how many times he did that to other girls.
At least once--he drugged and raped a 13 year old in Arizona before he killed Melissa Lee.
Good question🤔
How is 25 years justice? For a young life never lived? 😡
If he did it today he would get nine months
😢
This guy is 65. There's no way he's going to make it to 90. Even if he lived in a state with the death penalty, he'd be dead before they finished with appeals.
Four year delay for mental health concerns? No. If he wasn’t mentally ill when he committed these atrocious acts, no point in giving him that pass now. So sick of our justice system.
He should be in prison for the rest of his life he killed a girl.
You think he’s living more than 25 years? I’d give him 5
He will die in prison. RIP Melissa. 🙏🏻💖
he is clearly elderly and in a wheelchair
Won't be long
@@franciscallahan2529so what? He raped & killed a young woman!
26.6 years is the maximum sentence for a crime like that?
Seriously?
It’s based on the charges that were brought. The *prosecutors* clearly didn’t think they could get a conviction on the most serious murder charges, so they charged him with a lesser charge.
Not the judiciary’s fault, it’s the prosecutors and the legislature’s faults
@@officaldungeons Not really. Judges are a literal JOKE.
26 years??? That is not justice. How does this judge figure that??
Liberal
Damn drug dealers get more time. wtf is wrong with this crappy judge. Murder= life. Period.
The judge gave the maximum sentence. It means she couldn’t’ve given any time more based on the range of months established in the laws he was found guilty of breaking.
@@officaldungeons so what you’re saying is rape and murder has a maximum sentence of 26 years while armed robbery warrants a longer period of incarceration?
Just makes a person want to run out rape and murder THEN rob them after the fact.
We’re about as backwards as we can get. Still sentence 20 yrs for weed paraphernalia but a slap on the wrist-if that, for actually having weed.
Please make it make sense.
@@susans8093it depends on the state. Different states have different laws about the length of the sentence. I agree with you though it does seem like it's completely backwards
who's doing 20 years for weed paraphernalia lol @@susans8093
That is not enough time
Why 26 year cap for murder? What, is this England?
That was the max at the time. You can only sentence a person to whatever the law allowed at the time that they committed the crime.
I don't trust the justice system anymore
THIS is what did it?
I don't either!
When was it ever worthy of trust and respect???
Y'all should get involved! Instead of just not trusting.
Never trust the justice system to begin with! I mean one guy got released in nyc during the pandemic after stalking and stabbing a woman in beauty salon in front of horrified witnesses! The justice system is a fucking joke! This guy got away with it for 30 years and they have the nerve to say he should get credit for time served, it’s about the assailant, never the victims rights. It’s always been that way
26yrs in prison for rape and murder is a slap in the face for the victim and her family. I'm so disgusted with these light sentences for heinous crimes. We need to bring the death sentence back to Washington.
Thats our justice system more lenient on the criminal than the victem
He won’t live long enough to get out anyway.
IOW you’re fine with executing innocent people because THATS INEVITABLE with death penalty states. I would argue only by degree are you different than you know who. 😏
Longer sentences are reserved for "AMERICANS " that oppose Biden's liberal Quassy communist rule and storm "OUR" Nations Capitol to show support for our "LIBERTY" in this beautiful country "THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA"
It’s basically a life sentence for him
How little life is worth these days.
Only if you’re a criminal
@@at1970 well, there are criminals and then there are criminals. I find it disgusting that someone can take a life and end up on parole
@@davidalvidrez9452 Welcome to the world where our police and judges are jokes. Laughing stocks.
💯...look at human history back 1 million yrs...1964 Bronx zoo display,4' by 6' mirror,caption says: world's most violent animal "....1968 Brookfield zoo in Chicago same display, I'm 75 yrs,just 🗣️ I agree and I 🤔🤕
Death penalty
I remember this case. My first year of college.
Glad they got him. Horrible.
Only 26 years?
No real Justice he should have gotten life for the life he took
26 YEARS IS A JOKE OF A SENTENCE....LIFE
The judge was to soft ,rap and death should be a death sentence
What part of "judge gave him the maximum sentence" don't you understand? It's not up to her how much he can get with those charges.
He will more than likely die in Jail. Sad to say but the expense of the Death Penalty, given his age, was not worth it.
@@Anna-cx4tg Not an American but just wondering.. Would the sentence be a reflection of what he would get today if he committed the crime or was that the maximum back in 1993?
he should've gotten 320 years
awesome that dna evidence was still there and that someone thought to go bsck and look again.
That state needs to change their sentencing guidelines.
Ppl have to look at it this way, he won’t live long enough to ever see a day outside prison
Man what they better give him 50 years
The fact he got 30 years with no consequences he should have to spend the rest of his life there but it looks like he might anyway
HE NEEDS LYFE N PRISON…WTF
Frankly I'm surprised the feds never replaced that wheelchair with an electric chair.
Victory ✌️ for the victim😢
🌹 Melissa Lee 🌹
He won’t live for 25 more years.
I’d want to make sure so 125 years would be satisfactory
So sorry for the family, hope they well have some peace now.
I just saw a cop given no jail time for running over a teen and laughing about it... so if I become a cop, can I commit any crimes and not be held accountable?
Yea, just don't get caught with a little marijuana. I know lots that have n got the book throwed at them. But rape n murder a child an only get a slap on the wrist.
Basically yes.
Cops think so.
Go on a ride a long. Cops run people over all nite long and then go to eat dinner. They need snow plows to clear the streets in morn. Yup. Sure. Seen it happen. 😮
Did you see that cop, refused to pay his 5,000$ fine, now delinquent and still laughing I'm sure...0 consequences here... SMH
Good-let him stay there.
This is the second judge I've heard of with the last name "Judge." 😮
100 years without the possibility of parole should be the minimum sentence. Death penalty was warranted.
I gave this a thumbs down because 26 years for murder is unacceptable. Life without parole ever should be the minimum. Period end of discussion.
He does this horrible crap and he gets 25 years but if a woman had done this they'd be getting life in prison if not the death sentence this is a bias enforcement on the law they need to be harsher on punishments for people like this
Wtf is wrong with these judges life without parole would be best he lived his life no justice here BS.
It's not the judges. It is following the letter of the law of that jurisdiction.
@@tanikokishimoto1604 Fuck the law. Fuck juristdiction too.
I’d like to know what the heck is wrong with ours justice system?! 26 years with less for time served is a complete joke!!! That’s not justice!!!!! 😡🤬
26 years ??? That judge should be sitting in the same cell block.
Mental illness should not be a factor, you lost those right when you committed that crime
Wheelchair for sympathy?
What a scumbag! Condolences to the family.
Wow ! He was free to live life for 3 decades . Now he can spend the rest of his life in prison .
"Mental health concerns" well NO 💩. Youth-in-ize.
No justice extra-crispy for him?
He is OVERDUE 😮😢
Poor girl
I have an idea. Anyone who is finally caught after a felony crime, will have the years they've been free added on to their judicial sentence. Thoughts?
I think it is.
Hope he never makes it out
so sad! i’m glad he’s going to pay for his crime even though he got to walk free for so many years…i’m thankful technology is catching these evil predators.. may your family begin to heal❤
I'm sorry but I don't understand why there's no death penalty???
26 years? May they be brutal
Glad they finally got this guy. I remember this crime. The victim and I were the same age. I remember thinking about what happened to her was so horrific. I pray for her family and friends 🙏
Sicko I’m so sorry for your endurance of this horrible situation:(
Jail house justice, karma, it's coming.
I hope there is really a “Dexter” or vigilante out there because of injustice, unfair and dysfunctional justice system. Someone was brutally murdered and suspect got away for 3 decades then sentenced ONLY to 26 years?!! wtf
How did they know each other? He should have gotten life
Sad.
to be raped murdered and then thrown off a bridge and ur killer only gets 26 years is appalling. the max sentence should be whatever the victims family sees fit
NOT ENOUGH JUSTICE 😖 SOooo sorry for your loss 💔
Praying for the family
Wow👏🏼 a Judge who delivers a proper sentence to fit the horrific crime to a 👹monster RIP Young Lady🕊️
26 years vs the cost of one bullet
Why there is no statute of limitations on murder!
I bet he would shit his pants whenever he watched CSI.
He got away with it for decades.
Only 26 years? That is what is wrong with this country. We need vigilante justice sometimes - always when it involves harming a child or anyone that can’t protect themselves. Groups forming near you. Send a message …. We must fight hard to leave this country in a better and safer way for our children and grandchildren. It is becoming increasingly dangerous at an alarming rate. Stand up. Speak up. Fight back.
We NEED to have mandatory capital punishment for murder
After 31 years 😢
He won’t make it a year
How many more times did he do it if he got away with it once? Guaranteed this is just the one time they caught him. Once a criminal always a criminal. Have you met a thief that would only steal 20 of your 100$? Lol no. He did this over and over again as many times as he could, they only caught him once.
Hope someone carries out the real sentence behind bars
I’m glad he’s finally got justice and Melissa’s family has closure.
Look at his expression. He's thinking
' this is bullshit '
Why not just give him life in prison 💯
Too little too late . No justice served
At least DNA can solve crime and doesn't convict the wrong people.
My prayers go out to her family🙏❤️
You must be kidding? 26 years? For rape and murder? There is something wrong with a justice system that allows this sentence. He had nearly three decades of freedom. So wrong.
He should at least get more time in prison than he spent free after he did this terrible act.
Savage. Lock up and throw away the key.
It ain’t got no gas in it.
This is absurd
For the Mother, all she has to do is think of her daughter and it immediately brings her back to that time, no matter how much has passed.
And WHY only 26 yrs?!!!!
Not life, capital punishment!
He thought he got away with it. We all know there were more. What a demon
Credit for time served? Start the clock when he goes to the slammer. WTF is this “credit for time served” BS?
All of these criminals enter the courtroom in wheelchairs. How obvious.
Only 26 years....are we all missing something?
Took 34 years before they would try him and got less years than a thief
The contempt on his face. 🤮
It should be more time in prison for him
Poor baby 😢 RIP
It's time to throw mental health out the window. No excuses!
That judge has a great name
Let's hope his time in prison will be a miserable hell for this monster. Most convicts have morals and they will eventually find out what this coward did.
Why did he only get 26 years and Pelocie's attacker got 30?
Melissa was the same age as me 😢
Hugs to all those who got to see Justice served
Capital punishment or there was absolutely no justice in this case....PERIOD!!!!
